i got roasted here for telling everyone to slow down on the hype his size advantage was much greater in jr's, than it is in pro hockey he can't just bully people with it at this level
Agreed. I thought he was gonna be great, but he's clearly a bust. Just like Getzlaf is definitely done as an elite player and Anaheim will miss the playoffs.

You got criticized for having no idea how he plays? That is a shocker. Mantha has been consistently criticized for not using his size; he was never someone that used his size to dominate juniors. Not that I'm trying to excuse his lackluster stats thus far but you clearly have never watched him play.
Lol seriously. He was a pure finesse player in junior, and he's still mostly a finesse guy, although he sometimes lays a big hit. But he's the furthest thing from a guy who uses his strength and size to affect the game.

I am sorry but the latter is more common than the first.

This is a strange comment.

That is the point i was trying to make.

We have a Leaf fan in here talking about a prospect he has no idea about, going by the stats sheet only and trying to tell people the future of this prospect by it instead of watching him. Why even come in here and talk about it if you have no idea what you are talking about. Everyone is an expert because they boxscore watch.

Well eventually the points have to come. I also didnt see him calling Mantha a bust, just lowering the expectations. The fact he is a Toronto fan shouldnt matter.

As for your comment ''there are TONS of guys who have struggled in the AHL and got it once they got called up'', I disagree.

he never did use his size to bully people, that was his downfall was that he does not use his size, his game was skating, shooting and puck handling. Maybe watch him play before assuming on size and how he was doing in junior compared to AHL.....the guy IMO will pan out, needs a few more years.

agreed but talking about a guy when you dont know anything about him does matter.

What's wrong with Mantha? His AHL production doesn't seem good so far.

I don't think you're very informed.

He's out with an injury after getting in a fight. Prior to that he was putting up great numbers after starting the season with 2 pts in 7 or 8 games. He's been on fire recently.

Same goes for Athanasiou.

The griffins were the AHL version of the ducks. Noone could score, team had a crazy low shooting percentage.

I think we are pretty informed. He was not that good last year and has 2 goals in 13 games this year to go with 7 points. YOur definition of "on fire" needs work. I would wholeheartedly agree with the above poster that he has not been that "good".

I've been watching Griffins since the start of the season. Anthony Mantha has been the ONLY silverlining to that entire team next to AA. If it wasn't for him, I wouldn't have even bothered watching them play. His play has been incredible, he's been the most important player on his team.

Big (6'5") guys like Mantha are usually late bloomers. He was spectacular in the pre-season (6 points in 5 games) when he actually got to play with some NHL talent... no doubt he's going to be a good one!

Looking at a stat sheet = pretty informed? ooook

The other side was arguing with stats too. Unless you have some first hand viewing descriptions to add to the discussion, not sure you are in a position to be laughing.

I've been watching the games and I can tell you from first hand experience that he's been good on both sides of the puck, physical, skating fast like the wind and has excelled with spectacular offensive instincts, but like the Ducks earlier this season, the team just wasn't finishing. So yeah... the stat sheet doesn't tell the whole story, I'm afraid.

Not to mention, he was a BEAST in the preseason when he actually got to play with a little NHL talent.

Of course, like many here who don't watch games, we can just disregard all that and declare him a bust right now. Those same people that want to call him a bust would surely be the same fans that would KILL for him to be in their prospect pool.

i wouldn't kill but i sure would take him! he was getting his name on the score sheet in his last five games before injury. crappy time to get hurt.

I at least have access to Griffins games? Not sure why anyone would be in the thread if they don't watch him.

I remember when everyone was saying how Mantha couldn't do anything but score. Now he is becoming a more complete, consistent player and we have turned to looking at the stat sheet to question his "performance".

Kid is playing just fine as we've stayed plenty of times now. One of the Griffins best players and continually making strides. If you want to make assumptions of his play just by looking at the scoresheet go for it, but you will not see the whole picture behind his development.

After starting with 2 points in his first 8 games, Mantha scored 10 pts in his next 8 games. He started slow just like the griffins, who are now on a 10 game win streak. Everyone on the team started slow to be honest.

nopenopenope thats not good at all. 200 points in the ahl or bust:sarcasm:

Watched him tonight. He's a fast and fluid skater for being such a big guy. He easily kept up with Anastasiou on that 2 on 1 break away. Had a sexy seeing eye pass right on tape for the Greek Lightning goal.

As expected his production is increasing as the team has become less snakebit. He's not quite tearing the AHL up like Athanasiou is, but his numbers are at least starting to reflect the fact that he has improved from last year.

2 more points tonight for mantha

Yep and he looked good as well. His size and speed in 3 on 3 OT looked really hard to stop out there before he set up the winner.

Hes played great all year and most who actually watch the games have known this break through was coming sooner or later. I hope this is the streak he needs to get that offense going in the AHL. 12 points his last ten games, if he can stay around PPG the rest of the year I would be happy but I'm more hoping he just keeps playing how he has been all year and doing the little things. Even when he wasnt scoring earlier he just looked a lot better all around

Mantha and Athanasiou have the same number of games played and points. Though Athanasiou has more goals. Mantha has looked very good lately. I'd still like to see him shoot more but his overall game is really rounding out nicely.
