That's a pretty good technique to use, especially if you're picking later in the round. IMO, going with skill is the smart thing to do.

Agreed. Sometimes the way the Leafs draft annoys me because they seem to sometimes pick work ethic and character over skill, or rather instead of skill.

His on-ice effort was probably his biggest criticism last year, has his success so far been a result of him giving it more effort? Or has his game stayed similar to last year, albeit with a bit of luck to start the season?

I cant help but feel hes putting up points and scoring like a monster due to being physically superior to his peers. I have no doubts he'll make the nhl, but im totally unsure if his offensive prowess will really translate. I feel like he may end up as a frustrating Chris Stewart type player.

If one is patient I think it'll happen. I think he has the capability just gotta wait it out slowly.

Yeah. Detroit was really the best team that could have selected him. Impatience would be a severe detriment to his development, as i believe he is still way raw for the NHL. He ought to climb the ranks fairly linearly, but id like to see some real dominance of the ahl before he even gets a sniff of the big league. If developed properly i can see a floor of 25-20 type player with the ability to manhandle his way to 30+ goals as a ceiling. Time will tell, but im hoping he can max out on his potential. Certainly wont be an easy journey, but i have faith in detroit to develop him right. As a leaf fan that hurts to say lmao

Aint that the truth

I think he'll be fine, unless he bombs like that ranger prospect who eveyrone loved....god...his name evades me now....russian kid power forward, skilled scorer for the battallions...anyways yea that kid  something grachev i think?

Haha Evgeny Grachev. Duchene a.d Wolski made him look better than he was lol. Hes a nothing bust now, and i see the junior comparison but Mantha has a much better motor.

Reading before the last hurrah, I thought you were thinking of Brendl.

The best part is Wolski and Grachev got their jersey raise at the powerade centre

Mantha's size isn't a big part of his game at all, he has very good shooting abilities and isn't afraid to shoot the puck, 42 shots on goal in just six games thus far.

I think wolski could've been good if he wasn't so god damn lazy.

Well by physical dominance i mean his ability to shield the puck and outmuscle teenagers. He wont be able to do that against grown men in the NHL. Will need to adjust in the ahl for at least a season or two.

For sure.

I know Wolski personally. Honest, not a word libel, he really let himself go physically and partied too much. He was fairly out of shape in the last couple years and his lack of success affected his head a lot. Too bad, he couldve been a good player.

This is a Detroit prospect, he'll get at least 3 years to adjust to the pro's.

Don't wanna make the team better or anything, right Holland???

Well to be fair i dont think anyone saw Smith or Kindl being as underwhelming as theyve been, McCollum is a giant bust in my books, and the jury is still out on Nyquist. Tatar and Jurco are nice prospects for sure though. Oullet should be a good dman too but still a bit early.

He was a scary player in the shootout, and actually surprised me that he couldn't make an NHL career...lots of talent.

Unfortunately not every teenager can learn a good work ethic, and that's something that plagues most major sports.

Yup. The toll that partying takes on fine motor skills is not to be understated. after a while you lose a step and lose the ability to control puck suffers. He had excellent hands when he was in junior and it was quite clear he wasnt the same player at 24 as he was at 18. A real shame. Dont think he will ever play in the nhl again.

Kindl has actually improved quite a bit, and Smith, if his defense ever comes around he'll be a sure-fire top 4.

McCollum won't be anything more than an AHL goalie.

IMO, the jury is out on Nyquist, and they say he's a top 6 forward. He was sent down for roster reasons because Detroit's GM is a moron. He thought signing Dan Cleary was a good option...Detroit has a very good, well rounded prospect pool with players like Tatar and Nyquist to step into top 9 roles or greater and Holland keeps signing over the hill vets, much to the dismay of 99% of the fan base.

Jurco's a stud, Tatar is on press box duty(see Nyquist situation/he's waiver eligible) and Oullett almost made the team outta camp.

In summary, the biggest reason why Detroit's prospects aren't contributing to the overall team success is because the GM(Holland) keeps signing over the hill POS players out of "loyalty".

And to be completely honest, I wanna puke because of it.

Nyquist has gotten the short end of the stick, he showed he was ready for the NHL two seasons ago, he would be up with the Wings if Holland didn't do such a terrible job over the past few years, no doubt he is a NHLer, it just depends on if he will be develop into more than a third liner.

Kindl has consistently gotten better over the last few years though, he is making solid strides toward being a legit top 4 D, not quite there yet but a few more years and he should be entering his prime as a D-man.

Detroit's prospects develop later than just about every other team in the league, Holland hasn't made it a secret that they like prospects overripe, but he overdoes it quite often, Nyquist and Smith should have been in the NHL two seasons ago and Tatar should have made it last year.

I agree with this statement. One of the best shootout players I had seen at the time, but no drive afterwards. It's like he got his money and said screw it.

Shame.
