Player Discussion: Mark S Discussion

It's unfortunate that Mark's career with the Jets may end on this note (if he's traded this summer).

IMO, for most of his time here he has been a great player for us. He's been a 1C, putting up 1C offense for many years. His defense wasn't always as bad as its been in the last few years.

But, if he's not part of the future, then it might be time to move on.

I'm not really concerned that we won't get a good return.

A) He's a PPG Centre on an amazing contract
B) With 2 more years on his deal, Chevy doesn't absolutely trade him if he doesn't get an appropriate return. (Besides the impact to not "moving on", the Jets are not on a clock.)
C) We have not seen Chevy "lose" a trade and get a poor return.

In the post game interviews Wheeler comments about the line of him, Ehlers and Stast and says " our particular line combo, it was to little to late but it makes you wonder what could have been " Am I imagining things or is that a comment on playing( being glued to ) with Sheif.

Maybe Blake is just as pissed off at Mark as the rest of us. Or maybe he's had an epiphany and realized their are other great players he can play with and doesn't need to be glued to Mark.

Watched Mark's post game again and can't shake the sour feeling. I get being frustrated at the end of another early season, but his accountability is non existent. This team has had an identity crisis for a long while and his "me me me" attitude isn't helping. Time to move on. I wanted Mark to retire a Jet cuz I loved him on our team but it's not in the cards. He thinks the grass is greener, he can take his ego out the door and see how other teams deal with it.

Brought this up in another thread

But an aggressive team like PIT I think could be a fit. They have a history of always swingingfor the fences in trades, although Rutherford isn't there anymore, but i bet they'd still want to maximize sid/Guentzels deals.

Malkin is a ufa-I am going to assume he either re signs. They have carter as 3c.

I think Scheifele would be open to playing RW to future HOFs in either Crosby or malkin. Let's say malkin retires from the nhl, then that opens up a 2c spot bw him and carter.

And just a cherry on top, you aren't dealing him within the division, which I think gm's care about more than fans do.

What gets me about all this is....

No one has to even talk to Scheifele today or any day. It's technically "exit interview day" , but so what?

Let's say Scheifele shows up at Chevy's office for the season ending exit interview and Chevy says " Sorry, I'm busy, come back later when you grow up " , what's Scheifele going to do? Other than whine more to his friends, family, and agent.

Scheifele owes this team two more seasons no matter how much he needs to see the team direction before continuing on. He's under contract and has no footing to stand on. Demand a trade. Go ahead. Other players before him have demanded trades for all teams and they were traded after their teams made sure they got what they wanted in return. What's he going to do? Sit at home and not report to camp next season?

My only concern is that he might show up next season and decide to play even worse defense then he has been, he will decide to play the way he wants, and just ignore whomever our coach ends up being. Which will obviously cause an issue.

This is a player that really needs to be traded to Arizona.

look what pld did in columbus!!!...and who does everyone want as their number guy on the team...

Maurice: I think he has that (potential) to be a one-team player that wins cups, and is the captain of it at some point and gets a bronze statue in front of the building kind of guy. I do.

Yeah ........ I'm thinking not so much now.
Was Maurice ever right about anything?

Maurice would have said Russia was right to invade Ukraine if it suited his own interests!

So what are the expectations on return if he is to be moved? I would have to imagine a team like Colorado would be all over getting Schief if the price is right. Do you see the Jets consider moving him in division?

From Colorado I'd take Newhook/2023 1st/Good bottom 6er or something along those lines

Newhook looks like the real deal, 23 draft looks deep, and a good bottom 6er would be a big boost

I was all for seeing how he performed under a new coach, but this interview really pissed me off. Such a sense of entitlement. I don't think this kind of attitude can be fixed and I think the vets (Wheeler and Stastny) have recognized their might be a problem with him. i think it's time to move on.

I honestly don't see much of a difference between what PLD said about being here in the future and what Scheifele said. Both said they want to see where and what the organization is going to do before they decide.

One big difference - PLD is unsigned. He is going into negotiations and is at a turning point in his career. Does he sign here long term, or does he aim for UFA? So comments like that from him are appropriate now. Scheifele is under contract for 2 more years. The comments are not appropriate at this time. They might be a year from now when he could be considering an extension, but not now.

Wow. Seems like 100% against 55 here. I for one like the comment and the pressure it puts on Chipman to make some actual moves this off season besides firing the coaches

It isn't just his words, in a vacuum. It is the tone and the context. The team underachieved this year, in a big way. Scheifele was the underachiever in chief.

Exactly this.

The Underachiever-in-Scheifele.

This team can no longer drive 55.

Time to move the Mark.

The big difference from the other leaders on this team (Dubois, Connor, Morrissey) is they talk in part of being part of the solution.

Mark speaks nothing like that. It’s as though he thinks the organization owes him something… or else.

Mark, we all want more, but we’ll only ever get it if you pull your head directly out of your ass and be apart of the solution rather than one of the teams problems.

This guys head seems so far in the sand.

Entitlement - pure and simple.

The plot thickens

We've been talking here about the possibility of moving on from Scheifele for weeks (months?). As a group, we seem to have sensed something even before the speculation started in the media or any comments from players, etc. We were getting the message from watching him, on and off the ice.

The conversation revolved around questions of whether we were in the position of having to trade him on one hand or wanting to on the other. I think now it is coalescing around needing to.

Unfortunately this may reduce the value of the return, but this is one place where Chevy's patience will payoff. Hold out until we get the right return.

To the bolded, I think if we were going to trade him today sure, but with 16 teams yet to be eliminated, there may be a team that has an early round exit that may be willing to part with the assets we would be looking for.

The East is an absolute bloodbath in the top 8 right now. I wouldn't be surprised to see one of those teams to pay out the nose to get a leg up.

Yea I was going to say I think we shouldn't be too quick to assume Wheeler feels like Scheif.

Carolina comes to mind for me if they stumble, possibly NYR as well
