“Mints, you taking the morning skate today?” Malhotra asked.

“It’s optional,” Minten replied, showing his hand. “Optional means optional, right?”

Minten will never forget Malhotra’s stone-cold look.

“Kampfer, you taking the optional?” Malhotra asked.

“Yes,” Kampf replied.

“Mints, you taking the optional?” Malhotra asked again, allowing little margin for error.

Minten learned for at least the first three years of his NHL career, there is no option for an optional morning skate.

My respect for Malholtra just tripled.

We have no seconds we are in danger of trading a first and no real picks next year.
2nd is the only pick we're missing this year, and we have two extra 5ths and a 7th. We have 5 picks next year, and a good group of prospects.
It's debatable whether this year's team is worth investing a 1st into, but it's not like it would destroy us moving forward.

We don't have any real picks next year and our defense has Niemela. It's an organizational shortcoming.

I'm curious about the 2024 or 2025, 5th. rounder from Chicago.
Who get's it?

I'm pretty sure Calgary is getting their own 5th round pick back (Calgary -> Chicago -> Vancouver -> Calgary). And we're getting Chicago's 5th round pick.

All picks are "real". Niemela is a good prospect. A competitive team's prospect pool is not going to be dominant in all positions.
We don't need to abandon improving the NHL team in order to refocus our drafting on defense.

Bunkis podcast had former scout Jason Bukala on, and he was raving about Cowan. He had him 40th last year, so higher than most, but said he'd slot him at 7 this year. He said he's looks "like a modern day Darcy Tucker" for the Leafs, "relentless", called him "untouchable". Minten he feels is 2.5 center, which is what most of us see.

That's an interesting term 2.5 centre, so a nice 3C.

To me, 3C feels like Minten's ceiling - I think we'd do really well for him to develop into a long-term 3C option

I actually feel like his development wouldn't be all that stunted by playing 4C next year either.

Niemela is it. He maybe a 3rd pairing. The rest are a stretch. If we can get a guy with term maybe you trade the first but not for a rental. We definitely need a younger defense. Maybe it can be fixed in ufa but from what I see no one gives away Top 3 RHD. We have thrown away too many picks and now we pay for that.

Chadwick has had an impressive year too. The pool isn't as bad as some like to think.
We shouldn't throw away the 1st, but that doesn't mean there are no scenarios where we should use it.
I reserve judgement on Chadwick, he is 18. In the immediate future we have Niemela with an aging defense. If we trade that first it has to be for term.

Has anyone gotten views in on Chadwick? I've gotten to see Cowan a bit with watching games on the TV, the odd AHL game but some prospects we have I am clueless on.

Is he Nielsen or is he exciting?

We have other D prospects than just Niemela. Niemela is just the most likely to make it.
Our D signed/controlled beyond this year - Rielly, McCabe, Liljegren, Benoit, and Timmins - are all age 24-30. That's not old.
By the logic that Chadwick is too young to matter, then I'm not sure how an even younger D drafted next draft would matter.

I like Rifai and Kokkonen

Treliving will change that when he joined the Leafs.
He mentioned that Centerman and Defenseman would be a priority.
That is why I believe Minten is going know where.

Once JT comes off the books Tre can go hunting for bear. We can add 2 decent players for $11M
