Player Discussion Matthew Poitras II

Benching the kid isn’t the problem, never was, benching him every 3rd period in close games regardless of how he playing is the problem.

At somepoint after the 5th time he’s done it it’s not really much of a learning experience anymore and maybe it’s time to let him play his way through it.

And in game load management is not a thing lol, at least it shouldn’t be, you either dress him or you don’t. It just puts more load on the rest of the roster.

I don't think so.

He's a teenager playing in the NHL. Coach's job is to win games, not to enhance Poitras' learning experience.

We have blown several late 3rd period leads with Poitras stapled to the bench, everyone makes mistakes, even our most reliable players. Time to stop burning out those forwards that Montgomery is over relying on, he will have to use all 4 lines come playoff time.

I do hope we don't go Toronto on this kid.

Anyone who didn't think there would be bumps in the road was kidding themselves. Extremely young kid playing the most challenging position on the ice -- let alone for a team that demands (requires, desperately needs, will implode without) strong defensive coverage from their Centers.

Let the kid breathe and grow. That's a plea to management, fans, media, the whole bunch.

If he doesn't win the Calder he's not a failure. And Bruins aren't in a position where they can be overly picky about Centers.

while what you are saying is true, Poitras being on the ice, based solely on his play away from the puck at times, wouldn`t be an upgrade on those typically sent out by Monty to protect leads.

I think too many here looking at Poitras with rose colored glasses. While I think he`s having a very good start to what I suspect will be a long NHL career, his game is not without warts and right now, those warts are defensively and his need to continue to develop his game as a C in a tough system with a ton of responsibilities for players in that role

Poitras get`s "it", sounds like Monty and he had a great chat, I get the sense Poitras will not look at this as a confidence buster but a challenge

Of course, but even as an NHL coach there is a level development you still need to provide to help your players reach their potentials, no matter the age. Which is part of benching him when he makes mistakes, that’s enhancing his learning experience trying to teach him he can’t make those mistakes.

But when you just bury the kid in the third 5 times in a row in the third period cus you don’t trust him that’s a little dysfunctional, you need to try to let him build trust in those scenarios by playing him in them(which I think Monty will do soon), or don’t dress him.

bingo!

Any chance they release him for World Juniors? Not if Zacha is out but Poitras seems like a player at this stage of development that a few weeks playing with his peers and being a go-to guy might really benefit him and The Bruins.

Canada has a tough bracket, I can see why you'd want him
But that's a No,request denied
I have a long-standing belief that teams should seriously consider it if the player would like to go. Both for development and the relationship. Country is secondary. If he was American, Swedish, etc. I’ve held the same position. I can 100% understand why you’re not shipping Bedard, Matthews, McDavid, etc. But some of these kids you’re not quite relying on that are just starting to get their game, I think it would be a positive for both the player and team going forward.

Monty trying to force Poitras to Sweden
He honestly looks like a 19 yo playing in the NHL right now. I would rather him watch from upstairs a few times a month than waste the growth he has had by sending to play with kids his age in a tournament

He will never be the same player again!

I'm going to disagree. Being the only NLHers amongst your teenage peers gives you a gravitas that you're not getting from the press box. Two weeks of not learning the NHL game vs. playing for your country and having to take on a leadership role.

I'd want the player in the latter.

Thinking that a short period of time back in juniors when he’s 19 is going to somehow ruin or stunt his development is silly.

This kid is going to develop for quite a few years into what will eventually be (inshallah) a consistent nhl caliber top 6 center.

A tournament when he’s 19 isn’t damaging anything and may be the confidence booster he needs right now.

Today’s Globe:

Matt Poitras was a healthy scratch for the second time against the Islanders as part of the load management schedule the club has set up for the 19-year-old center.

Poitras, who has 5 goals and 12 points in 26 games, is eligible to play in the World Junior Championships that begin in Sweden Dec. 26.

“Having talked with [general manager] Donny [Sweeney], I think Hockey Canada has reached out, but we’re not making a decision on that right now,” said Montgomery.

Not many 18-19 year olds can jump right into the NHL and make an instant impact. It would be a feather in Poitras hat to play against the best junior players in the world in this tourney. Sweeny should be looking at this as a positive. Bruins can bring him back into the fold after if they so choose. Fairly certain Bruin fans would love to see this kid play on the world stage rather than sitting up in the rafters with pigeons twiddling his thumbs. To play in the World Junior Tourney for your country is a once in a life time opportunity. There were a lot of NHL drafted kids that got cut on these squads and yet they want Poitras on the team. Must mean something that they left a spot open just for him.
