Player Discussion: Mark S Discussion

Is there a quote on Laine about Little? My recollection is that got pulled out of context. Like Laine said he wants to get paid like Marner/Rantene. Chevy said those are 90 point guys and you are 70. Laine replied well they have Matthews/MacKinnon and I have Little, of course those guys have more points than me. I don’t feel that is unreasonable.

Then it’s turned into Laine said Little is a terrible centre!!!!!!

It was this:

"When I'm negotiating a new contract, I always want to know who I'll be playing with," Laine told Iltalehti in remarks published Tuesday. "With my merits, I would play with the best elsewhere. Everybody who understands something about hockey knows that.

"There are the top lines and then there has been our line. I'll play with whomever I'm told to."

I love to think that the Jets are going to 'go for it' this coming season. New coach, hopefully a couple of roster changes, a couple of rookies step up.... it will be a fun season to watch.

Actually every season is fun as long as we are working hard and efficiently. I can take it when we just are not that good, it's when we are underachieving that I tend to tune out. My 'give a crap' level is equivalent to the team I'm watching.

Yea I agree. I had trouble this past season when the team seemed off from an effort perspective. I am hoping the new coaching staff and a reboot gets us in a good spot next season. That and Helle’s kid will be at a very different stage and not the new born anymore. Here’s to a big bounce back.

rofl so dregar on overdrive just said that the scheifele smoke was overblown.... wasn't he on the rod pederson podcast saying scheifele won't be back...
Yeah I figured scheif would stay... chevys one two centre comment was telling

Trotz will get him in shape but it sure will be hard to cheer for the guy

If Scheifele gets back to playing like her did 2017/18, I won't have any trouble cheering.

I'd be beyond thrilled if the 17/18 version (attitude/effort/performance) of Scheifele returned to the Jets.

I think that applies to most here: few, if any want to see the "good" Scheifele traded. Most expect he'll bounce back if he is traded and it will look like a bad trade in retrospect. But if we're getting "bad" Scheifele that is apathetic and disinterested on D and is causing issues for the team then most expect it will be addition by subtraction.

I'd rather see Scheifele retire as a Jet but not at the expense of team success.

Shcheifele just needs to play shorter faster shifts. His average shift length over the past few years has been in the high 50's. Maybe if you have the natural speed and explosiveness of an Ovechkin on McDavid you can play long shifts and still be fast enough to be effective. Shcheifele isn't a bad skater but he's not in that company so he needs to keep his shift length under 50 seconds so he can play a higher energy game.

The key to the next coach will be demanding this from the veteran players and being willing to bench them if they don't comply.

not surprised. personally have cooled off the idea of scheifele being traded. i think the org. will see how he responds to new coaching... if it's more of the same lackadaisical to poor effort in 2/3s of the ice, then perhaps deal him at the 2023 TDL IF we are not in the PO mix.

i also think a new coach ie: Trotz, would rather have a player of scheifele's caliber on their team for the next couple seasons than not. i think a good coach can work with him to mitigate some of his deficiencies with a certain line-mate mix or matching him up against certain opposition during the game etc, or get him motivated to play strong in all 3 areas of the ice. if Trotz is all that he is made out to be, this should be an area where he thrives in.

Agree. See if Trotz can get him back to where he was. A new coach is going to have their work cut out for them, but there are a lot of good players that could really be a good team if maximized.

I have to say I've been in the trade 55 camp pretty firmly over the past year, but I'm starting to change my mind a bit.

IF he really wants to be here and be part of the solution, and
IF we get a coach that will hold him accountable and help him return to a more all round performer, I'd be happy to have him stay.

Unfortunately, we don't really know what's going on in Brighteyes' head - I'm hoping the org is more plugged into that and makes the right decision.

How I picture Chevy's post-season meeting with ScheifMe...

FWIW, Scheifele was just made the Facebook banner poster in an orange jersey for National Indigenous People’s Day. Not sure if there is any deeper meaning towards his renewed commitment, conspiracy theorists can handle that. Happy NIPD, all.

Agreed, but will Slcshuffles play her like that if he gets the hook so quick from <<insert Coach name here, heck lets call him Barry>>? Racing back high and heavy backchecks were a major chunk of his ice-borne charcouterie board in the vaunted '17 season... not to add up my chickens here, but perhaps Big Barry could serve up some Duckish wisdom to remind Shuffles of his pedigree.

Yea my emotional me was in the trade Scheif for fair value camp at the end of the season and I would still be ok with that........... but.......... if Trotz is behind the bench I will happily change course just to observe what Barry and Mark can get done together. That would be fun to watch.

I want him gone. But we have 2 years with him pld and helly left.

That gives us next year to go for it and then trade them all after that as I don’t see all of them wanting to stay.

Trading Wheeler could end up making us stronger but trading sheif and Wheeler in the same offseason doesn’t really help us. I don’t see a return making us better

This is a really bad spot we are in. But it’s chevy and chip and fault 100 percent and it’s up to them to save this franchise

The main reason why i am still keep Mark is,
Historically
Barrie Colts
And
Jets first 7 years
He has been a good model player on and off the ice.

Something happened

I want to see with a new coach and if Wheeler is really will go. How he respond.

Mark at his best is (can be) the best Jets , hopefully it gets sorted out. As TRUE 1C is very very hard to find.
