Management Discussion | Pre-Season Approaching

Oh gawd I never loved Benning...........I preached patience for the first several years........just like I am here. Eventually I clued in that Jimbo needed to wear velcro shoes and adjusted my attitude as such. Probably a good season too late but yeah it became pretty clear to me that Dim Jim was fully unqualified for the job. If it makes you feel better to think otherwise feel free........I'm have about as much interest in correcting u as I do in knowing the price of tea in China right now.

People on this board expecting current management go from a fat overweight and broke 30 year old into a stacked wealthy in shape stud overnight..........that's not gonna happen as the sins of Jimbo are not gonna be erased overnight.

For the most part I think management has done a decent job - other than re-signing Boeser (which would have been an incredibly tough decision but the right one to let him walk) and not saving that cap for a d man they've been fine.

Yes you can see from 4 solar systems away we need a massive upgrade on our D - sooner or later that will happen. .............Until then I'm gonna do the same thing as I've done - preach patience. Rome wasn't built in a day and neither will this hockey club.

So we should have done what? Our team - despite your assertations - was never in a position to rebuild. We have too many high quality assets to do so.

If we don't fix the d at some point then yeah this management has failed.........until then I'm in wait and see mode and not rush to indict mode........
People don’t forget!

I also don’t believe you’re accurately depicting what expectations are re: your spiel about fat 30 year olds.

Anywho….
The current cup champions rebuilt with Nathan Mackinnon in the age range that Petey and Q are in now. Just sayin’

Sure it’s a rarity but sometimes it’s necessary.

Friedman on D&D said a few things re: Doerrie that caught my attention:

1.) Said there are three different narratives, so that does sound like people involved are putting specific things out, as opposed to a complete silence.

2.) People are using the term "dismissed by the Canucks" without anyone blinking or challenging, so I guess the idea that this might have been mutual or her quitting is out.

3.) Regardless of which angle is to be believed, he said it's clear there was a "rift" that developed recently, and that depending on which of the stories you believe, someone will come out looking bad, so there doesn't seem to be any room for this to be a "it's all friendly, just didn't work out" option.

I just listened to that and thought there was a pretty clear undertone about Doerrie leaking things to the press. That’s not a particularly scandalous story, and somewhat hilarious given how leaky the Canucks have been to the media in recent years.

I just don't see how a rebuild was on the table.......and as a long suffering fan I prefer to have some actual optimism about this group.

If people want to bask in the gloom and doom go for it........I won't be joining them but I get it's easy to be pessimistic considering our history.....

Our new management's performance felt a bit underwhelming, or maybe my expectations are too high when I thought they could clean up JEB's pile of monkey diarrhea in one off season.

Our pre-season games have not instill me with much confidence, I guess I shouldn't be surprised. Let's see if our boys can actually amp it up when the chips are down.

Yeah people here throwing themselves off bridges here and we haven't played one minute of meaningful hockey yet.........

I think everyone got duped by the media constantly telling us BIG CHANGES ARE IN STORE - big changes which never materialized and as a result everyone is having sentiments similar to yours.

Preseason is just that.........preseason. 20 games in if we look like ass still THEN it's time to hit the panic button.

At the same time I also understand people's pessimism, as pre-season is basically the same crap we've been seeing for almost a decade and...yeah. One of the patients (quadriplegic but a super cool guy) who watched the last pre-season game said he'd thrown something at the TV if he still had use for his hands, I said well I can help you with that, and chucked a paper cup at the screen, he laughed pretty hard and thanked for me for the help.

I guess our regime did an OK job this summer? But the hole JEB left is so astronomically deep, 6 feet of dirt thrown into it barely makes the bottom even visible from the surface.

I too bought into the expectations for big changes, but I had a longer timeline that I'd settled in for, the mess Benning left combined with the state of the league's cap situation left me prepared for it to be a full season before they'd be able to properly put their stamp on things, and a total of two or three seasons before they'd remake the team. Not even a complete rebuild, just shuffling out (most of) the anchors and putting in place the right pieces for balance.

