Player Discussion Matthew Poitras II

Geekie has looked very good at C in the last few games ...not sure what that means for Poitras when Zacha comes back .... Geekie might be better used slotting in to Pitras spot which creates a bit of log jam at C (didn't think I'd ever say that this year)

Not many 18-19 year olds can jump right into the NHL and make an instant impact. It would be a feather in Poitras hat to play against the best junior players in the world in this tourney. Sweeny should be looking at this as a positive. Bruins can bring him back into the fold after if they so choose. Fairly certain Bruin fans would love to see this kid play on the world stage rather than sitting up in the rafters with pigeons twiddling his thumbs. To play in the World Junior Tourney for your country is a once in a life time opportunity. There were a lot of NHL drafted kids that got cut on these squads and yet they want Poitras on the team. Must mean something that they left a spot open just for him.
I agree. Near the exact set of circumstance a team would be willing to release a player -caveat of if he wants to.
It’s a learning year for him. I don’t disagree with scheduled scratches. He’s 19 and compared to most teenagers that make the league he wouldn’t have had an army around him preparing him for the jump.
Not sure if it was left open for Poitras as there’s a couple other kids in the same sorta position but figure he’s probably their hope. Especially with Sweeney’s response.

On a purely public relations side. WJC is good marketing for both the player and team. He will get talked about a lot as will the Bruins for letting him play.

Small sample size with Geekie at center but he looks like a better option than Poitras at this point.

Not sure how I feel about him going to play for Canada. As a Canadian I wish him a great tournament but with the Bruins center depth I'm not sure we can afford to lose him. I suppose if Zacha is good to go and with the way Geeks has been playing I can see why they let him go. It's not everyday that you get to represent your country so I hope he makes the best of his time there and comes back stronger.

They are doing what is best for him right now. They did it with Pasta and it worked out well. The Bruins will be fine for 6 games

It's actually best for the team too, long term. Just a matter of seeing this play out over time.

These moments in careers are huge. The chance that Matty levels up massively over 7 NHL games are small. The chance he gets the gold and comes back a totally different player are legit. This is a good play for Boston too.

I always think that you never want to give up a chance to play for your country. Good on the Bruins for allowing Poitras the opportunity. Will be tougher to win without him, but ultimately this is the right call.
Builds goodwill with the player if this is something they really want to do too

I’m sure Pasta appreciated it and we got him on that sweetheart of a first extension

Agree 100%.

So many of our guys have played at the WJC and have all said the tournament changes you.

The majority of the team have played in the WJC. McAvoy and Marchand have won gold.

I have no doubt the leadership core also made one hell of a case for him.

He is playing well in NHL - he set up Freddy goal against Rags Saturday

Very surprising they let him go - I wouldn’t

I been battling severe case of selfishness for years so for myself I’m excited because I love this tourney and Poitras shifts are like watching my kids play - I really really really want him to be a star here

Can’t wait for these games now

Interestingly I was reading Athletic a half hour ago about the Canada roster and Eric texts me this

I guess Monty going big centers next 3 weeks

Should have posted to this thread instead of salary cap thread

Hmm- let's see

a 19 year old gets to play for his country in what is the top Junior tournament in the world

and in so doing misses 6-7 games for a team whose record is one of the best in the NHL

a true development experience not to mention a highlight personal experience that those who have experienced it say was phenomenal and life changing

and some people are complaining - must be the low barometric pressure causing people to be grumpy

enjoy the ride Marty and bring back a medal!!

Man their center depth is going to be really bad, but I do agree with letting him go. Once in a lifetime experience.

Very different situation that sending Lysell over from Providence last year (which was a disaster). If he just plays his game the points will come a plenty on that roster without feeling the need to Allen Iverson it like Lysell did.

I'd be willing to sponsor you for citizenship. I feel like for you to really enjoy this, you need to be one of us. Come up here, have some of our food and beer, and just really experience what it's like to be one of the chosen hockey people.

Maybe he'll be like Bergeron and end up tourney MVP.

Stranger things have happened :D
