Laine has definitely lost some of the fire he had in Liiga finals. He's shying away from board battles and looking very tentative at times. That game against Hungary was the first time i've been a bit frustrated with him.

Doesn't have the same kind of confidence in his shot either. Sure he's scored some PP goals in this tournament, but he's had numerous chances 5 on 5 that he normally capitalizes on or at least hits the crossbar/post.

It's been a long season and for a kid that's taken huge leaps during the season, i think all of this is understandable. I wouldn't be surprised if he just can't regain that same magic against tougher teams going forward, considering all the pressure and expectations from the media.

But then again, it's Patrik Laine after all. He likes to prove people wrong and maybe he does it one more time in this tournament, scoring a GWG in an elimination game or something along those lines.

He already have most points as a u18 player in the history of WC, broke a record that Jaroslav drobny have had since the 1938-1939 season. He just didnt hit the shots today, ovechkin has those days to. I think he played with alot more confindence then the game against usa. I do not really understand what you have to be mad about, a normal day he would have scored maybe 3 goals from those chances but everyone have days that the shots just wont go in. And lets say its a good thing that was today.

Just look at this and stop expecting him to be the best player in the tournament every game xD

He's just pointing out an observation.

Name me the last time a top talent played in at 18? Considering neither Eichel or Matthews are both late birthdays. Canada never sends there top 18 year olds, so that eliminates the top pick most years. Its impressive, but not as amazing as it looks on paper.

Well he already tied Eichel in points so I guess it's back to amazing on paper

Its good, but its pretty crazy to ignore the fact top prospects rarely play in this tourny. And Eichel's linemates didn't include a legitimate nhl star in Barkov.

Matthews has 4 pts, could easily see him cutting into the point lead in a big way with the upcoming easy matchups (if they go to form). If he gets more than 7 points is he better than Eichel?:sarcasm: Pretty odd record given that so few guys even get to swing at it....(for various reasons alluded to in this thread)

None of the legitimate nhl stars in this tournament are scoring like Laine is

Mcdavid got 0+4, but he no doubt will score lot more. There are numbers for about every prospect year after draft: crosby, stamkos, tavares etc. Anyhow for players that are more comparable to Matthews.

Barkov very likely would have played at 18, if he hadn't been injured in the second game playing as the 1C in Sochi Olympics. It may mostly be a Finland thing to give these spots to exceptionally talented 18 y.o.s, but do note that all the NHL players in the team have played the same games and still they're not the ones leading the tourney in points. Well, except for Granlund, though he's with fewer goals.

Lets see him get a point vs a competitive team before we start comparing him to Jagr. So far the best team he's played had 3 nhlers, two of which are bottom pairing guys.

Did Jagr get his all five point against Canada or what are you inuating?

I'm expecting Canada & Sweden to make him invisible, he's not going to do miracles against some of the best D in the NHL. Well not yet. Give it a few years..

What I wouldn't give for Finland to have a few capable bottom pairing NHL Ds though. Would be easier for Laine to score some of those higly sought after ES goals if there was a guy in the backend who knew how to move the puck

I'm insinuating is that the 18 year old point record at the WHC doesn't matter and isn't a big deal. Considering almost no draft prospects play there, Canada never sends them (Ryan Murray is the only one I can think of), so we have a very limited pool to compare it against.

Right now Sweet Lou and Mark Hunter are watching and re-watching every game and have come to the same conclusion 90% of the regulars on HF have come to;Laine is simply superior to Matthews.

Sweet Lou won three Stanley Cups without a franchise center and will always draft the BPA.

Matthews is already on his way to Winnipeg to be reunited with his old pal Jask Roslovic.

Can we compare his 4+3 after four games to the overall statistics of the IIHF tourney of 2015? He's 0+3 behind Sidney Crosby at this point.

How about the under 19 where he is top 10 all time then? How about the under 20 where he is top 50 (43rd) all time, with the least games played in the top 100?

Ya, cause Canada was deep enough they decided to split up their powerplay minutes. What Laine's doing is impressive, but lets see him put up points vs a good team, which he hasn't yet. He didn't even get a point vs a very average USA team.

Leaf fans please chill out! You are 99,9% sure drafting Matthews why are you going against Laine so bad?

I guess we'll see who's going to be better in a few years.

That by itself should tell us how rare talents these guys are. Usually kids don't get to go to this tournament, and it's not because teams have a policy against it (ex Canada). I mean, maybe Matthews is the best prospect since Crosby since McDavid  and maybe Laine is whatever, Selänne.

Tbh, I didn't expect either to score too many points here. I had to readjust my expectations after the first few games.

You are talking about a guy who's just turned 18, you understand that right?

Talking about one game and with such high standards is quite absurd.

I really hope leafs draft Matthews.

Hockey Canada, is never going to take a kid from his CHL team mid-playoffs, which is why they weren't sent. McDavid last year wasn't taken because he was in the OHL final last year, Mackinnon was in the memorial cup and so on. That is the main reason CHL guys are never sent, and why Ryan Murray got sent because his team was knocked out by then. The schedules do not align for it.

What I'm saying is slow down the hype train, he's racking up points vs the weakest teams in the tourny. I've never said anything about Matthews. I think Laine's a great prospect, but the hype around the Jagr record is ridiculous when the #1 overalls are never sent usually, because they are still actively competing in another league.

Edit: Like his most recent competition for the record is Kevin Fiala. And Jagr's tourny had only two bottom feeders in Norway and West Germany. Outside of that it was Canada, Sweden, Soviets, Finland and USA.

Right. So excluding CHL players, every other prospect has had a legitimate shot of making it and very few do. A good number of recent 1OAs probably would've made it, but I don't think guys like Strome, Reinhart, Bennett, Huberdeau, Drouin, Galchenyuk would've made it.

Again, it's special. And it is the highest level of hockey we've seen Laine and Matthews ever play, so it's quite interesting.

e. stop trying to slow down our hype train, you

And there has been how many top forward prospects drafted high in the top 3 in the last decade? Its basically Eichel, Barkov, JVR, Turris (wouldn't of made it but would be in JR A playoffs most likely), and Toews. That isn't really a large sample to go from, and none went 1 OA.

On one hand you will say what Laine is doing is not impressive for an 18 year old, then in the Marner thread its a totally different story over there, comparing him to Pat Kane. Laine is going to be the best player in this draft. This kid has excelled at every level he has been in. He dominated the World Juniors, now he is looking good at this tourney. You can say all you want its against weak competition or because he plays with an NHL Center. There is an excuse for everything since you are not going to take him I guess.
