Since we never hear about Hirvonen, I'm guessing he hasn't been great.
I think he's been pretty good this year, he's just buried down their depth chart because he's playing C and being so young he hasn't had a ton of opportunities. Niemela has been pretty solid so far this year. Having watched a few of his games, you can see that he's pretty heavily sheltered when it comes to ice time. The team does realize his offensive abilities and are using him primarily in offensive situations and PPs. When it comes to PK or last minutes of close games, Niemela usually doesn't see much ice time. He hasn't been bad defensively or anything, I think it's another case of a young guy who gets his ice time cut in favor of vets who are more trusted by the coaching staff for crucial situations. I hope at some point they start giving him harder minutes. Hirvonen also I think should probably move to the W. He has extremely good vision and passing abilities and excellent defensive game and that's helped him stick at 3C but if he was on the W, I think he could be utilized more in an offensive role and would probably work his way up the lineup.

Pontus Holmberg has also looked very good and is looking like he can be a very respectable middle 6 C in the future. Perhaps he is the answer for the 3C hole. He still needs to work on his skating but his offensive skills and hockey IQ are pleasantly surprising.

Hirvonen plays on a much better team this year which means less ice time.

Expect Hirvonen to have a massive WJHC considering how well he played last year. There will be more buzz around him at that time. WJHC is where most posters learn about a lot of prospects. Most people around here don't follow them too closely other than that tournament (but that doesn't stop them from having strong opinions on those players).

Here's my personal list:

As usual, U24, must have played less than 50 NHL GP, and have NHL rights owned by the Leafs.

[TBODY] [/TBODY]

Tier 1: Impact NHL potential, could be a star, will be a NHL player.
Tier 2: Chance at top-6/top-4, likely NHL player in some capacity.
Tier 3: Bottom-6/bottom-pair likely ceiling, strong 100GP potential.
Tier 4: Very interesting players, need to show more.
Tier 5: Less interesting, need to show a lot more.
Tier 6: Probably not an NHL level prospect.

Great list, it makes you realize how unimportant any pick outside the top 3 rounds are when all of our top 8 are 1st, 2nd or 3rd round picks.

That is a contending team on paper.

If Moore can't make that team win games, he's not going to last very long... at least I hope.

Isn't the new Marlies GM from the same USHL team that Moore came from?

I haven’t been a fan of what Moore has done so far, and you’re right, there’s zero excuse with the talent he has available.

However, I get the feeling he may not be as close to the hot seat as we’d all like

Yes he is.

I don't think Moore was dealt a good hand in his time with the Marlies so far though. Those teams had very little depth and skill since he took over. The team was depleted and going through a tough time with a mix of a lot of promotions to the Leafs, injuries, trades to improve the Leafs and a lack of ELCs coming through. I never expected the Marlies since Moore took over to be as dominant as they were with Keefe. But I still expected better and he didn't have a bad team to work with.

Now though it feels like Moore will have much better depth overall. The only question mark right now to me is goaltending.

While Moore and Hardy might have a good relationship, I think Gilman (Basically the Shanny of the Marlies right now) will want to see results. But you are right that it might be a little too early for Moore to be on the hot seat.

To be fair I do believe anyone in any tier is close enough that you could swap them besides Niemela who I think is the clear best player in the 2nd tier and ill probably move him to tier 1 soon. Aka 4th rounder Abramov, and 6th rounder Miettinen are virtually equal level prospects as 6-8 for me. Not to mention don't sleep on 4th round pick Abruzzese who could prove his freshman season was no fluke, and 5th/6th round picks in Kral and Holmberg who had incredible seasons last year.

Moore has failed with the ahl team with the highest budget for 2-3 years even if you remove sandin and liljegren. It’s like failing with the yankees except moore is failing with a team with both money and analytics. Every ahl team struggles with callups and injuries, but they adjust. We have depth even down in the echl. He constantly throws players under the bus, and the players aside from robertson are unmotivated. Moore doesn’t really make adjustments and the defensive zone coverage is pathetic. The marlies should be a playoff team with an average coach. Any other coach in his position would have been fired.

Moore has been terrible. If his teams continue to play as they did last year, he should be canned before Christmas.

The forwards were pretty good, but the defensive and goaltending depth was tested very harshly. They used 8 different goaltenders in 35-40 ish games (I forgot how many games they played exactly). Sandin only played 1 AHL game, Liljegren missed a chunk due to injury + his call up. Kivihalme was injured for awhile. Rosen, Duszak and Hollowell had to play a lot from my memory.

Not too mention, Snowden was promoted to assistant coach this off season. If the Marlies get off to a slow start, it could be the end of Moore since his replacement is right beside him.
