I don't know if he will be classic goal scoring winger. Maybe more a grinder in Hyman's style
But if the top lines are something like. Grundstrom, Matthews, Marner. Soshikov, Nylander, Kapanen, Lindberg, Kadri, Brown. ???? Gauthier, Hyman. Well something like that, lots of balance and you can send out multiple forwards on the PP

Grundstrom is exponentially better than Hyman was at 19 or 20.

His hands and shot are so much better at 19 than Hyman is at 24.

It's not even close.

Which is always a foolish way to look at things given that Hyman clearly developed a ton after 18/19. Remains to be seen if Grundstrom is an NHL player

Zach Hyman is not even close to a good comparison.

Hyman didn't develop until he was 22 years old. Before that, he was a 3rd/4th line forward in the NCAA.

Grundstrom's talent and ability could overshadow anything Hyman is capable of, starting next year.

Hyman is an elite 3rd/4th line checking winger in the NHL but he's not even close to Grundstrom in terms of talent.

Grundstrom has legitimate top 6 potential. I am not sure where this idea came that he has low upside or will just be a third liner. The Komorov comparison isn't a good one because Grundstrom has much better tools than Komorov. I agree with the above poster that Hyman is an extremely poor comparison. Grundstrom isn't that far off from what Hyman is right now.

His style is grinder esque, and he scores most of his goals two feet away from the net but his instincts and the way he sees the ice makes him much better than your typical grinder. The fact that he is a top goal scorer in the SHL isn't a surprise to anyone that watches him on a regular basis. It isn't just some fluke, he has made considerable strides this year.

I see many Leafs fans gush over a guy like Kapanen or Liepsic(sp?). I like Grundstrom a lot better than both and won't be surprised if he ends up better than both in the NHL. He is already playing much better than Kapanen did in WJC last year and Grundstrom is younger than Kapanen was last year.

No I think he's surprised pretty much everybody, long-time followers included.

Naw I think it is far more likely they let Marner and Matthews have their own line.

Obviously, it's great to spread the talent/offence around. But the Leafs have so much talent right now, I think they can easily pair Marner with Matthews, and still have TONS of talent to throw out on the 2nd line. Nylander...Kadri....JVR....and one day soon Kapanen....Gundstrom.....will all be competing for spots there. And other teams will have FITS, trying to deal with it all.

I just think that Matthews and Marner are becoming fast friends on/off the ice. They're destined to be together. The chemistry will be excellent.

That's a great comparison of playing style IMO.

Agreed. Great comparison. Watched a lot of Renberg when he was with the Leafs, and a little with the Legion of Doom. He's the perfect 3rd banana on a skilled line. Puck retrieval, defense, forecheck, finish easy setups by more skilled players.

When I saw Grundstrom in Helsinki last year I thought of Johan Franzen. Great hands, drives the net hard, strong on the puck.

I think he's going to be a pretty good point producer on the Leafs if he gets time with Matthews, Marner, or Nylander.

renberg was a very gritty player, he might not delivered many hits every game but thats another story.

must've ended once he got to Toronto, where he didn't throw many hits, or play very gritty. Not saying he was terrible, he was productive with Mats... but definitely wouldn't be called gritty.

He's saying Renberg was gritty even though he didn't throw a lot of hits, and he was more or less that way in Philly too.

He was gritty because he went to the greasy areas to score, and battled in the corners to dig out pucks. He mucked it up, but he wasn't a fighter or a guy like Komarov who liked to throw hits.

Swedish posters have said the same thing about Grudstrom. He's gritty, but he's not the kind of guy who's out there throwing hits like a Tucker. You don't have to fight or throw hits to be gritty, at least imo.

Saw him play tonight, kids got a good motor. Doesn't hold back throwing his weight around, and seems to have good finish in around the net.
