Anyone have any guesses on the development path for Knies?

My guess would be that the Leafs will try and get him to the Marlies within a season or two. I imagine Knies would be good with that too pending current COVID restrictions here. He would likely get some NHL time pretty quickly based on his size and skillset.

Not to get too off topic with this Russian stuff again. But Roman Rotenberg named himself head coach of SKA St. Petersburg recently. Do you eventually see him doing the same with the Russian National Team? Is that the endgame here?
If so what does that mean for players in (or heading to) North America. e.g.Amirov, SDA, Ovchinikov, Abramov?

Why would it mean anything for Ovchinnikov, Amirov, Abramov, whoever?

But yes, Rotenberg's endgame is probably coaching/complete control of the national team. With that in mind he was recently entirely pushed aside and marginalized by other higher-ups in the Federation and KHL for control of the Olympic team. The situation likely expedited his decision to coach SKA to regain or show some authority.
So if he fails with SKA, it's probably the end of the Roma Rotenberg experiment. If he succeeds....who knows what will happen.
The top of the Russian hockey pyramid resembles an ever shifting cast of characters in a semi-power struggle.

My bet is that he's a Marlie to finish the season on a PTO with an ELC that starts next year, and a fair shot at going head to head with Robertson for the 3LW spot (with a bargain signing that they have to unseat)

Knies was definitely always the most noticeable player when he's on the ice. It'll be curious if he spends another year in college (I suspect he will as he rounds out a few things about his game and skating). But he's certainly ahead of most estimates about development cycle from the draft

Koster makes a lot of "quite" but smart plays, like quick passes at the right time. Things that don't always show up on a highlight reel but make him a solid player to keep an eye on.

My guess would be one more year of college, one year in the AHL, and then a fixture on the Leafs LW for years to come.

They said in the first period of the Minnesota vs Alaska stream that Kyle Dubas was in town watching Koster and Knies. I wonder if he got around to speaking with Meyers as well. One can hope at least!
Oooppps…..wrong guy.
But yup, might even be a good clear path to a job for a C .

That would be tampering, but I don’t think a ‘nudge nudge wink wink’ would be .

How is it tampering? Meyers is a free agent and is going to sign with an NHL team at the end of the year anyway. No one has his draft rights and NCAA schools don't explicitly have a contract signed with players saying they cannot talk to outside teams. You see players changing schools and even go the CHL route all the time.

Yes, you beat my edit when I briefly confused Meyers and McBain, and made an eager attempt at a joke about the wrong dude.
You were too quick.
Regardless, could be a great opportunity with the Leafs for a college UFA C, depending on the off-season.

doubt it, he’s going back to college next year.

i don't get to watch him, but something in my gut tells me Koster could end up being a surprise kind of like Kral has been when he turns pro (assuming he does with us)

Has this been reported?

it hasn’t been reported but why would the leafs turn him pro this year and waste ELC years with him when we are jammed on the left side.

Bunting
Mikhayev
Kerfoot
Engvall
Ritchie
Clifford
Robertson (who may get called up towards the end of the year and be a black ace)
Steeves (who looks like an NHL player)

not to mention all the guys on the Marlies.

it literally makes no sense. There’s no space for him. He has no Junior rights, so I’m not sure they sign him and send him to the WHL either. They should let him go back to Minnesota and dominate even more next year. He still has aspects of his game to work on. Next year when we have a ton of expiring contracts on the left side would be the most logical thing because he then comes in to replace those guys on ELC

Mikheyev and Ritchie won't be on the Leafs next year.

I think hes likely to end up doing one more year in college but it's a decision ultimately they will leave up to him likely. Some PK players want to start making money ASAP and want to go pro early - his body would let him, I don't think the organization is going to be too fussed about it one way or another.

Left side door s gonna go from dearth to depth in a hurry, and that’s before RoniH, NickA and PontusH’s fates are determined.

ritchie’s signed for two years. Unless they trade him or buy him out he’s most likely back. For sure it’ll be his decision whether to turn pro or not. I just don’t see the incentive for him to turn pro, it’s not a guarantee that he cracks the Leafs. (I really think Dubas will give Robertson every chance to make the leafs next year), they will still have a shit ton of left wings under contract next year. So might as well go back to Minnesota and just light it up again and gain more confidence, sign after that season and join the leafs for playoffs end of the season.

They will pay to trade Ritchie or buy him out. They need the space with the cap being flat to sign Campbell. Mrazek and Ritchie both have to be moved in some way.

I don't think Knies would make the Leafs out of camp but half a year in the AHL + a couple injuries and he could be in. I still think it's likely he goes back to school but the path isn't too far outlandish for him to get in. If they sign his linemate he might also consider playing in the AHL with him as a good opportunity as well.

Just don't think anything is really decided yet and it's pretty uncertain.

Leafs better sign Ben Meyers too.

How good is he is my question.
Like he looked decent last year, but with Knies looking amazing he suddenly looks much better.
I wonder if there is a fear that he is being dragged along by Knies (or vice versa, Knies is being helped by Meyers)

Either way, would be pretty darn nice for both to go to the AHL and still be on the same line. Knies Meyers Amirov?
