Mantha certainly is a bit of an enigma. He was almost invisible for the first 2 periods today, sort of casually floating around waiting for someone to shovel him a pass. Third period he woke up a bit, after the knucklehead penalty, and made a great play. And in the end, 2 assists on a lackluster game.

It does leave me wondering though how dominating he could become if he was to find a way to get the effort and energy levels up for a full 3 periods.

Mantha to me looks a lot like Eric Daze. I wouldn't count on him becoming a franchise type of player. If anything, he'll be a good 1st or, more likely,, 2nd line goal scorer, but someone who will need to be paired with a good playmaker and/or a good defensive forward.

He is definitely not someone who is the first one back helping his defense out.

Great set of hands and size, however, makes him a formidable scorer. The fact that he got two assists was a product of how well his teammates played, especially Drouin. Otherwise, he looked miserable out there at times.

Jeff Blashill and Mike Babcock will be really good for him. They did the same thing to Tomas Jurco, who was also thought to have questionable compete level and defense. Jurco is playing on the 1st line tonight with Datsyuk.

I don't think anyone on Canada played good. Mantha's intensity level needs to come up a lot. Otherwise a real good possibility for him to be first line.

Daze was actually a pretty good player. Just never could stay healthy.

Totally forgot about Daze but Mantha does remind me a lot of him now that it is mentioned. Rare combo of size, skating, and sniping but plagued by inconsistency. Ripped up the Q too - though not to the degree Mantha is - and had several 30 goal seasons during the DPE. Best comparison I've heard for Mantha so far...

I personally hope they don't cook him in the minors for that long. I understand that he has size and he'll be pressured to play a certain way by his coaches. But this is a kid that needs to improve and refine his game, not change it.

Most likely he'll play in the AHL next year, if he can carry on his goal scoring dominance, there's no reason for them to keep him down there more than that.

Will he be old enough to play in the AHL next year?

edit: Just looked it up and saw that he'll be 20 before next season starts, so that's perfect.

Another 4 pts in today's game against Slovakia. I believe that puts him in the tournament lead. 9 pts in 3 gms.

9 points in 3 games for someone that supposedly has an effort problem. Can't wait til he starts playing for the Griffins/Wings. If anyone can get 100% effort out of him, they can, and if they do, watch out.

Mantha and Hudon have both been very good. No idea what Canada was thinking having them as bubble guys.

Two words. Brent Sutter. Mantha and Hudon don't play a grinding game. Well known that Sutter likes grit players over skilled guys.

The more I see him, the more I think Blashill's gonna have his work cut out for him.

He's an elite scorer, but when the puck isn't on his stick he's damn near invisible.

So what? If he can become an elite scorer and remains invisible when the puck is not on his stick I'm fine with that. Think of guys like Bossy, Hull, Stamkos, etc. That's who Mantha plays like. Though sometimes he reminds me of Rick Nash or Eric Daze, regardless, nothing wrong if he ends up like that and at 20th overall, I would be very happy.

Stamkos doesn't stand around looking useless when the puck isn't on his stick.

What is looking useless even mean? The guy is able to get himself open to score enough goals, that's not useless to me. If you mean he's a guy that does not do a great job back checking and blocking shots then I agree, but that's not Mantha.

I feel like you're thinking that trying to find soft spots in the other teams defensive coverage is useless, he has a goal scorers mentality not a grinders. Comparing him to Stamkos is odd, Stamkos still isn't a great defensive player but has improved a lots since he was Mantha's age, just like Mantha will and Stamkos is center who is naturally more involved in the play. Anyway, Mantha looks like a great prospect which is all that matters, if he can become half the goal scorer Stamkos is at the pro level it's still a good pick at 20.

I never said Mantha didn't look like a great prospect. I said he's got a lot of work to do to improve the areas of his game where he's lacking.

Some of the things he does are not tolerated in Detroit, it is about that simple. Now he should improve, but the people that want him fast-tracked are going to have trouble understanding that he will likely stay down in the AHL stats or otherwise until he starts fixing some of the areas. I love his potential and I am happy the guy seems to produce even while sleeping sometimes, but the kinds of turnovers and some of the decisions are things that will get him in serious trouble.

I'm amazed at his ability to put up points because most of the time he's on the ice I find myself frustrated in what he's doing.

Glad to have him on this team, but I still have questions on NHL upside. He's in the right org though.

This is really true.

The guy is constantly in the wrong place but gets the puck and puts it in the net. It's almost like he's not worried about giving up chances against and as a result he finds space to score...I think in the NHL that strategy would cost him in terms of odd man rushes and chances against which other players will be able to capitalize on.

His game is the exact opposite of someone like Bo Hovat's.
