2 more assists through 2 periods tonight. Pretty hot start for him.

How good is Val D'or? Will he be traded for or are they good enough to make a run this year?

Val D'Or is in a rebuild. He'll probably be on the trade market. I could see him in Baie-Comeau. They're the favorites to win the cup in the QMJHL.

That's not at all objective. There may well be a disparity between a leagues best goaltender, and the rest.

The bottom line is that the variables between leagues do make for true objectivity being almost impossible- especially since no matter what junior stats are crunched when its all said and done the OHL has had a horrible record in producing elite NHL goalies for some time.

Still missing the point. The OHL not producing elite NHL goalies doesn't really say anything about the overall quality of goaltending in the OHL. :help:

Anyway, of course Mantha's making a big difference so far, but for those who've been watching him, how's he look?

Just to prove the point about the goalies, the OHL has claimed 2 former QMJHL goalies from waivers. 20yo Philippe Trudeau is playing for Ottawa. 18yo Jack Flinn who was offered to every team in the QMJHL last August is now playing for Owen Sound.

Happy to hear Flinn got picked up. He could do very well in Owen Sound.

And if Mantha goes to Baie-Comeau...wow. Him and Zykov on a line would be deadly.

I only watched one of his games and I heard his name all game long. Last year I was a big Mantha fan but I have to admit at times you wondered if he was dressed. I remember one night I was wondering if he was dressed in that game and he actually ended up scoring two shortly after. Personally I had no problem with his game for as long as he scored goals. That said, in the game I watched Val d'Or this year, I kept hearing Mantha's name. He controlled the play for a big part of the game. Great skater, so he can move the puck in and out of zones pretty easily. Took a good 10 shots that night. So, looks great overall. Still don't think he's a great playmaker in the making but seems to get his share of assists so far.

Val d'Or isn't very strong a team either.

Yep- saying the Q is a weak league for goalies pretty much defies accepted hockey gospel. If there's no way to get an objective look you gotta go with opinion and results.

Is Val-Dor a top team in the Q this year? If they aren't & Mantha is able to keep up his play they should be able to get a kings ransom for him at the trade deadline.

They weren't projected to be, but if Mantha plays like this he may be able to carry the team himself, but of not like you said he'll get traded for a kind ransom....the Mantha Ray is in full effect

Although I will conceed that the OHL deserves all the credit it deserves. No matter how you flip things over the OHL comes up as the better CHL leagues in pretty much all aspects. The WHL and QMJHL are basically the same. That said, the difference between all 3 is marginal at best.

Maybe I read that wrong... but they're pretty much polar opposites. I see the Dub as the hardest league to play in with the grittiest and most defensive teams, the QMJHL as a high scoring league to hone offensive skills and the OHL as just a slight bit ahead of both as a mix of the two.

From a quantitative point of view, players from the Q and W adjust to the NHL at about the same rate. I use different models from nhlnumbers but you can see they get to similar results.

Basically says that you can expect a Q player to score at a 29% of their junior scoring rate in the NHL whereas WHL players score at about 30%.

I was talking about style of play. That's what I got from your post, but perhaps I misunderstood.

No that's fine, I made a general statement when I should have mentionned that from a quantitative point of view, players from all 3 leagues adjust to the NHL at about the same rate. From a qualitative point of view, you will surely find a lot more differences between all 3 leagues.

Leading the Q in scoring with 14 points in 5 games.

Just good enough for Team Canada's 4th line. :P After all, they have to make room for Hunter Shinkaruk...

Mantha could play RW, so you could run with a top line of...

Shinkaruk,McDavid,Mantha

something along those lines, and yes I could see McDavid play top line minutes, but that could change based on who gets sent back the junior(ie Monahan but that seems unlikely imo)

Man I really wanted this guy on draft day. Lazar is a solid prospect but Mantha is going to be a star. Really envious of the Wings 2013 draft (minus the Bertuzzi pick).

Meh. It was decent, but I don't think it's overly amazing.

If Mantha can shed his reputation of being lazy and soft he could very well be a top player out of the draft. Outside of that, not a whole lot to see. Nastasiuk might turn out to be a good depth player and Janmark-Nylen draws a lot of interest just because he's a Hakan pick that has the same sort of "mystery" surrounding him as Datsyuk and Zetterberg did, but will he ever amount to much? That'd be a long shot.

It's not like 2010 or 2011 where we got a ridiculous amount of talent that stuck out immediately. (Our 2nd round in 2011 alone was better than a lot of teams' complete drafts)

All that said, regardless of any criticisms about Mantha's effort and physicality, stats like that can't help but make you excited for his future.
