Hadn't really been following our prospects that closely this season and just looked at Minten's stats.

Very suprised to see he was 4th in the entire WHL in powerplay goals scored with 17.

Might just be a prospect that needs to get a little stronger and a little faster before you see his true upside.

He had trouble at the beginning of the year, but basically around Christmas a switch flipped and he improved. Still has issues with overshooting from poor areas, isn't the strongest passer, and really wasn't put In a spot to succeed at 5v5, but overall the year so far is a step in the right direction. I think the Leafs expected more out of him based on their more recent 2nd round forwards looking like steals after being drafted, but he should become top-dog next season when Stankoven and Bankier go pro instead of being the matchup defensive C.

He's gonna have a solid defensive foundation to fall back on when he's going against other top guys.

2023 OHL Priority Selection Mock Draft & Preview

The 2023 OHL Priority Selection is set to go this weekend, with rounds 1-3 occurring Friday night. The Erie Otters will select first after winning the draft lottery and all signs point to them taking Halton defender Matthew Schaefer.

It should be noted that this collaborative mock draft was started over a week ago, before things start to leak out regarding placement. Even if the mock does not end up being extremely accurate, the true purpose of this piece is to provide you with information on some of the top players available this year.

This is the fifth year that I have gathered scouts together for this piece. It seems like with each passing year, I am able to see less and less U16 action. This couldn't be more true now that I've taken on the director of scouting role with McKeen's Hockey. Thus, I love putting this together to help me learn too. This piece wouldn't be possible without the contributions of some terrific scouts.

It was a fairly weak UFA crop out of the NCAA this year.

Once/if Colin Graf signs, I think that is pretty much all of the higher end guys for this year. The rest are probably heading back to the NCAA or getting AHL deals at best.

Euro crop is also pretty bad but there is Pulli (rumoured to be signing with San Jose when his deal expires), Haman Aktell, and maybe a few others who can attract some attention. Outside of hunting for a few more AHL contracts out of the NCAA and CHL, I doubt the Leafs get involved this year.

Ethan De Jong out of Quinnipiac wouldn't be a bad target for an AHL deal. Arguably the top guy out of the NCAA at this point (who would likely be willing to take an AHL deal and whose rights were not owned by another team like Tychonick's).

Graf is going back to Quinnipac next year.

The saviour the Marlies needed.

Honestly, they need any kind of offensive firepower they can get. I doubt Hirvonen is going to light the scoresheet on fire but he is better than the ECHL guys they've been using.

A lot can happen and change in the next 6 months. The GM could be different, the coach could be different and players can get signed, injured or traded. Waivers also plays a big part of the roster selection. Typically teams don't leave 5-6 roster spots open for rookies/young players either. The depth is good though and that's a good thing.

I am looking forward to seeing what Hirvonen can do on the Marlies. I'm not high on him but maybe he'll prove me wrong.
