I've been so down on the Canucks this season to the point that I stopped watching the last month. However... I think they made the right moves yesterday and I think the clock is ticking on Boeser... so not gonna judge them just on these moves yet. My interest is piqued again.

I think the weight of Miller's presence being lifted off a lot of players will make a bigger difference than we think.

There was word a little while ago that EP wasn't the only one fed up with JT. You may be right.

I dont understand how ppl criticize moving VD and Heinen. They werent working out and dragging the team so we packaged them as a dump for a great player.

Ppl then croticize management for signing them in the first place. Well they swung and miss and fix it.

They cant sign all Sherwood and Suter.

Like is the only acceptable scenario signing home run ufa only. Sounds really childish imo.

So what you are saying is that they don't deserve blame for signing them and they get credit for spending assets to get rid of them? Sounds like they can do no wrong.

No think its net neutral. Bad signing, good to jettison them. So all the fsir criticism of VD last few months is called for and acknowledged. now theyre gone and know whos a bad player.

For me, I just wish they wouldn't spend money on players just to spend money...most deals seem to have a "money in/money out" component to them...if you don't have to give bad money back to teams you can likely extract that value back in the trade. We needed a top 4 defenseman the beginning of the season but they spent money on unnecessary UFA's instead of keeping their powder dry for what they really needed.

I was accepting of the JT Miller trade because he had to go—it was only going to do more damage if he stayed.

But I was pretty disappointed that they traded that 1st round pick just for Marcus Pettersson and to dump some cap hits. It feels like they sold low on the value of that draft pick.

However, this morning I am slightly more optimistic about what they did. They did major surgery to give this group this year the opportunity to get back into the playoffs. And if things do go off the rails (like, Hughes is injured, or EP40 disappoints) they may still have an opportunity to sell at the deadline and flip Marcus Pettersson to recoup that 1st.

They gave themselves more options going forward than what they had yesterday.
MP is going to be on the team next year with a new contract. Watch for a Boeser trade at the TDL if we’re out of it.

Morning after thoughts:

-This sucks. The best chance we had for success in the next few years was with EP and JT. It's a total organizational failure that their feud was able to get to this point. We needed someone, anyone, to be the adult in the room, and the fact that we couldn't find someone to do that is frankly a failure at every level: player leadership, coaching, and management.

-Quinn Hughes may be the most important player this franchise has ever had and you HAVE to go for it every year that you have him on the roster. You also just have to go for it at some point in general - you can't wait around forever trying to min-max every transaction you make.

-If you assume JT wanted out, as it sounds like he did, then the question becomes whether Allvin managed that situation well. In the circumstances I think the JT trade is likely about much as we could have gotten for him before the end of the season. The market was small, and made smaller by a massively superior asset (50% retained Rantanen) unexpectedly coming available. I hoped that they would hold off until the deadline but there's no guarantee of a better offer there nor is there a guarantee that the Rangers deal is still available at that time.

-Neither of Chytil or Mancini are terribly well established NHLers and it seems like the team is gambling on both having some upside we haven't seen yet.

-The Canucks' own pick is probably more likely to be a lottery pick than the Rangers' in 2026. The Rangers pick is overwhelmingly likely to be a mid to late 1st rounder - which I'm convinced are the most overvalued assets in the sport.

-M Petey deal is contingent on getting him re-signed but I really like him as a target. He's not a "brand name" type player - was not a high draft pick, does not play a flashy game, has never had great counting stats - but we need a guy who can turn the puck over in our own end and get it to the right end of the ice and it sounds like that's who this guy is.

-I like the idea of getting business done both in advanced of the trade deadline. I think the TDL is going to be a seller's market given the playoff battle in the east. There are a ton of playoff starved franchises n the mix (OTT, CBJ, MTL, DET) that you have to think will get pressure from management to buy.

-Similarly, I think there will be a ton of money chasing limited targets on FA day this year so the opportunity to lock up M Petey before then seems like a positive.

