USNTDP has grown so much in reputation over the past 15 years due to guys like Matthews, Eichel, P. Kane, etc. That almost no top American will turn down a spot there. Like the biggest in recent years to turn it down was either Stranges (and he got drafted to one of the few teams in the CHL that can sell these kids on coming), and Musty. Even for ones who don't make the USNTDP, USHL has grown sizably in recognition. This kid is also from a college hockey hotbed. The Minnesota and New England kids rarely come to the CHL.
Mittelstadt.

I can't even remember if CM was invited... He would have been coming off his 9th grade year playing bantams and he was starting to get some buzz but really burst onto the scene early fall of 10th grade.

It might not of been in gr.9, but it was certainly in the news that he turned down a spot in Ann Arbor. Same with Brinkman, who at one time was considered a top prospect.

On second thought, maybe it's semantics. He might have turned down a chance at a spot....not exactly the same thing.

If I recall, he was invited to play his junior year, which would have been with the U18s. Turned that down with the goal to win a state title.

Stranges and Musty are more recent, but Mittelstadt is unique in that he turned it down to mostly play high-school.
And it's obviously easy to say now in hindsight, but it proved to be a bad decision. He would have developed much better with NTDP.

Maybe, he went to a program that has helped produce elite players in his play style like Marner and P .Kane (who went USNTDP to London). Hard to read too much into a one-off example. London is probably the best development team in the CHL. He just might be another Jeremy Bracco.

Edit: Oh, its about Mittelstadt. Probably true.

Yeah I meant Mittelstadt. And really it was probably more the off ice stuff that would have helped him at NTDP, learn how to be a pro. He got drafted simply off pure talent.

Wrong. The players that stay in MN HS do fine... If you're good you're good. One season with the NTDP away from his friends may have been miserable for all we know.

Mittelstadt's problem was leaving college after one year when he should have left after two if not three. We all knew it was the wrong decision the minute it happened.

Not sure if it’s permanent, but this is with the U18’s, not U17’s. If he’s getting looks to move up so early in the season, that’s a pretty great sign. Those guys with the DP have a great track record.

It's likely not permanent. They didn't have 12 healthy forwards, so they called up one forward from the 17's. The 17's don't have any games this week and this game was at home. Not too difficult to add one of them for this game, but this suggests he's the early favorite among the forwards to move up later on in the season.
