Scored his first goal in his second ahl game tonight. Neutral zone turnover resulted in a 3v2 and Teemu Pulkineen feed him a slick pass for a open net tap in.

How come most everyone seems to tout Mantha as Detroits top prospect right now, just because of his draft position (or size)? If those two aspects were left out, everyone should be ******* their pants about Pulkkinen right about now to be honest...

(yeah, sorry for possible derailing)

Can score at will, pure offensive power, and he's nimble for a big man. He's also 2 years younger than Pulkkinen and is still adjusting to the pro game. He'll be a force once he adjusts.

Because he single handedly won the Q championship last year, went at over a 2 ppg pace, was named CHL player of the year and scored 57 goals in 57 games, and is a 6'05 20 year old forward with speed?

And Babcock loves him some big Canadiens

He spelled it wrong  Pulkkinen!

Off topic, but it's harder for people to spell Ouellet than Pulkkinen

I was on HockeyDB today and decided to look up Ouellet and figured just typing it into the search bar on the site would be the fastest way. It doesn't help you out at all. I tried 6 times before I gave up and went to google. I've never struggled so hard to spell anything in my life

On Mantha, much higher ceiling than Pulkkinen. Slightly disappointing start in the AHL, but really it's to be expected with the injury and first year as pro, but I still expected him to come in and dominate right away. Still expect him to start to dominate the AHL and have a long span over a point per game before the season ends

Missing over 6 weeks at the start of the season with a broken leg is an enormous setback. It would have been godlike to return immediately from that and be a PPG player as a first year pro. He's still working some rust off, I expect him to start ramping up his production within a few weeks. The talent is evident.

After last year's flurry of manthamania there hasn't been a whole lot said here. How has he looked in the AHL? 12 pts in 24 games so far... Not awful but not as dominating as I think some expected.

Is he improving as the year progresses?

It's a combination coaching/depth issue. For most of the year, Mantha has been saddled with mediocre linemates (by AHL standards) that he doesn't mesh with. He was showing some promising chemistry with Andreas Athanasiou, but AA got injured and Mantha has been pretty quiet since.

But I say there's a coaching issue because there's a lot of round peg square hole type coaching going on. Mantha doesn't do well with linemates X and Y? Let's play him with them until he does! and so on.

In the games I've seen, he's been pretty good. He has flashes of crazy gamebreaking skill, and his skating is very good. He still floats a bit at times, and I think that's another reason why coach Blashill is giving him a hard time.

I don't think 12 points in 24 games is necessarily bad after missing so much time due to injury. I think he'll pick it up though as the season moves along.

Going into this season, I contended that Mantha was further away than most Wings fans thought, especially with the leg injury. I thought he would develop into an effective NHLer, but that it would take some time and work on his part.

I have watched about a dozen of his AHL games and I think he actually looks better than expected notwithstanding the lack of production. He is working much harder off of the puck than he did in the Q and he is staying in plays longer. There is still plenty of room for improvement in this department, but I do think his game is showing meaningful signs of maturing. Moving forward I think he is going to need to find a way to create more of his own offense, but there is nothing missing from his tool box or head to suggest that he won't be able to do so.

Oh, and the kid is extremely athletic for his frame, even by AHL standards.

The hype

I will be honest, i did not watch him play at all this year, but his stat are quit underwhelming for a future 40 goal scorer no?:sarcasm:
9 goals in 42 games....:help:

Remind me how many goals Pacioretty scored in the AHL when he first got there again?

He's not in GR to score, he's there to be a better player and to cut his negative tendencies like not taking 2 min+ shifts and getting benched if he floats. He also doesn't get 1st unit PP time, well he's not even on the top line at all. Breaking his leg hurt his development when he was slotted to play on a line with Dats and Nyquist in the pre-season.

If you don't watch him just read the above posts. Literally 4 posts before yours someone said the exact same thing, but I guess it's cute to bump a thread with Smilies.
