I still can't believe he was picked this late.

With the way hes scoring it does really seem odd. It was a really deep draft but scoring 50 goals, being 6'5 and can skate you would think he would have at least went around 15.

I wanted the wings to pick him because of his size but this is just shaping into a ridiculous season. I think he has still onlybeen pointless in 1 game

Since november, Val d'Or's goaltending has picked up greatly. Val d'Or is 13-3 since that time. Looking like Mantha will stay in Val d'Or after all, and who knows, with a trade or 2 they could be a serious contender in the Q. They just got an honorable mention in the CHL rankings.

Never let players with poor work ethic fall in the draft... work ethic you can teach them, talent...that's what you're born with.

If "lazy" players get the right treatment they can learn how to play the "right way".

Its similar to what happened with Getzlaf, not saying Mantha will be that good but Getzlaf was a massive, dominant junior player whose work ethic and attitude were questioned. Now hes a top player

Mantha seems to be tuning himself up for the world junior camp with 2 goals and an assist +3 with 5 minutes left in the second period of his game

Strike 2. He was a rookie with MacKinnon's class. He played all of 4 games the year before.

Mackinnon/Drouin/Poirier = 2 seasons between Q draft and NHL draft
Mantha = 3 seasons

Not trying to knock him I like his game, just saying people called him older and questionned his work ethic and blablabla before the draft

This is Mantha's 3rd season. This is Drouin's 3rd season. This is Nurse's 3rd season. This would be MacKinnon's 3rd season. Etc.

Mackinnon and Drouin were eligible for the 2011 QMJHL draft, while Mantha was drafted in 2010. And he played a few games that year, meaning after this season I believe he'll be AHL eligible (is it 4 seasons?)

You're counting 2 games as a full season?

Mantha did not play major junior as a 16 year old (2 games does not count as an accrued season). His first FULL season was at 17. He is on average several months older than most others in his draft class but he did not have any major junior experience as a 17 year old... while the vast majority of his draft class played a full season of major junior as 16 year olds...this somewhat negates his late birthday imo. Mantha was just a late bloomer. He pretty much came out of nowhere and set the Q on fire. He's the real deal.

Indeed such a late bloomer that he did make Midget AAA in his Q draft yera, playing Espoir (basically Midget AA). He was a fifth round pick.

Yeah his Q rookie season he didnt really take off until the end, I think there was some stat where he had like 70 goals in his last 80 games leading up to the NHL draft. Its weird though that his age or work ethic would trump the fact that hes the best goal scorer in the draft and a lot of teams would pass on him especially at 6'5. You would think 6'5, scores goals better than everyone else and can skate would have a lot of teams lining up for him.

I would say maybe he interviewed poorly but at his interview with the wings Holland told him right then that if hes around when they pick they were taking him. He must have left a good impression.

I guess he could still totally fizzle out and be a complete bust but right now him falling to where he did seems outrageous

He is eligible for the AHL because of his fall birthday, same reason Frk and Jurco turned pro after their third season. It has to do with the option to not send them back for an overage season.

As mentioned several times he only played two games in that first year.

This is really his third season same as Drouin.

Mantha is now third all-time in Goals scored for Val d'Or. Don't really see him catching the top two (Gamache and Dumont) but still a nice thing, can probably get as high as fourth all-time in points for their organization assuming he avoids an injury in the second part of the season he needs 27 more points to accomplish that.

Because of how well they have played I cannot imagine they are still entertaining dealing him but it would be interesting if they did. Can't believe that team is in fourth in the QMJHL, thought for sure he would be dealt entering the year.

Which is impressive since far less goals are scored in the Q now than 10-20 years ago.

Yeah even with what someone posted earlier about him being on pace for the most productive Q season since Crosby and Radulov, how much higher was scoring back then compared to now?

I don't think 10 years ago was all that different really, in fact with the obvious exception of Crosby and his Rimouski line mates, nearly every one of the top 10 scorers for 2012-13 outscored their counterparts in 2004-05..

rank 2012-13 …… 2004-05

#1 Ben Duffy 110 …… Sidney Crosby 168
#2 Jonathan Drouin 105 …… Dany Roussin 116
#3 Josh Currie 104 …… MA Pouiliot 114
#4 Peter Trainor 100 …… Maxim Boisclair 108
#5 Dmitrij Jaskin 99 …… David Desharnais 97
#6 Sven Andrighetto 98 …… Stanislav Lascek 90
#7 Alexandre Lavoie 96 …… Alex Bourret 86
#8 Zach O'Brien 92 …… Josh Hennessy 85
#9 Anton Zlobin 91 …… Alexandre Picard 85
#10 Anthony Mantha 89 …… Philippe Dupuis 84

His stat line is simply amazing, I remember people pushing Mantha to the mid second round supposedly due to his lack of drive and being a lazy player. For people that watch a lot of Val d'Or has this aspect of his game changed?
