Player Discussion: Mark S Discussion

this is an off-season interview, at a golf event that was conducted, promoted and uploaded to the internet by the Jets organization. they are not going to have anyone coming off morose, or anything that shows members of the org. in an unfavorable manner. it's a puff piece.

Of course it's a PR piece. That doesn't mean that Mark can't be re-energized and ready to come in under new coaching and help the team win next year.

I choose to be optimistic and think the players are ready to buy in and play to their potential. Guess we won't find out one way or another until the fall.

I never said he couldn't be re-energized? That has nothing to do with my post or the one I'm responding toward.

Hey I'm totally open to the idea that Mark's issue was all about coaching. Thing is, his horrible defensive game and weak "give a shite effort" started while Maurice was here. And it carried over to Lowery. Was there friction with both then? If his problem was always coaching then this bodes well for him remaining a Jet long term if Bowness is someone he gets along with.
I am replying to my post because of what I just heard from McIntyre on WST. Apparently Mark said (about coaching) "I've never really had a good communicator as a coach" (paraphrasing). This was a general media availability after the Orlesky interview.

. Perhaps he didn't get along with Maurice after all. Or, it turned sour.

Oh I imagined things turned sour. It gets even more shocking that Maurice survived as long as he did seeing as he lost the teams best player. What did Maurice just have Wheeler in his corner by the end?

I'll admit I went into that Scheif interview ready to hate on him and looking for bad attitude. Maybe he's just a really good actor, but I kind of doubt many hockey players are and I haven't seen much evidence of it in him before. He honestly "won me over" to an extent in that he seemed legitimately relaxed and happy. I don't think I've seen him happy like that before. Maybe this is a sign he is buying what Bones is selling and he's ready for a re-set of sorts?

Yeah it was PR/damage control like the PLD interview, and he said similar stuff ... but it just had a whole better vibe. Same talking points even with the "press blew stuff out of proportion" and "I was too honest". But I am kind of getting the feel maybe he really did just fire from the hip while pissed after a bad season. Who knew what, but something was definitely going on with him last season and even earlier. He seemed rejeuvenated so hopefully we'll see prime Schief (or a close facsimile) this season. We get that, and PLD works his butt off for that juicy UFA contract, Jets could surprise many and make some noise.

Jets won’t be surprising me. Two great centres if their mind is right with great wingers at their sides. This team will do some damage.

If part (or all) of Scheif's issues were related to coaching then that would pretty much be the best case scenario for us. I know many of us have ragged on him hard this past year but I think almost everybody would love to see him kick some ass this year.

Wonder if playing with and mentoring Perfetti would be an additional motivator. Still dying to see Ehlers Scheif Perfetti line up together.

I think that if Mark‘s body language was off and his tone felt negative we would all be commenting on that and what does it mean? I think it’s OK to read into his positive attitude and body language in this interview.

I also agree with Mark’s comments on how he started that year end interview. He did say he liked the city, liked being at Winnipeg Jet and he wanted to play here. Very little was mention of that and everything about what he said after that comment.

I actually believe Mark does kind of want to be here while PLD wants nothing to do with us. Unlike this interview I had no positive feelings towards PLDs interview

55 damage control interview
Of course it was, but I still get the impression that he is intent on making amends for his play. Call me naive, but I believe that he is not looking to leave (unlike Dubois, who did nothing to convince me that he is willing to stay longer than he has to).

If Bowness can help improve his 200 foot game, I expect a much improved season from him.

55 damage control interview
Of course. Even the YouTube video uploaded by the Jets official account is titled in that way.

Let's see what his all around play, effort outside of offense etc looks like this year. Don't care what he says in interviews really. it's almost 5 seasons now since imo he's shown consistent 2 way effort.

I want to see Scheif play as hard every shift like Wheeler does.
If he does, I won't have any problems with him at all.

Trade Dillon for Bailey and a 3rd.

Perfetti Scheif Ehlers
KC PLD Wheeler
Bailey Lowry Apples
Barron Gus Toni
Hark

JMo Schmidt
Sammy Pionk
Heinola DD
Plug and play Stanley/Kovs depending on opponent.

I honestly think Chevy is waiting to see what is on the waiver wire at the very beginning of the season when teams have to be cap compliant.
An injury to "I can't remember who" one year forced the Jets to put Perreault on waivers and we could have lost him. There could be some good forwards put on waivers this year.
That or he has a deal worked out with the Isles but is waiting until they sign Kadri?

Liked the Schief interview. He was upbeat, in a relaxed mood, and said the right things. I didn’t really have a problem with the damage control PLD interview either.

What I really care about though is how both guys perform on the ice this season. Here’s to a turn around where it actually counts.

For a team “trying to contend”, banking on waiver wire pickups ain’t it. Weaponize the cap space we have an try and swing for a difference maker.

Scheifele has 2 years guys, we'll see what happens this upcoming season. This past season was a depressing season for everyone and working as a guest usher for TNSE it certainly trickled into the vibe there with the miserable covid bout in our city. I certainly wouldn't be enthusiastic about going to work while having to physically recover from a serious illness and said workplace is having a complete melt down in all facets (granted I don't get paid millions of dollars to play a sport for a living lol).

I'll wait for this upcoming season to see where he's really at. He has been our franchise center for a long time and he clearly cares more about being here in Winnipeg and doing something with this team than PLD just counting the days and paycheques until he f**ks off to Montreal. The franchise is at an impasse, we changed house with new coaching staff and are restocking the prospect pool to try and retool from the upcoming fallout. Time will tell if we truly sink or swim somewhere with this core, and if Scheifele stays or goes with PLD and Wheeler.

I like Mark way more than PLD. Will be happy to cheer on 55 this fall... can't say the same for 80.
