This year was going to be the indictator as to whether this team can do it or not. They failed in spectacular fashion.
All during the season hockey fans were chirping, "we are just waiting for the annual Leafs collapse". Sure enough, one for the ages.
I gave them this year, I applauded some of the moves, I'm now of the opinion that certain players don't have it in them. They aren't Gamers who can win in the NHL. The comparisons to some of the other franchises who won many rounds but didn't get over the hump for awhile are unfair at this point. This team hasn't won a round...in 17 years.
The comparisons to T.B, Washington and others is not legitimate. It's a grossly inaccurate comparison. They are going to live and die with certain players, and it's simply not going to happen. At best they squeak past a weak team for a round? Visions of a Cup with this core should be put to rest. Sorry, if anyone is a "data guy", that is where the data points based on the unprecedented failure in the first rounds.
My only hope is that Matthews is locked up long term and when the inevitable re-tooling occurs, probably with new management. He is a part of the future. He at least plays two ways and throws his body once in awhile so when he isn't scoring, he is involved. The year end Q&A from Thornton is a message to fans and the Leaf ownership, "Matthews is the real deal, lock him up and build the team around him with Gamers".
