i mean if we are winning the lottery, finding a 3c, two matchup D, and clearing cap at no cost - these guys are geniuses and this will definitely be a justifiable move

but again - i point to us having the 99th percentile of best possible outcomes with the JTM trade and it doing absolutely f*** all for us. Zero. We have still been shit his entire time here.

smartest guys in the room syndrome

of course they can thread the needle and come out of this on the other side with a competitive team. just ignore last offseason. they were uhhhh warming up. yeah that's it

I won't be spending on another cent on this team.

Let's get real here. Unless we get new owners, there's no hope for this team to ever win the CUP. I have become emotionally apathetic over the years so I don't get "hurt" by the stupid decisions made by this team's management and owner. However, yesterday's trade still "broke" me. It's like finally seeing a glimmer of hope, have it taken away, and then finding out you are in for more torment.

It's just not worth it with the existing owners here.

Relocation is becoming one of my preferred outcomes. Not sure how else we can get rid of this guy.

the canucks are facing the following realities that impact their ability to field a retool roster next year.

-unless oel goes on perpetual ltir or bounces back his cap hit is dead cap. a buyout does nothing. he is not tradeable. this is not current management's fault but it is a reality that should drive their thinking.

-myers can use his ntc to prevent a trade to any team willing and able to take on his cap even after his signing bonus is paid. to me it is doubtful he can be moved at 50% retention plus a 2nd next summer. a buyout does nothing. management could have moved him more cheaply at the last tdl and did not. now they are stuck with him.

-boeser is untradeable without significant retention. despite wanting to be traded he is garbage on the ice unable to seize his own destiny. the pens just chose to acquire a washed up burnt out granlund rather than take him on. the decision to extend him last summer for two years was a bad gamble. even a one year qo would have been better.

-every effort they have made to move jt miller over two seasons has failed. he's a good player with a personality other teams do not want on their roster. the decision to extend him last summer was inexplicably bad.

-three of these problems are self induced by this management group and/or their inability to stop the owner interfering.

despite failing to fix any of these problems they just went ahead and made an expensive dubious retool move at the tdl and took on more cap. leaving aside the timing, that move is another big gamble on the player and it also plays into a two year window that does not exist unless they solve these problems.

unless they can fix at least one of these problems this tdl, i think we should close the book on these guys. they are either hopelessly under the thumb of aquaman or crazy gamblers or both. they have made more major mistakes than benning did out of the gate and their strategy is less realistic. they are approaching two years without having implemented even a halfassed retool. it is a complete train wreck. at this stage if it turned out jr took the job to torture aquaman and kill the franchise i would not be shocked. if pettersson does not extend this summer they will have burned us to the ground.

And I'd add one more thing: they also have the lovely habit of talking like they're big shots, with next to nothing to back it up.

Like JEB, these two f***ing morons do not know how to deal with PR. They consistently talk like they got this, they got EVERYTHING figured out and the whole league is at their mercy, then...cricket, breeze, and tumbleweed.

And yep, the way things are done so far, also shows strong hints of a little bitch ass owner sticking his blueberry-covered fingers everywhere.

Lets recap everything in one trade-overview

that is a totally incoherent return on those investments. i can't even process it.

my view is all the trades are fine for value except that hronek should be a late 1st and a high second plus maybe a 3rd. we gave away a lot giving them the isles pick.

I never made it around here yesterday but, man... there are some very stupid people online, I don't know what to say. Had to rant a bit.

This rant was originally also going to address the absurdity of "Draft picks mostly don't turn out, so it's good to trade them", "Aquilini wants to win a Cup for his Dad, so he needs the team to compete now" and "The Sedins Petey/Hughes won't suffer a rebuild so we need to be mediocre in the present."

NONE of these should have people making these arguments in 2023. Not functional adults, anyway.

Yeah that's just it. We've been taking short cuts for a decade now. First to build the prospect pool by adding older prospects, then to build around the new core, then just to get the team back to the playoffs to save jobs. All while getting all the losing that we were told this would avoid, without the benefits of a rebuild. While teams that were at the bottom with us are coming out of the rebuild in a much better position. This is so much more than fans being upset about overpaying for Hronek. Finally when it looked like we were heading into a draft that is deep with a surplus in the first 2 rounds, the rug gets swept under us for more short cuts. Fans have every right to be upset. It's not that Hronek is a bad player or anything, It's that he's a piece that will maybe push us into a wild card spot instead of a piece that would help us become a contender if we had had just not taken short cuts for the last 10 year.

Same crap different pile.

Until people stop showing up and sponsors start pulling out, nothing will change.

Asshat at the top hires asshats in the middle to acquire mediocre players to “try” and make the playoffs every year.

As a fan, it’s disheartening and will now only lead to frustration, anger and very soon (if not already) complete apathy.

I was starting to tune out, got pulled back in with the Horvat deal and now beyond checked out.

You just expect the worst because that’s what the reality is.

Which is f***ing embarrassing when most posters on here could do a better job.

So f*** it. I really hope they fall flat on their face and just continue to be non existent.

I’ll just watch from a far and enjoy other teams play.

Least as a neutral, the East playoffs this year will be amazing.

LOL.

Go take a walk outside bro.

Nobody knows how this roster is going to be come the start of next year.

We might see multiple high impact trades in less than 48 hours. I'd say take a step back and just chill. If the roster is absolute ass heading into next year, I think you have reason to complain. Until then, I would sit tight and just wait.
This line of thinking is so aspirational to me. I would love to live in a world where no one should ever be held to any standard, where expecting competence and planning is unfair, where no criticism is ever valid due to the ability to point to a completely hypothetical future move as "possible", so that I could keep my completely smooth brain in a jar beside me while I cheer on my Canucks.

Unfortunately my inherent expectations are that this management team that is being paid millions of dollars should be really good at their jobs, and therefore should be able to both chart and explain a plausible path to a bright future. Right now, this continues to not be the case for the 9th season in a row, with zero reasonable hope for improvement in the near future based upon the facts that have been laid bare. Basing making shortcuts on "we need to keep our stars happyyy" is a stupid cop-out to remove any responsibility to make hard decisions for the good of the team. Just can't imagine treating highly-paid professionals with kid gloves to this degree, especially in a 32-team closed system, wherein there are literally dozens or hundreds of possible other people who are smarter with better ideas on how to run teams. Baffling

Still being punished for 2011 by the hockey gods
Punished by ownership*

FAQ tasted victory and tasted what was almost adoration from Vancouver fans for nearly bringing the city a cup in 2011.

Losing that series damaged his ego deeply and the meddling began immediately in the off-season. We've seen the results of the team's direction since then.

He has stated that winning a cup for his Dad before he passes is his ultimate goal.

The ironic thing is that his rushed retool meddling has actually delayed what could have been a proper rebuild this entire time.

Truly a decade of darkness from 2013-2023. I really wish we could have seen what Gillis would've done with a scorched-earth rebuild.

hughes just said "we don't want to be here for a rebuild and have to wait" lmao

Rebuild boys in shambles.

This was obvious since day one. Our superstars are entering their prime.

Trading draft picks to capitalize on this 4-5 year window for YOUNG quality roster players is completely acceptable.

Can I ask how you anticipate this team becoming a contender? Don't even need specific players etc, just a rough sketch of the moves that you expect them to make to turn this team into a team with a shot at winning. Interested in understanding if you have any expectations or are just assuming that crossing your fingers and toes will lead to sustained success
