Matts is now riding the pine with the Habs after showing them nothing. At what point is he just a bust and we made a decent deal to get something of value for him?

To me that's the most damning indictment of all.

He never did enough in Albany to earn a higher-line role
He never did enough here to beat out garbage players under two different administrations
He sure as shooting isn't doing enough now to cause Montreal to have patience with him

At some point the player's just not that good.

Brian O'Neill has a higher PPG this year in the NHL than Busted Toe.

LOL that's ****ing funny.

It's obvious to pretty much everyone that this is the case. We turned a bust into a usable NHL player. We should all be thrilled.

Matteau sucks.

If we gave him a chance, Montreal would've known he sucks and then we wouldn't have Devante Rod-Pelley

Well we could have probably still gotten Monteal's version of Rod Pelley for Matteau, if that had happened.

I suspect DSP will be a scapegoat 30 or 40 games into next season when he's on a 20+ game goal drought and people mistakenly developed expectations that we had a solid third line winger.

People tend to oversell things like tenacity and puck battle ability when a player has goals going in.

I don't really have any problem with the trade since Matteau had very little value. Just not getting my hopes up on a fluky run by DSP.

Produced in Jr's. Produced in the AHL. Has produced in the NHL playoffs.

This is so not a Bobby Farnham situation.

As far as luck, he's had his share no doubt, but he also had a good chance stopped the other night, and a sweet pass to Rico that was not buried.

He's played well. The trade looked good on the day of the trade, looks very good as of today.

The only fluky thing is the 7 goals in 9 games.

And on however many shots, probably not many.

I don't think him producing is a fluke, but of course him producing like he has is fluky or unsustainable at the very least.

It would be unsustainable for almost any player to produce like that, unless it's like Ovechkin or something.

Possibly. But he never got the opportunity a lot of those players got. Hell, O'Neil was in the top 6 for a period of time...they stuck with him for a ridiculous amount of time while he did absolutely nothing
You sure are going out of your way to defend a guy you supposedly do not like.

I actually liked Matteau. Thought his AHL seasons were OK, was completely sure he was handled poorly by the Devils, and definitely would have liked to see him get more time this season. But on the day of the trade, Matteau for DSP was an easy one for NJ.

Couple weeks later and we need to suppress our laughter. Devils fans trying to poo poo this trade are out of their gord's.

Matteau played over 12 minutes and contributed 6 hits(not points, not assists, not even SOG's) in the Habs 4-3 win over Anaheim.

At least he played. I wonder if he'll ride the pine again in the next game?

From the Canadians board:

"DSP played only 11 games this year on the top 9 and his production was 7 points in 11 games, which begs the question why he wasn't try there more often and why he didn't get more ice-time."

Pretty great production in his time off the 4th line if you ask me. That's why context is important. Regurgitating statistics means very little without context.

I'll give Matts a chance with them under their new coach because it has become pretty clear Therrion is awful. If he can't find a role under their new regime then he is a complete bust.

I was about to say

When a useless goon like Mike Brown is outscoring you, then you really suck terribly.

And this is exactly why he wasn't in favor here with this coaching staff. Because besides Ruutu, he had the lowest PPG out of any regular forward on the team. I think other than Ruutu, he may have even had the lowest PPG out of any defenseman on the team too. Not counting MAG and his 4 games.

Even offensively allergic Seth Helgeson has 1 point in 17 games this season.

Though Merrill did take pretty frickin long to get his first point of the season too, if I recall correctly. I believe he had 0 points in almost 25 games at one point.

He's currently at 2.2 shots per game with the Devils. 3 shots per game over his last 5. So pretty good.

And all of his points with NJ thus far have been ES. No PP padding going on here. In his career he only has 3 pp points, and 3 shorty points.

If you look past the first round of the 2012 draft i would say we has a good chance to carve out some quality NHL players. If you then add on DSP as our first round pick it looks even better.

That was one weak draft but looks like philly also had a great one compared to how weak it looks now.

-1 round - DSP
-2 round - D. Severson
-3 round - B. Johnson (bust) probably
-4 round - B. Thomson ( looks decent as a 4 line)
-5 round - G. Black
-6 round - A. Kerfoot ( PPG college player right? )
-6 round - J. Blandisi.
-7 round - A. Gavrus (Bust)

Stefan bleeping Matteau is the hill that Jim is willing to die on. Unbelievable

When Jim admits he was wrong...

so basically never. :sarcasm:

You guys have completely misunderstood me here. My comments really have nothing to do with Matteau. Not even a little. To me Matteau was an asset that was mishandled by both regimes, and thrown away. Getting less value than they should have had they took the time to develop him and give him the opportunity.

This issue for me is trading a forward prospect for a limited player. Yeah it is nice and all that Pelly has 10 points in 9 games but any reasonable person looking at his career would fully understand that there hasn't been much of anything there. This is a guy that had opportunity with Getzlaf and Perry on multiple occasions so don't tell me his numbers are because of usage...

So this is a player that had 21 goals in 195 before he got here - Pelly literally just scored a quarter of his career goals here in New Jersey in 9 games... 25% here. and is a RFA with arbitration rights at the end of this seasom.

Sorry dudes, Matteau can be bubble gum stuck to the bottom of your shoe...But trading a two year younger player, signed for another year that hasn't been given an opportunity for a 4th liner is terrible, terrible, terrible asset management. Just is.
