It can be considered overrated, but it's not something that you can just ignore and slide under the rug. Physicality is the name of the game, he's not going to be playing boys in the NHL.

I agree as long as we're talking about cycling the puck, controlling the puck along the boards, driving to the net and that sort of thing. That said, you lose me when you start talking about "finishing" your checks. That Mantha won't do and I don't really care either. It's fine for defensive players but I wouldn't want a potential high-scoring guy wasting his time trying to start hitting and fighting.

I never mentioned finishing checks in my post, I don't expect him to be the foremost aggressive forechecker trying to apply pressure every shift, but I do agree with that idea to some extent. Obviously you don't have to be throwing yourself around on a deep forecheck while chasing after guys like Jordin Tootoo with a guy who has skill like he does, but if you're trying to set the tone in a game, take a guy off the puck in the O-zone, or just trying to send a message to a certain player then by all means go for it. It all has to do with the situation really. He's a big guy, if I was him I would use it to my advantage every once in awhile. I just really don't want another poor man's power forward Franzen 2.0, but hopefully his goal scoring and playmaking ability transitions so well to the point where we won't give a damn if he ever lands another hit in his whole career.

I should mention I was talking in a general way. The you didn't refer to you specifically :P

He's actually not bad of a forechecker. However, he relies a bit too much on his reach. It's working fine at the junior level. He actually forces quite a few turnovers. We even saw this at the U20. That said, he'll have to skate harder on the forecheck in the NHL for sure. I don't think his reach alone will be good enough.

I think one year in GR under Blash could really do him wonders. From all his interviews he seems like he's very eager to learn and not shy away from his weaknesses. Just gets me excited for what he could turn out to be.

I agree to some extent. That said, he wouldn't be the first player to play this way and have success in the NHL. Although I don't buy 100% the Vanek comparison because of play around the net. Vanek plays that way a lot of the time. You don't see him for 2 games, and then he scores 2.

One thing you have to keep in mind also is that teams prepare for Mantha. You know full well coming into a game against Val d'Or that he's the guy to stop. Despite that, he still finds ways to get open looks in most games.

This. as usual mathletic nails it. You know going in playing Val' Dor, Rule 1- stop mantha.....yet it never happens.

I heard Babcock say he's never seen a prospect like Mantha, at least in his time with Red Wings.

What is that story? For those of us who go to work and dont have the time to follow the NHL playoffs and memorial cup at the same time?

Well mostly its the best of the best tournament. When you're a team like Val D'or, who has their entire offence relyings on Mantha, the better teams will be able to do a good job of shutting him down compared to first and second round teams he would have played in the Q playoffs.

It was quite obvious that each team targeted Mantha and did not allow him any room at the sacrifice of other players.

RedWings prospect Anthony Mantha said he weighed 200 pounds after the Memorial Cup. He's now up to 217 pounds, and "it feels good."

Pretty standard for a player to lose significant weight during a long season. 92 games is a lot.

Gaining 25 pounds from July to October is more reasonable than gaining 17 from Mid-May to September?

It's definitely possible if I can gain about 3-4 pounds of muscle a month (lean) while being a graduate student and working full-time he shouldn't have a problem with it.

Never said it wasn't possible. Wondering why the hell people are arguing that it's more likely he did it last offseason than this offseason.

Gonna be a beast... hope to see him on Datsyuk or Z's wing right away.

At 6'5 almost 220, he at least better get a shot there in preseason to show what he has. Hes not a typical small detroit prospect that gets held back because they need to add weight/size like a Tatar or Nyquist.

Hes by far the most interesting story line going into training camp for me

No one is arguing with you on the subject... Someone only stated that losing weight throughout a lengthy season is common and he probably bulked up in the offseason. That is why there is a tweet saying it feels 'right' to be at that weight.