So as much as I was disappointed / surprised on the Miller front (not being able to trade him for a RHD), aside from that I honestly didn't expect too much would be possible. Sure, re-signings would happen (Boeser was okay but not great, but also about what you could expect), Kuzmenko was a nice win, Mikheyev I'm on the fence with, but the rest? About what I expected, which was not much, not because I think management is passive or content with the team but just that there's an ugly reality that we might have to wait for some dead weight contracts to expire and sometimes you just have to wait for circumstances to develop for the right trade opportunity to happen. Good managers can sometimes "make something happen", but sometimes good management is about being patient, waiting for the right pitch and making sure that when it comes you're prepared (which is why the lack of cap space is the one thing that makes me nervous, and why I feel Mikheyev may have unnecessarily handcuffed us).

But overall, on balance I think they've made more good decisions than bad, in fact I can't really point to anything that is a hands down bad decision (unlike Benning when most of his decisions seemed obviously terrible), they just haven't made any dramatic moves. I think they'll come, but I'm prepared for that to take a while.

If I had to quantify it, I'd say they're 30% done on whatever to-do list they have.

You think that, even with Miller's new contract, this MIGHT be a stealth tank year? Since they didn't/couldn't shore up our blueline?

One can only hope huh...

This team needs a TON of work to compete.

This management has not started that work. That is all I expected. The plan is the same as Bennings so far.

How did you get that? He specifically said he absolutely does not think it had anything to do with the leaked mikheyev injury story.

He brought it up completely unprompted out of basically nowhere. I'm not saying it's the truth, but it's obviously getting a lot of run if he's randomly mentioning it after he's basically asked simply: "What do you know about this situation."

While he did bring it up out of nowhere, he did specify that it wasn't what happened. Before he said this I was actually thinking it was the probable reason for her dismissal, now I have no idea. The information we have received on this has me asking way more questions. I do really wish we had more clarification.

I certainly don’t want to bask in doom and gloom and frankly you making that claim when realistic viewpoints aren’t positive enough is aggravating.

Same with comparing those critical of what’s gone on as “throwing themselves off bridges”.

It’s super douchey. Especially since those who choose to neglect reality In the name of being positive….you just did that for nearly bennings entire tenure.

To be fair i dont think he made that claim.. and you did the same to me about my viewpoint

Absence of negativity does not prove an optimistic outlook.. nor does remaining neutral on several of the topics here - none of which i see are being argued for the positive outcome

Yeah I'm not gonna apologize for attempting to have some optimism or patience. You might wanna try that some time (I get misery is comforting). I choose optimism and patience you choose the bridge - to each their own...........

Yeah I was Benning Bro #1 and now that he's gone I'm attempting to pretend I wasn't..........totally.........you got me there.

Again I’m not asking you to apologize for your feelings. I’m calling out your behaviour.

You keep calling those who aren’t blindly optimistic as miserable and doom and gloom, it’s lazy but it probably makes you feel better.

I’m glad you can be optimistic. You were optimistic when Beagle signed too.

“If people want to bask in doom and gloom…” in a response to my post is imo making that claim.

Also referencing those critical as throwing themselves off bridges Is pretty gloomy.

Not sure about the rest of this, I don’t know specifically what youre taking about.

Jay's mom herself wouldn't have been optimistic. Another Benning special.

Potato - potatoe

Feel free to dig up where i was optimistic when Beagle signed? That was an assinine signing from minute one. Benning never was able to walk away from something he had his sites on - that 4th year was completely unnecessary and we had ZERO need for a 4th line player to be paid that much. Funny u mention as the Beagle signing is probably one of the things I'm most pissed about from Bennings tenure (but hey let's not let the facts get in the way of a good story now right).

And just fyi you don't sound glad........most bitterish but I get things get misinterpreted by text........

If the team gets off to a slow start things will get ugly pretty quickly for this management group.

Yeah rough crowd around here..........
