That’s interesting given how key he was for two of our goals. One no-look pass on the money to set up AM34, and another key battle won to keep possession and get it to Matthews who made a sweet play to get to to JT. Those two goals don’t happen if not for Marner. I guess you must have missed those.

I personally see the same old Marner. Talented AF, makes some good plays. Then dumb giveaways and too fancy stuff. Fly byes, doesn’t hit anything.

Marner will be resigned by the Leafs this year. First player in the coached dog house will be Nylander.

The big question is - how will he play in the playoffs? Will he live up to his pay grade, or will he continue the downward trend we witnessed in the last two playoff series he played?

What anyone says should have no impact on a player who's supposedly a superstar. As far as what's affecting him goes, who the hell knows?

Marchand told him he was coming after him in the last game they played prior to the playoffs. I heard Swayman and Tkachuk in the Amazon Faceoff talking about taking guys out of series buy getting in their face and hounding them. It’s was clear the Bruins felt they could throw Marner off and they were very effective at making him disinterested in competing as the series went along.

Well hell, that's interesting in a very depressing way. Not that it takes much to make Marner "disinterested in competing as the series went along", unless the kid grows a pair or somehow gets one transplanted I wouldn't seriously consider another big bucks contract for him.

The only way it would make sense to extend Marner for a huge cap hit is if you're fine with continued playoff failures. Unfortunately, I think the ownership might be fine with that. Oh well, regular season should still be fun as long as you somehow forget about what happens in the playoffs. Not that that's easy to do for people like myself, but there seems to be enough people drinking the koolaid, that playoff failures might not matter as the Leaf Nation printing press seems to just keep on printing money no matter what.

There was one play where he tried to go hard into a player on the boards. And a couple shots he'd usually not take.

What I see is a coach who will push even softies like marner to get uncomfortable and use the body from time to time, and one who will not allow his players to play an indirect, puck juggling game.

Marner has to adjust. Let's see if he can. It'll take some time as it will with numerous other players.

He definitely forces things too much at times, and needs to clean up his game a bit to be more effective. However you make it sound like he is a net negative out there. If he was, he wouldn’t be playing.

I wouldn’t sign him now and wait until after the playoffs. Based on the little we know about him and his family, and the negative vibe around him, he’d probably bolt if had a good playoff. Still, that’s a chance I’d take, but I expect they’ll sign him.

I doubt he'd want to leave Toronto no matter what, especially if he has a good playoffs which would remove all the pressure he's feeling now.

I wasn’t suggesting his contribution was the most important part of those goals, but he played an important role and those goals don’t happen if he doesn’t play his part. If it is so replaceable, why is the coach putting him there? Not just Berube, but prior coaches too? If 80% of players are capable of those plays, then why is he getting PP1 time? Do you really think if you asked the captain if he felt the same, that he would agree with you? Let’s get real here.

Which results? playoff results? Team results are shared by the team. It’s still 20+ players on that roster. But that would be interesting to look at. What is the historical record of the leafs with each of the core 4 out? Based on what I am reading, Marner is easily replaceable and does more harm than good. Addition by subtraction lol…. Our record must be amazing with him out of the lineup. Especially when you consider that he has been our sole issue all along.

every hockey can make good play, good shot or good pass... The difference between depht player and elite player is the rate at wich they are able to make those play.
