Marner is 0 goals for 18 games, that’s three years in a row.
AM had not been great for two years too. His defence is good but not dominating and he needs to score.

Understood, but you were talking about the Dubas being better at filling out the bottom 6.

You make a lot of sense, and many good points. I just don't understand why Dubas hasn't already entertained these ideas.

You're offering this for free, but he's being paid for this.

It might just so be that Marner gets moved to acquire all the surrounding pieces for depth.

I just think Dubas is married to this group. He will die using the horses he rode with.

The first sign will be Keefe. If he's not fired then I don't know what to make of Dubas' attitude and willingness to admit that his design is flawed.
Very true. It all ends up on Shanny’s lap.
He let Mark Hunter and Lou Lam go and it’s been downhill ever since.
You cut Shanny loose and bring in a new management group to get this franchise back on track, especially when the M & M’s will most likely be gone in 3 years.
They can’t trust Shanahan to rebuild our team again.

Hopefully Dubas/Shanny are currently privately entertaining the idea. If they come back with this core and they don't make it deep in the playoffs they're almost certain to be canned with the # 1 reason being the loyalty to M & M who royally bent them over in contract negotiations.

Seeing Dubas really evolve in his philosphy after last playoffs and try to get bigger, tougher, better defensively is the only thing that gives me any hope he'll change course with the core and deal one of them (who should be Marner).

Yes, but add leadership, culture and accountability to the top of the list.

I completely agree and just another reason to deal Marner.

The three hipsters all play a soft brand of hockey. Nylander I'll never be a big fan of cause he bails out on so many hits but this playoffs he proved that he has finally figured out how to succeed in the playoffs by driving the net with speed and determination.

Also by avoiding Trinity Bellwoods Park.

;)

Marner and a number one for either Tkachuk.

Rielly for Tom Wilson.

Now who wants to play us in the playoffs?

I think it is easier to fill bottom 6 given the Cap restraint. Like what can you go wrong with a 850k/yr player and the realistic expectations of someone making the league min.
An example would be Bogo, he might be underpaid by 300k but you are never going to expect Bogo to be your Top pairing Dman and leading the defence.

Shanny is great at tanking ;)

This year was going to be the indictator as to whether this team can do it or not. They failed in spectacular fashion.

All during the season hockey fans were chirping, "we are just waiting for the annual Leafs collapse". Sure enough, one for the ages.

I gave them this year, I applauded some of the moves, I'm now of the opinion that certain players don't have it in them. They aren't Gamers who can win in the NHL. The comparisons to some of the other franchises who won many rounds but didn't get over the hump for awhile are unfair at this point. This team hasn't won a round...in 17 years.

The comparisons to T.B, Washington and others is not legitimate. It's a grossly inaccurate comparison. They are going to live and die with certain players, and it's simply not going to happen. At best they squeak past a weak team for a round? Visions of a Cup with this core should be put to rest. Sorry, if anyone is a "data guy", that is where the data points based on the unprecedented failure in the first rounds.

My only hope is that Matthews is locked up long term and when the inevitable re-tooling occurs, probably with new management. He is a part of the future. He at least plays two ways and throws his body once in awhile so when he isn't scoring, he is involved. The year end Q&A from Thornton is a message to fans and the Leaf ownership, "Matthews is the real deal, lock him up and build the team around him with Gamers".

They should trade Marner for 1 year of Seth Jones. If we can resign him great if not oh well at least it fixes the pay scale of our roster.

And left trying to find a setup man like Mitch Marner for Matthews.

No major trades coming.

Anyone knows if Matthes is as thick with GM as Marner?

We have three years, at this point it's 50-50. #34 might as well gather few personal accolades before joining someone for the Cup run.

If he resigns, great, if he won't , can we afford letting him go to UFA with no assets recouped ?

What would that mean come year 4 ? Another rebuild? Build around Tavares on the one his contract?

Any team that has $11.6 million to spend all of a sudden is not "without assets." You're also going to be hard pressed to find an NHL team that can clear that much cap overnight to sign one player.

Waive Tavares ???????

I personally wouldn't be opposed to waiving Tavares. He's not worth his contract. Get him and Marner out ASAP

I hope Matthews plays his whole career here, but if he leaves, it is immediately before McDavid could re up in Edmonton, and the countdown will be on.

I think you give Tavares 1 more season and then tell him he has to waive his NMC or he is going to sit in the stands as a scratch until he agrees. When we signed him to that deal...it was based on him performing at that level. He has never in my opinion done that...not even once. We didn't pay 11M for a guy to put up just barely a point per game..we paid him to lead us where we hadn't been before. We gave him the C and he has stunk in every single playoff series he played...bar none.

He didn't hold the team hostage like Marner did to get the deal...but he still needs to be better or else GTFO. He will age badly...can hardly skate now at 30...imagine him at 33 or 34. He will need a wheel chair to get down the ice.....not a fan of him at all.
Yeah, that's not happening.

Would you trade Sid for Marner straight up?
Won’t that be an interesting trade.
Pens gets to retool and build around Marner while still have Malkin and Letang.
Leafs gets Sid and allow him to mentor AM and Willie the right way.

I think Leafs and Oilers will strike a deal for McDavid if Oilers know he is not going to resign.

The only chance is in free agency

What assets do the leafs have that are worth mcdavid? Think about it

Matthews: he's basically one foot out the door already to AZ and has less term

Marner: no and less term

Riley; 1 year

We have no picks

Why would the Oilers trade the best player in hockey for anyone with less term who are worse and obviously won't sign in Edm?

The fans would burn the city down.

It's the equivalent of saying like let's trade Matthews to the Preds.Because he seems to be headed to AZ

What assets could the preds even come up with that we'd think is worth it.

As good as Matthews is he's not close to Mcdavid. And he's never resigning there with two years less on his contract.

We are talking about 4 yrs from now. Maybe AM will resign by then after winning the Cup. A Marner trade that free up cap space for pure future ended up getting Leafs Point, Mack and Hedman 2.0. A lot can happen in 4 yrs.

You have a link for that Thornton quote?

Matthews has never won a series in his life as far as I know. He is not a gamer.

Just stop with this AZ stuff.

the Coyotes can't even pay the phone bill let alone afford Auston Matthews.

I unfortunately agree with you. Matthews seems to get a pass but he is just as much of a problem as Marner. The laughing as he gets ragdolled or laughing at the media when questioned says it all. It's a job for him, nothing more.
