Good question, on availability.

Someone likely has the answer.

My thoughts, without researching, is if his KHL season is over he could sign and play because he's Leafs property and wouldn't be leaving his team to play for the Leafs.

Maybe a good search would help clarify?

Bugger:

Grebyonkin's contract expires on the last day of the KHL championships (April 30). How far Metallurg goes in the playoffs will not affect or influence this.

This is it exactly. There are seven forwards on that list that could crack the line-up over the next few years. They won't all make it, but we only need two or three on top of Knies, Holmberg and Robertson.

This is why we focus our cap space and trade capital on the D. We need to replace Bertuzzi, Domi, Jarnkrok, Kampf with guys on ELCs. We take that $12M + cap increases and invest in d-men around Rielly, Liljegren, Benoit, and Niemela.
Those are the four. If we can land a top 2 dman the other spots are easy to fill.

I'm sure he could sign with the Leafs anytime, being available would be after his season is over.

It isn't like they can't be under a NHL contract and play in the KHL.

The NHL suspended their transfer agreement with the KHL two years ago, so right now, they can't

Dmitry Ovchinnikov played in the KHL last year, and has been under contract with Leafs since February 2022.

So I suppose with no transfer agreement it doesn't matter?

They cancelled the transfer agreement just after he signed his deal (March 2022), on the heals of Russia's escalation into Ukraine

I'm sure a team could pull a player over if they really wanted, but it might open a can of worms

That situation ... and there are people getting citizenship there to play in the KHL.

Amazing what people will do.

The NHL formally suspended the KHL-NHL transfer agreement, but said they'd still abide by the spirit of the agreement. Bettman knows a tit-for-tat poaching war isn't good for anybody.

Regarding Ovechinnikov.... He had a NHL contract but Toronto loaned him to the KHL. The same was done with Amirov too. Loans to various Euro Leagues are not uncommon for signed NHL prospects.

Unless Metallurg gives consent, Grebyonkin will not play in the NHL before April 30.

If their season is over, they'd likely give consent if he's going to sign anyway.

As you said, the teams would want to maintain good relationships. Loans back to the KHL are better than the KHL losing players to the AHL.

Correct. KHL teams releasing players early isn't uncommon.
Wouldn't surprise me if Grebyonkin was in Toronto before April 30 (if Magnitka is eliminated). But, ultimately, the final say isn't up to him or the Leafs.

Regarding loans back to KHL...... I don't think the NHL gives a toss about maintaining good relationships with KHL teams. Rather loans are a method to maintain good relationships with their drafted players.
A lot of Russians (especially the higher-end prospects) are lukewarm about playing in the AHL, so adding a 'loan stipulation' to a contract in the event they don't make the NHL is a win-win for both player and NHL team..

Maybe pull a Kulemin and win the MVP before coming over to the Leafs for an intro.

Perhaps he will in playoffs?

Probably not but one can wish.

Hard to say.

I really hope he makes it over in the playoffs for the Marlies

That would give us Aky, Grebyonkin and Peksa in the organization.

I would maybe try to look for another Russian guy that's older that might help them on the transition. Offer up 1 year deal 1M 1-way for someone.

You mean like Lyubushkin?

Jason Bukala gives an awesome update on the Leafs top 5 prospects, where Cowan would go in this years draft, and the value of the Leafs 1st round pick.
