Matthews needs to be held to a higher standard because they gave him the captaincy. Mitch is meh at times but the level of expectations shouldn't be equal.

Not happy with Woll either. There's some major coddling going on with that guy. Guy's basically injured for 6 months on and off and yet they manage to play him vs his hometown twice in a week and get burned for it both nights. Thanks.

Stephen, regardless why can they not just mix it up? Matthews was rocket fuel with Nylander last season. Try that again, why not? The team just has no accountability and like you said in the the other thread, coddles them.

Just demote Matthews and let Marner play with Knies. If you want to slice it that way it works for me as well. The point is Matthews is sucking with Marner now and the PP is trash.

Matthews and Marner should be split up for sure. Matthews has no set identity or consistency as far as work ethic goes and takes on too much of Marner's mannerisms the more they are together. Probably why Babcock stapled Hyman to Matthews at the start of his career. Keep him going.

Matthews should be put with higher work rate and more physical players to unleash a more dominant version of himself, there is so much evidence that he plays to an underachieving comfort level when he's with Marner. But I wonder if the two of them are actively lobbying to be together.

I feel like a lot of the flak Marner gets should go to Matthews, especially after an effort like the Blues game where ironically Marner is the one who scores the goal by going to the net and grabbing a rebound whereas the captain is turning into Mitch's sidekick more and more every day... no one would accuse Marner of having a hot start, but he's the one sitting with above PPG and slightly off his typical pace, whereas the highest paid player is floating through the season producing like a 2nd line center.

Exactly, Matthews was looking like the 3rd wheel of this line since the beggining of season between marner and knies but its Marner who get all the blame

Looking like everything going wrong with Toronto is Marner fault, that's becoming just pathetic

Exactly. It's almost self evident at this point. They just need to do it.

Matthews plays like it's the Marner, Knies show and he's just along for the ride. Compared to the way rookie Matthews worked, captain Matthews is just a shadow of his former self.

When in his entire career has Mitch Marner played with a bit of piss and vinegar?

I’m saying I’d rather him develop that compared to fighting for no reason. He does need to fight, he needs to play with some more zest or piss and vinegar.

I think we'll just have to go ahead and re-sign Marner and Tavares to keep the band together and just forget about winning anything.

Winning looks fun and everything, but it's more important we make sure no other team get their hands on our core 4.
If I could like this post a thousand times, I would.

He does. He seems to just want to be in a no check league. Everyone would love to play that way. Imagine if the entire team played his style of stand in open areas and wait for loose pucks to pop out?

Hes been going to the dirty areas a little more this season, its very evident that Berube had told him to do so. Who knows what couldve been if he eas going to the dirty areas for the past 5 years?

Im not holding my breath though..people rarely if ever suddenly become gritty. If its not in their DNA...its unlikely to change.

I very much agree with this. I love Matthews, Marner and Nylander and I believe Matthews has been the worst of them so far this season, Nylander has played the best but he's taken a few nights off whereas Marner has been the most consistent night in and night out imo. Why they haven't tried different combinations is beyond me. It's actually so consistent that it's become weird to not try something else by now.

There is common ground here between us. I watch point play or stankoven for example and think Marner is more than capable doing that. It’s more about doing it on a consistent basis. Like I said I was at the game on Thursday and while Marner does do a lot of great things, it’s tough watching the curl backs ect. He just needs to attack the net.

Can he do it? Idk, it’s sometimes hard to change your ways after 9/10 years of doing things a specific way. That’s why I’m pro, waiting until after playoffs to resign. As much as I love Marner as a leaf, if they don’t get it done again, (I mean lose first round, or win first round and get dummied in second round) it’ll be hard to justify running it back

I'm in the same boat, although I would see it very tempting to run it back with Matthews, Marner, and Nylander with JT's salary available to go to better depth and better defense.

He’s trying to change the narrative. Playing great hockey this year with a little more pushback. If tgey make the playoffs, hopefully he’s engaged and not pushed out a series.

Not very tempting at all for me. JT's salary goes to pay a different #2C and raises for our own guys and that's that.

He’s finally going to some of the dirty areas. He’s been flattened in a few games, but that is the ptice that comes with playing hockey, nobody is exempt from it. Today he was battling in the corner, and after the whistle, his frustration boiled over, and he actually initiated the first shove to the opponent. Wasn’t that great to see?!

I’m still not liking his offense, but his defense has been excellent. He’s much more tolerable when he’s physically engaged and going to battle with his team.

This is exactly what Berube means when he talked about competing hard versus just working hard. Marner has added a bit of that compete this year, something we haven’t seen in the past.

Not to sure how much he can endure though.
