It's hard to find a comparable for the Canucks. We like to think that we have not rebuilt here, but from 2013 to 2019 we have drafted in the top 10 in 6 out of those 7 years and do have Petey, Hughes, and Demko. It's not unreasonable to trade a future 1st for Miller in summer of 2019 the way the Canucks did.
Where the Canucks are now is different though. We have a high 2023 1st round pick coming but the "core" we are relying on are now fully developed and in their primes. Clearly management thinks the pieces are there. We just need a better supporting cast.
