Management Thread | Who needs draft picks Edition

Players need to stay in their lane and do their job.

If Petey and Hughes are meddling and their opinions are actually changing the outlook for the team, then get rid of them. They have been losers their entire NHL careers up to this point.

i think you can count on the fact the team cannot do a full rebuild and expect to extend petey. there is no realistic option on that.

so the price to rebuild is at least petey, and most likely hughes too.

i had thought they were walking a tight line doing a light retool bringing in a bunch of very talented underperformers and letting pettersson and hughes have at them.

but i cannot imagine being so far down the road with appeasing petey that trading jt miller without infilling a replacement centre right away would be too risk.. that would suggest he's got at least one foot out the door.

the best case scenario right now if the rumour is true is that jt miller is more important to the team than we ever dreamed. maybe he's really the glue guy holding this band of brothers together.

Miller is turning 30 and will be providing diminishing returns on an 8 million dollar contract for a non-playoff team.

Not moving him will likely be looked at as a mistake as soon as next season.

To get off of Miller's contract, theyd should be willing to take a lot less than the rumoured offer.

But, since they seem to have an organization-wide blindness to where they are in their competitive cycle, they will probably keep him.
We are in no position to take cap back, and that’s likely what stands in the way of a Miller or a Boeser trade

Too many bodies.. need to make more trades like the Lazar trade and get draft picks and cap space.

Kuzmenko-EP-Mikehev
Beavillier-Miller-Boeser
Garland-Aman- Podkolzin
Pearson-Dries-Joshua
Hoglander/Studnika/Kravatsov/Raty

Hughes-Hronek
OEL-Bear
Dermott-Myers
Rathbone/Juulsen/Wolanin/Brisebois

none of these players should be on the roster next year. podkolzin, kravtsov, aman, wolanin and hoglander are all pretty borderline too and need to earn a spot in the last 20 games here/training camp

(it goes without saying oel shouldn't be on the roster, but he will be)

Why the heck didn’t they unload Miller?? They said they need a centre? Miller is a good winger but a terrible centre.

Yeah...
It was a facepalm moment when I read the report.
This was the last chance to get something of value for Miller...
Before his albatross contract kicks in...
And the team passed.

This organization is just a giant tire fire.
Everyone should jump ship when he or she can.

Sure we need players that can play NOW, but the HIGH Draft Picks are meant for the future of the organization! you're going to need both!!

The only high draft pick we acquired, we traded away....with our own 2nd as well!! WTF!

It is absolutely hilarious that we have almost 4m dead cap (buyouts+retention) dropping off this summer and are already at the salary cap for next year.

While 6th last in the league. Buyers at the deadline anyways. Net negative on picks at the upcoming draft.

Well that's it. Trading for Hronek and not trading Miller lock this team into "be competitive now" mode rather than build the future mode. If ever there was any doubt about whether this team could be future oriented, we have our answer.

And for those who say they need to build around EP and QH because they won't stay for a rebuild this is the thing, this team is not yet close to being competitive. Adding Hronek and losing Horvat isn't going to all of a sudden make this team a contender.

So, we have a choice between two options as I see it: 1. stop following the team/become disinterested, or 2. embrace the win now mentality.

For those who choose 2, I hope you appreciate that this management is now under pressure to do some serious constructing around QH and EP to build a team that is actually competitive. And I hope that all of the unknowns, Kravtsov, Raty, Podkolzin, EP2, turn into legit NHLers closer to their upside than their downside. Because all of this has to happen.

I have yet to decide whether I'm choosing 1 or 2. But I am guarded by what we've witnessed over and over again, hope is not a plan.

So, this team could have gotten assets for Miller and possibly go into this draft with 3 1sts.

Instead, we decide to keep Miller and trade a 1st and our high 2nd for a band aid fix..

Why is anyone still supporting this team at this point? Is it even worth all the agony and mental anguish?

Even under the most optimistic projections under option 2 for those players, do you see this team compare favorably against Carolina or Boston?

Let's face it here. This team is not built to win the cup. All it cares about is making the playoffs even if they get blown out in the first round.

No I don't. They need to add two top four defensive defense men, a legit 3C, a solid backup, and a high end 2C within one to two years as MIller gets older. And they need to do that without having draft capital or strong prospect assets. In otherwords, they need to get extremely lucky with the development of players in their system or in adding college FAs as NY did with Fox.

So being that the team's intent is clearly to "win now", trying to augment a Petey / Hughes core - what likely happens? They're going to have to make a bunch of moves in a hurry. I imagine OEL gets bought out and guess Myers gets traded w/ retention after his bonus is paid. Pearson and Boeser are probably on the block too for whatever we can get for them. Maybe we're saving our retention slots for off-season moves.

they have no choice but to clear salary somehow:

brock boeser$6,650,000
connor garland$4,950,000
oel$7,260,000
jt miller$8,000,000
tucker poolman$2,500,000
tanner pearson$3,250,000
ilya mikheyev$4,750,000
tyler myers$6,000,000
elias pettersson$7,350,000
quinn hughes$7,850,000
andrei kuzmenko$5,500,000
anthony beauvillier$4,150,000
filip hronek$4,400,000
dakota joshua$825,000
thatcher demko$5,000,000

78.4m committed. about 5m in space with only 15 players on the roster and ignoring bonus carryover (probably about a mil between kuzmenko and aman). 8 league min salaries is about 4m so there's the cap and bear is left out in the cold

they can probably count on one of pearson or poolman being on ltir which gives them enough to sign bear and maybe give hoglander or kravtsov a raise

myers can't get bought out because it actually saves you less than waiving him and sending him to abby. boeser and garland can but there's some ugly penalties. an oel buyout has structural issues because it only really saves you money in years one and two

next summer is when it gets really bad. pettersson, hronek and beauvillier all have to share myers and pearson's money

Jeez... Jim Benning is such a bitch for trading for OEL and prioritizing Pearson instead of getting Petey on a long term contract (among all the other disastrous deals he made).

Boeser, Myers, Pearson, and Poolman all have to go. Poolman probably LTIR. OEL the Canucks are stuck with until he LTIRetires

I’m relaxing a bit on the new management, I don’t agree with everything they’ve done or the direction but they have done some great things. I really like Krav deal, Kuz has been amazing… not a huge fan of the Hronek trade but I get it. Beau has been amazing here. You can get a glimpse of what they’re doing and I’m willing to see if they can pull it off. They still got a lot of work to do because we need to move on from Garland, Boeser and Myers to use that space to improve the blue line. I do want to watch a winning team so I hope they can pull it off. Feel better about them than I did after the summer.

This can't be real. "Allvin: I'm not collecting picks just to collect picks. Mentions he either collects them to draft hockey players or trade them." This is one of the dumbest things I have ever heard from a professional sports team front office member.
It is real..the team is retooling..not rebuilding.
