So how can this ever go away? Due to the Nylander/Matthews dramatic overpayments, the leafs now have to overpay everybody for all of eternity?
Would Dubas being fired even change it?
Once you set your teams internal salary scale, then that choice becomes you'd better be prepared to live by that moving forward when new players that merit being considered among the best on the team want to get paid accordingly.
A GM doesn't need to overpay, but if he set the precedence himself, he has to live with the consequences of his own actions.
So now you either overpay Marner to keep him which results in above NHL comparables, or you might be forced to move on from Marner recognizing the slippery slope your on and continuing down this road will negatively impact the team you're managing. The 3rd option is the one Dubas is currently attempting showing cost constraint, and hoping Marner caves to his will, but while that is happening the player remains unsigned and of no value to your own team either.
This is not just a Leafs issue as every team facing the same issues and concerns when they set their own salary structures based on affordability and budget per market, when managing their salary cap.
Any GM that steps up and overpays Marner via OS, has to understand that he is also impacting his own teams salary structure moving forward, when his own future player contracts are due and they use teammate Marner as their comparable.
