Player Discussion: Mark S Discussion

This is a bizarre take. First of all you don’t know that’s he’s openly telling his teammates he wants to play for another team. Second, the proof is in the pudding with 55 & 26. We are where we are because of them and Maurice.
There’s a better source about PLD openly talking to teammates about wanting to play in Montreal then there is that Wheeler and Scheifele are the reasoning the Jets aren’t in a good spot.

He doesn't need to pull a "complete 180" on defense.

If he can get to being even average as a defender, he will easily outscore his deficiency's in that end. We are talking about one of the premier offensive players in the game.

To borrow some baseball nomenclature - get from being 70 grade offense, 35 grade defense to 70/45 and that's a supremely valuable player.

I also think usage isn't spoken of enough - he shouldn't be playing 28 min a night, its easier to defend with legs that aren't primarily composed of lactic acid.
Nobody played 28 minutes a night last year. Top TOI player was Seth Jones at 26:12. Scheifele was 80th at 21:08. And that wasn't any 21:08 of constant hustle. A lot of that was floating around aimlessly waiting for someone else to get him the puck, or slowly gliding back to the bench while play headed back into our zone. The guy just dogged it last year. If play like that is leaving him weak in the legs, he shouldn't be a 1C.

We may see some early buy in next year. However, if he sees that playing D is dropping his offensive numbers, I don't expect that buy in to last. He has his next contract to think about. Nor do I expect Bowness to get tough with him on a season long basis. I think there's a lot of talk right now, but talk is cheap this time of year.

I have to say that is the most upbeat and happy I've seen Mark in a couple of years. Perhaps all he and this group needed was a reset with a new coaching staff. He talked about the group needing some change and I think it was pretty apparent to most things got stale under Moe and likely lead to complacency abd frustrarion.

Anyhow we shall see how he and the group does but it seems his attitude is going to be much better coming into this year. Glad he's skated a lot with a lot of his teammates. Also happy he's been working with Cole as I think he will be spending a lot of time on the ice with him next year.

He's a much better gaslighter than PLD, I'll give him that. But to be fair, TNSE gave him a better forum than "go in your basement and turn on your computer and face the press".

Hopefully he's genuine. Time will tell

This is because Chef is in the city for his golf tournament, while PLD lives in Montréal in the off-season.

If we get prime Scheifele and a solid season from PLD, our top 6 is going to look great.

PLD didn't get to interview with TNSEs newest cheerleader either on a golf course. Guy was in a hostage room

Not surprised Sara didn't ask the question that would challenge Mark's assertion that this was all a media misunderstanding.

Dave Lowry exit interview with media: "Mark needs to decide what he wants to do" (paraphrasing)

EVERYONE seems to forget this quote.
Why did Dave say this if it was simply Mark being frustrated with the way things went down on the ice?

There was several reports throughout the year of serious friction between the coach and Scheifele, they are downplaying it now but the decision Scheifele had to make may have been if he wanted to stick around if Lowry was the coach. Since Lowry is no longer coaching it probably made the decision a lot easier for Scheifele.

do you think it was a real consideration for Chevy & Co. to have D. Lowry to remain HC next year then?

if so, then i guess id agree with you on scheifele's non-committal attitude. But i really have a tough time thinking that was the case.... although Chevy did say they could interview again lol.

Hey I'm totally open to the idea that Mark's issue was all about coaching. Thing is, his horrible defensive game and weak "give a shite effort" started while Maurice was here. And it carried over to Lowery. Was there friction with both then? If his problem was always coaching then this bodes well for him remaining a Jet long term if Bowness is someone he gets along with.

Listened again to what Lowry Said. He said that he needs to have a sit down exit interview with management and then make a decision. Didn't say he was frustrated about how the season ended. So yeah, not sure I buy what Mark said.

Glass half full - it sounds like he made that decision now and it was one that favours the Jets based on the latest interview

I saw him yesterday and asked him if he was playing in the tournament we were and he was playing a practice round for the Manitoba Open. Said he played ok. Seemed very friendly and upbeat and he was just going to do the interview with Sarah.

If so, I would have more respect for him if he told Sara that.

When a coach says a player needs to talk to management and make decision with 2 years left in his contract,, its very obvious something was up.

I mean that is also what Mark said. He said he wanted to have a conversation on the direction of the team with Chevy. I personally have no issue with players wanting clarification on the direction of the team. It sounds like that conversation and the new coaching hires have gotten Mark back on board and energized. Let's hope that is how the whole group sees it and we get a much better year.

this is an off-season interview, at a golf event that was conducted, promoted and uploaded to the internet by the Jets organization. they are not going to have anyone coming off morose, or anything that shows members of the org. in an unfavorable manner. it's a puff piece.

They clearly had to put out something upbeat and happy to counteract all the negative press. That's all it is, PR.

No offence guys but this is a TNSE produced piece... there was likely a long chat about legal consequences and contracts this summer... hopefully he's ready to play defence and be the 200' guy we were told he was.

A disgruntled PLD will still play hard - our playoff hopes rely on Scheif buying in
