Great offensive potential but my god he needs to fix his play in his own zone, the Marner goal last night was terrible effort on his part.

He'll never be known for his defense, but that play was actually a rare instance of him looking that bad in the d-zone. He has a come a long way.

Mantha is an example of how prospects should develop. He could have been put in a Virtanen situation where he was forced into situations he wasn't ready for but Detroit slowly marinated him in GR and are reaping the benefits. He had all the tools unlike players like Frk, Pulkinnen, Tvrdon who were lacking something key. Svechnikov also has alot of tools so hopefully he can develop well in GR before coming up when he's more than ready.

If he didn't break his leg in camp at 19 his development path might have been totally different. Detroit beat writers all said he had a legitimate chance to make the roster right out of camp, like Larkin did at 19 not long after.

I don't think he was ever that close. Holland laughed at that deal.

Friedman tweeted about a month later that it wasn't even Mantha, but Pulkinnen that the Leafs were asking for but Holland wouldn't include. Never seemed like he was interested at all in Phanuef

I think you have it backwards. Pretty sure it was Detroit that was offering Pulkkinen, Smith, and Weiss in exchange for Phaneuf and Toronto counter with a package that included Mantha. That's when Detroit walked away.

I can go look for the tweet later, but it was well after the deadline that Friedman reported it was actually Detroit who said no to including Pulkkinen in a trade for Phaneuf

Edit: after a quick search I found this. I believe there was something else as well.

Not sure how to embed the tweet.