-I think we are going to see this team re-tool from the run-and-gun high octane offense to a more grindy, low event style of play. I'm not sure there is a ton of precedent for teams like this having success, but I'm not sure we have the top end talent to do much else.

-The team is 100% all in on an EP40 resurgence. If he doesn't find his game, the reality is this team is not going anywhere. I am honestly pretty skeptical this happens as I think this guy is the biggest headcase we've had since Bertuzzi, but it's probably the right bet to make even if I personally doubt it pays off.

i think boeser is next to go they have an off day today.. so maybe alvin is cooking another deal. what would be a reasonable price for him? 2 2nds? a 1st+prospect? or a roster player added with the with 1st and prospect. team got faster which we needed. one of our "media gurus" will get to investigating about the "locckerrom drama in a few weeks/days the truth will come out. why was JT suspended or aka "on leave for 10 games" what happen etc etc.

Wow so much going on.

Miller had to go, I’m fine with the deal. I was prepared for it to be underwhelming. Chytil is the perfect 3C. Mancini is the x-factor, if he turns into a solid 3RHD then it’s a win.

I never grew attached to the 1st they picked up, I expected it to get flipped. The defense has been swimming all year. Barely surviving. I see D-Pettersson as the long term partner for Willander. If that ends up being your 2nd pair then you’re in great shape.

Build from the back end out.

Now I’m really curious. They need to either resign Boeser or move him. Could they end up with another 1st and move it for a centre? That’s what I’m watching for.

This team is allergic to picks, so anything they get in a Boeser deal likely gets flipped.

I want Boeser, Suter, Forbort and Juulsen to the move. It hasn’t worked, things need to change.
trade ALL the ufas. for picks and prospects. and go big game hunting in the offseason.

Maybe @Knight53 was on to something.

I think the 2 weeks after 4 nations will steer the direction the club takes. If they go on a rotten run & move out other pieces then taking on an expiring contract for a pick isn't the worst idea. Would give them more trade options since they are allergic to picks.

What would be a realistic return for Brock ?
2 2nds and a roster player or prospect. if nobody is willing to give up their own 1st.

my list to dump was the following:

heinen
desharnais

suter
forbort
juulsen
demko/lankinen
boeser*
garland*

garland id trade if his value was very high
either we re-sign boeser. or we dump him, the others, and use the cap space to take on bad contracts that expire this year for additional picks.
if lankinen or demko are traded.. while im not 100% on board with it, but if columbus were to go for boeser, id take a slightly retained elvis(as a back up) if it made the prospect coming from columbus better.

also the more i look at the overall deal with nyr and pitts..( its basically a 3 team trade) while i would of liked more for miller, i dont think they did bad if they sign pettersson considering the situation around miller.

realistically its the following

miller, cap dump, cap dump, roster spot, ok prospect, low end prospect

for

pettersson, chytil, ok rhd prospect, connor

Boeser is gone, I get the impression Rutherford doesn’t think he’s worth the price tag, and I suspect there is some belief his season highs were tied to Miller.

Think they will try to sign Lankinen, though his price just went up with the newly released cap numbers.

I’d actually sign Forbort again as depth. And think you need to try to sign Suter at this point given the centre depth and the higher cap.

Interested to see what sort of return Granlund gets. If the Canucks do decide to move on from Boeser, this could be a bit telling of what to expect in terms of a return. Granlund plays a more desirable position, but Boeser is the better / more proven player, IMO.

I’ve just come to a state of acceptance.

There’s no point getting my hopes up because something will always happen to damper or ruin them.

We will be stuck in perpetual mediocrity where being good but not good enough is acceptable.

It is what it is.

I just want to watch some fun hockey. Maybe one day the stars will align, like with the Capitals or Blues, and they will win a Cup. Besides, with all the referee bullshit that has continuously happened in the playoffs, my overall enjoyment has greatly dominated anyway.

We have an insider.

I think you let Suter walk and promote Raty or Sasson. Need to throw a huge contract at Ehlers, Marner, or Rantanen this offseason.
