Nylander will begin playing for that $11.5mm next week.

That’s interesting given how key he was for two of our goals. One no-look pass on the money to set up AM34, and another key battle won to keep possession and get it to Matthews who made a sweet play to get to to JT. Those two goals don’t happen if not for Marner. I guess you must have missed those.

Yes, one lucky pass to Matthews and one excellent play by Matthews got him two assists.

In not much more than half the ice time Nylander had three goals, and you might admit that without him, none of those goals would have happened.

Like I always said, if our boys play for any other teams, we would all be laughing at them for choking and the MGT for still believing and running it back without any changes.

But bc they play of the Leafs, we end up supporting them and hoping this is the year as they learned their lessons from past playoffs, as they are right there, they are close and just need a few bounces to WIN……..a round.

The same is true the other way. Outside of Nylander and possibly Domi which players on our team are teeing it up perfectly like that for Matthews on his first goal. I’d say probably no one. What makes guys like oats, backstrom and Marner great players is that they consistently know how to get the puck to their goal scorers. And that’s why the star goal scorers loved them and wanted to play a long side them. It’s not as sexy as goal scoring but being able to set guys up perfectly is an art in itself.

McMann for example is not making the other of those plays Marner did.

Marner's a fine player, especially during the regular season but let's be real here, if he didn't have the best goal scorer in the world to pass to, his point totals would be substantially less than they are and the same applies to Oates and Backstrom.

He did much more than that....Matthews produced 2x more per 60 with 3 million Domi than he did with 11 million Marner.

26, 27 year old Matthews 5v5 with Marner last two seasons:
2023: 539 mins, 1.33 g/60
2024: 720 mins, 1.55 g/60

27 year old Matthews with Domi:
2024: 206 mins, 3.19 g/60

22 year old Matthews 5v5 with 40 year old Marleau
2018-2019: 432mins, 1.8 g/60

22 year old Matthews 5v5 with Kasperi Kapanen
2018-2019: 591 mins, 1.52 g/60

22 year old Matthews g/60 5v5 was better with Kapanen and 40 year old Marleau than it has been with Marner the past 2 seasons.

Its actually possible an argument could be made that Matthews is actually a better goal scorer without Marner.

Fact is that both of them being the Dynamic Duo choked in playoffs and only managed to lead the Leafs to ONE playoff series win in 6yrs(going to put the first 2 yrs as learning lessons).

Are you really happy that playing in the first round is good enough.

The number ONE objective for Leafsnation should be winning the Cup, whether they do it with our current core or a whole bunch of David Kampf and Engvall should not matters as long as they win the Cup.

I just don’t understand why MGT and Fans continue to support the notion that let’s bring the core back as they will eventually do it. What excuses or reasons can you possibly have that give you hope that our beta chokers will finally do it?
Even themselves know they don’t have excuses any more. Keefe is a problem, now we have Coach B, our defense been a problem, we now have a pretty solid top 4, depth scoring, we have a few more guys that can score 20 goals, the fact is that no team can win in the playoffs by scoring 2 or less goals throughout a series. No teams can win if their top 3 AAV forwards combine for like 10% or 20% or 30% of all goals scored. Our top guys need to dominate a playoffs series and not be a passenger looking for others to lead.
