Player Discussion: Mark S Discussion

In the post game interviews Wheeler comments about the line of him, Ehlers and Stast and says " our particular line combo, it was to little to late but it makes you wonder what could have been " Am I imagining things or is that a comment on playing( being glued to ) with Sheif.
Hmmmm, what line does that leave Scheifele on? 3rd? Not a centre? Did Wheeler think that far a head and fire a shot? Or was he just pumping Stastny's tires and not thinking of the line up?

If we can get a package that includes a 2nd line Center, and perhaps a speedy 3rd line Center plus draft picks we will be fine. As long as the whole coaching staff changes and they start putting lines together properly.

I don't think the package requirements need to be that specific. That still leaves our hole at 1RD. I would be happy to get a 1RD. That would leave us with a hole at top 6 C. We can hope that Perfetti can fill it or look elsewhere for that.

A complete change in the coaching style is a must though. Lowry and Huddy need to go, at least.

Likely just saying he enjoyed playing with those two and felt they had chemistry together. Ehlers and Laine both expressed a fondness of playing with Stastny in the past too because he handled the dirty work and let them play their skill games. He's a well liked teammate.

I think Scheifele is as good as gone and I feel it’s best for both parties.
I don’t think his attitude has anything to do with his contract at all.
I feel after the WCF season he stopped believing in this organization and it’s direction under management and coaching I really do.
Not much different than many of us here.
Mark is a special player and I think the frustration of being on an also ran club got to him big time.
This organization seems very timid in changing its direction even when it’s clear the current message and methods don’t work.

Like for the bolded part.

The rest? Maybe, maybe not, just like all of the other theories. Depression, contract envy, etc. are all possible as is simple frustration with lack of compete from the org. Maybe a little bit of all of the above.

What is clear, at least to me, is that this has been brewing for years. I blame Maurice for not holding players accountable. I also blame Chevy for allowing Maurice to continue that way far too long. And maybe we can also say that the org as a whole doesn't believe in itself enough to really compete.

After seeing Chefs exit interview, I have no doubt he does not want to be here, and has been mailing it in all year. Ship him out, buy out Wheeler, and make changes to the coaching staff.

Not sure why you would buy out Wheeler. He is far better off accommodating a trade. The Jets are far better off retaining salary, even a lot of salary, than they are buying him out - even if he is traded for free. He would not need to be traded for free. He scored 60 points in 65 games this year. He still has a lot of market value at a reduced cap hit.

I'd love to hear Stastny speak candidly on Scheifele. In particular, if he saw a difference in Scheifele as a person in between the 2018 playoffs and when he signed with us in 2020, like how the fans see a difference in his playstyle.

Were there signs of things to come back then? Or did Stastny come back to a completely different team in 2020?

We first saw this abrupt change in him after the playoffs in 2019 where he juat sat their in his exit interview just stewing and not saying anything. He hasn't been right since and earlier that year was when I first started hearing about him not being happy with his contract.

It might have just been talk, and total points wise there was no way he was going to replace 55, but Copp sounded like he wanted to stay here if he was given the chance and came across as someone willing to give blood for this team. So we let him go and we have a player like Scheifele to keep dealing with.

I’d be happy to get a 1RD as well. I’m just not sure who’s giving one up. I could see a team giving up a top 5 pick after the lottery in this draft so we could get a future one. Maybe Pulock if you feel he is one.

Good day all...

I had the pleasure of watching "Winnipeg Sports Talk" with Paterson and Remis from today...

Basically they tie together everything HFJets is yakking about today in multiple threads...

Primarily this one...

Mike McIntyre is the guest and I guess when Mike is out of the influence of the Free Press echo-chamber... it helps him pull things together...

One of the better shows they have put on with over 290 episodes....

Here is the link to the show:

PS... To all on HFJets... thank you for a great hockey season here on our board...
It was a very tough year... we talked hockey and possibilites when the Jets played well...
And We held no quarter when they didn't...
Many will be proved right for their perspective... some maybe not so much...
But it's the discourse that makes it interesting...
And We had a hell of a lot of fun... We didn't let the Jets bring us down...
Thanks to all... it was a lot of fun... thumbs up to HFJets... :thumbu:

Disappointed at Marks interview.
Sounds like he asking what the team can do for him rather than what he can do for the team
“What is the direction the team is going?”
WTF?
We max the cap space in the last offseason to acquire players make a run in the playoffs.
If Mark played to his potential Im sure we would be in the playoffs
After listening to his interview and watching his play this year I feel he’s a selfish player
Time to move on.

Wheeler has negative trade value. The Jets would have to give up a high draft pick or give away a roster player as well.

I wanted to keep Copp and opined months ago trading Scheifele for w top pairing RHD might be the way to go.

I'll predict that if he is traded, he goes to a team that gets eliminated in the playoffs in the first round and for a highly rated player that underperformed in those games.

I know that alot of people don't like +/- but Scheifele at -17 was the worst forward of all our forwards, you can't have that from a #1 center and expect to be a successful team. We looked our best when both Scheifele and Wheeler were on our 3rd line like alot of the good teams that's awesome depth but Maurice or Scheifele or Wheeler or all three couldn't leave it like that and here we are. Really hope our next coach is willing to do this if Scheifele is back and even if Scheifele isn't for that matter.

Solid post John and I second your emotions. I tend consider myself skeptically optimistic. The episode you shared was Cathartic for me. For those of you like me who didn’t get a chance to watch the post season interviews this is a golden episode. You only need to watch Schif then a real leader in Paul Stastny to see what was glaringly wrong all season. Obviously Mark has wanted out for a while and the players need to see that happen. The organization is at a cross roads now and we’ll soon find out if Chipman is in way over his head as the owner or if Chevy can right the ship. In the past this org has waited for things to fester and implode before doing the right think (Kane, Laine, Scheifele, Maurice, and Trouba to a lesser extent) and although Chevy has done well with a gun to his head up to this point there is cost to dithering and it came home to roost in this lost season.

Not that I think he will say anything about it but I hope that Chevy sheds some clarity on what's going on with the locker room. Fans have written their own storylines which may or maynot be true, some clarity would be appreciated.

What I want from Kevin is not words but actions. Hire the right coaching staff, get the proper value back for Mark when he trades him this off season, and lets move forward.

The Schiefele era ended ”during” the weekend at Bernie’s season that just finished with a 15 car pile up In the post season interviews.

Playing devils advocate here... Aside from tone, what's so different between what Scheif is saying and what is being reported that Dubois is saying? Need to think about it, what's the direction of the team, need to speak with my agent and my family, etc.
Believe me, I'm not impressed with 55's end of season presser, but I think this has been stewing for a while and the lid as blown and with it, everything is being blown out of proportion, which also makes any kind of reconciliation (Jet's aren't getting viable offers that are worth it to move him) that much more difficult.
