One of my favourite picks from the last draft.

I've been pleased with Korshkov (obviously he is injured now), but at the time, I really wanted to come out of the 2nd round with Grundstrom and Asplund.

Not really. If we talk about detroit players I think Franzen is more similar. I do not see much similarites with Holmström. Holmström was maybe the best in the world infront of the net in PP but worthless on pretty much everything else, he was one of his kind. Grundström is a strong powerforward with a great shoot that do not try to play to fancy, but very distinct, he is strong with the puck with a strong winner attitude.

He can score goals, so that is sexy.

I don't see the Franzen comp, even if his playing style is more similar to Franzen he's never going to be 6'4" and 230lbs+ which was a huge part of Franzen's game.

I agree that Holmstrom isn't a perfect comparison either, Grundstrom is a better skater and shooter but he scores most of his goals from below the faceoff circles so I think their roles will be similar on the offensive side - plant infront and score ugly, Grundstrom may be a better dump in retriever because of the skating

I'm not trying to tear Grundstrom down either, that type of player is something that the Leafs can really use, I just think we're getting a little over-excited on Grundstrom because of his goal production in the SHL.

I would also love to be wrong here, if he turns out better than I think he will that would be wonderful

I wasn't very high on Grundstrom in his draft year because whenever I was able to catch a Modo game, I always felt a little underwhelmed. The steps he has taken this year with Frolunda and now in the World Juniors has made me a believer. He looks like a man amongst boys out there in this tournament. Very impressed with him.

He had all of these abilities when he played for Modo as well but he didn't show them on a consistent basis.

His hands and skating look so much better than I thought they did last year. I'm starting to see a pretty good upside here.

Could he be in NA next year? NHL? Looks like a perfect linemate for Matthews.

Should be on the Marlies but like the guy above said, there's a lot of competition at the wings already, with more winger prospects knocking on the door. Moves will have to be made. He would look nice beside Matthews though. More skill than Hyman but plays as physical.

Who in their right mind would put a prospect in the AHL over Frölunda?

I wouldn't do it this year because there is no reason to call him up. But, if he has a legit chance of being called up then the AHL is preferable.

I'd wait at least a year to see if he can develop his offensive game even further. He'd likely be molded into a bottom line energy player if he heads over now. Ofc there is also a possibility that he makes the Leafs straight out of camp, I wouldn't rule that out.

I don't think there is any chance he'll be brought over this season. They only brought Nylander over mid season because his team was bad.

My guess is he is brought over for 2018/19. But I could see a chance that he is brought over next year. Leafs and Babcock don't really run a top 6/bottom 6 set-up. For most teams that approach is outdated, it tends to be 2 skill guys on each line with a grit component. Obviously sometimes are deployed in a more checking role, but most of the lines have a versatility component to them. Kadri's line gets the dirty work right now, but I wouldn't call him our 3rd line center. We seem to run a sheltered-zone start line (Matthews), a balanced line (Bozak) and a defensive zone heavy line (Kadri). Long-term I think Matthews gets that balanced spot, and Nylander is moved to centering that sheltered line. Grundstrom has the skill and grit to fit into any of those lines and roles. Or atleast if he reaches his potential he does. Leafs aren't going to bring him over to develop him into a 4th liner.

I would prefer to see a year in the AHL so he can get used to NA hockey. But from the looks of the WJC he may not need a full year.

I think a more important question to ask is if the Leafs have enough contract room for him. I would like to see him and Korshkov (#31 2016) brought over so maybe they will only sign them to AHL contracts
