He only played 5 games and has 14pts so far, not 19

I wasn't overly excited about this pick on the draft day but since then reading about him and seeing him destroy Q so far makes me go all

something along those lines, and yes I could see McDavid play top line minutes, but that could change based on who gets sent back the junior(ie Monahan but that seems unlikely imo)

That line would be nasty.

And its early but hes on an absolute tear right now, I just wonder how competitive hes seemed from people who have watched? Is he throwing his weight around out there?

that's exactly what i want to know as well. if he's working hard, playing physical and using his size to his advantage all the while going on this huge scoring streak early then i'll be really excited.

Even if hes isnt really throwing his weight around but hes getting into corners and working hard I'll be glad. But from reports when he gets pissed off he can be a physical player and fights a decent amount. If he could channel all that with his scoring consistently he would be a dominate player. I just hate when guys with big bodies waste them by not imposing them on other players but that isnt every persons MO
 
Could be the next James Neal. Excellent pick by the Wings, who continue to draft insanely well. In the last 4 drafts they've had only 2 first round picks (20th and 21st overall), and they've still managed to draft a TONNE of great prospects like Mantha, Frk, Jarnkrok, Mrazek, Jurco, Ouellet, Sproul, Pulkkinen, etc.

If Mantha can shed his reputation of being lazy and soft he could very well be a top player out of the draft. Outside of that, not a whole lot to see. Nastasiuk might turn out to be a good depth player and Janmark-Nylen draws a lot of interest just because he's a Hakan pick that has the same sort of "mystery" surrounding him as Datsyuk and Zetterberg did, but will he ever amount to much? That'd be a long shot.

It's not like 2010 or 2011 where we got a ridiculous amount of talent that stuck out immediately. (Our 2nd round in 2011 alone was better than a lot of teams' complete drafts)

All that said, regardless of any criticisms about Mantha's effort and physicality, stats like that can't help but make you excited for his future.

Janmark-Nylen plays in the SHL, the 3rd or at the very least 4th best senior leauge in the world and does it well. Just saying.

It's nice for sure, it's hard to belive that he got picked so late. Like what's wrong with him? If you score that many goals you can be forgiven for quite a lot of shortcomings in other areas. Good for the wings to get a guy like that. :)

Watched 2 of his games so far. I obviously don't read the game the same way most people do around here but still. I can't say he finishes his checks. He'll put pressure on d-men but once they get rid of the puck, I can't say I've seen Mantha go after them and throw them 10 rows into the crowd. The thing I want to see is him forcing d-men to make plays and he does that. He's a good skater so he can get to to his opponent very quick. Puck protection has been very good. He's created a few good opportunities for his teammates after cycling the puck. He's not playing on a very good team, so a lot of times he won't get assists on those plays but he's really making some good plays along the board and finding guys open.

Personally, I want to see him take some good shots. He'll make the NHL and be an impact player if he scores goals. Not by being some random bully that people tend to overvalue. What I love about his game is how quick, strong and precise his shots are. Last night on the PP he riffled a one-timer top corner from the circle. The goalie had no shot on this one. That's what you see from Stamkos in the NHL. Not dangling around trying to beat 10 players on the play. Simply find the open spot and bury your chances. Mantha does that really well.

Also, I've seen him drive the net quite a bit. Last night he actually got called on that (stupid call btw, even the Remparts announcer couldn't believe it). He beat the Remparts D on the outside, cut to the net, took his shot while getting hooked. Touched (not hit) the goalie along the way and got called but no way he'd called for this in the NHL.

Personally, I never had problems with his compete level. People expect him to hit everything that moves when it's just not his game. Nobody asks Stamkos to hit anyone. People are saying Shinkaruk's problems so far in camp has been his weight. He gets pushed around quite easily. Mantha's size will help him get through that and adjust to the NHL. I don't think he should use his size to run people over.
 
Hitting is so overrated. I'm so bummed the Sharks didn't take Mantha. Dude is big, can skate well, and most importantly, just keeps putting up points. He's going to be a huge steal, I know it.

I know, I was super high on him before the draft and was praying he'd get to 24. When Detroit managed to trade down and still pick him up, I was really envious. I did value Shinkaruk a bit more, but I had Mantha just outside my top-10(and before Horvat)

Looks like he's on the cusp of a monster year though.

You're bummed? How do you think we feel for using that #57 pick we got from you and using it on Tyler Bertuzzi? :facepalm:

Hitting would have likely cost him his first goal last night. He pressured the Remparts D but after the D made his pass, Mantha went by him instead of "finishing his check" and taking himself out of the play. The pass led to a turnover in the neutral zone, Mantha made it back quickly out of the zone, got the pass from his teammate and riffled one past Booth.

As he went by the Remparts D I said to myself: "that would be the kind of play people would complain about", when I thought he did what he had to do. Little did I know it would even lead to a goal shortly after.

He was the guy I really wanted for the Leafs (a guy I thought they had a shot at anyways). I was so unimpressed with him going the pick before the Leafs had a shot at him.

He's a talent, and the Wings got themselves a hella talented offensive prospect.
 
How the hell did Detroit get this kid with their 20th pick? Dang!

I remember watching draft day and Babock and staff were up on stage with big **** eating grins on their faces like they just won the motherload. It looks like now we know why they were so happy.

Typical Detroit pick. Grab somebody everybody else is scared of because there are concerns about his game and then hope he grows out of those issues.

It doesn't work all the time, but when it does they reap the benefits.

I can't remember who exactly said it from Detroit, but they mentioned that was an actual technique they use. I believe it was that if they saw a player who had actual talent, high end talent, that regardless if it was skating concerns, size, or even maturity that if their talent was noticeably higher than another player who might have some better other attribute, they'd be more inclined to take the higher skilled player. They believe that you can't teach skill, but you can pretty much teach almost anything else.

That's a pretty good technique to use, especially if you're picking later in the round. IMO, going with skill is the smart thing to do.

I still don't think the Bertuzzi was the best pick for that spot, but I'm willing to give him a chance, I think he has 2 goals in 3 games thus far.
