Funny how no one here wanted to talk about point totals until it fit their argument. Now it's all anyone is talking about. Typical.

No one here wanted to talk about point totals that actually watched him play, you know the thing you should do before you start talking about how good or bad a player is. Anyone who watched him this year and preseason has said he looks great but the entire team wasnt scoring to start the year.

Now that bad luck is gone and with some extra confidence Mantha is probably the hottest scorer in the AHL the last 10ish games. People who have actually watched him this year have known he was going to start getting his fair share of points. The only thing you can speak to is point totals, whereas myself and quite a few other posters actually have the whole picture

Mantha was always a good prospect. Not all Players have the same developmental paths. I must have missed all the Mantha bashing last year, because I did not really post on the Main Board all that much. But if he got criticism, I would have said he is adjusting as at times bigger lankier, less exceptional skating players do. He was always a smart offensive player, he is figuring it out now. Looks promising to me. I am not surprised.

Great that he's producing.... but the fact that he strugled till these past few games show you that he's not ''that'' great of a prospect to begin with..... i still remember that some people where calling him a futur 40 goal guy:help:

What is ridiculous is that people were saying he was struggling early this season when he was definitely not. 3 shots/game average, much-improved two-way game and effort. He and the entire team had an absolute lack of puck luck and that was it. Yet some people used that slow start on the scoresheet to boost their "bust" rationale.

Mantha is not playing better now than he was playing earlier this season. He is playing the same, with some added puck luck regression to the mean if there is such a thing.

Future 30-goal scorer in the NHL.

It was less a matter of Matha being bashed than a pushback against a tendency of some - particularly Red Wings fans and certain publications - to significantly overrate him.

He hasn't really struggled at all this season. Fantastic training camp, and consistently one of Grand Rapids best players. Look at him play and you'll see why people have been high on him and continue to believe he has tons of potential.

Overrrate him? He won CHL player of the year, led his garbage team to within a game of the Memorial Cup, and is a 6'5 monster with insane reach and skill. Every team would be excited to see what he could do at the next level. His hype was justified and still is.

Lol, Jesus.

There are a number of Wings fans who have access to Griffins games. And I'd like to think Wings fans as a whole take a more active interest in their AHL team than most fanbases do, largely because the organization has historically kept so much NHL-level talent buried down there for seasons at a time and we've, until recently, been starved of seeing our organizational youth in Wings games. It makes the Griffins that much more attractive. And it makes many in the fanbase that much more informed.

A lot of us watch the games. A lot of us didn't like what we saw out of Mantha last year, statistically or on the ice. And a lot of us liked what we saw out of Mantha individually from the start of this season. In fact, someone on the Wings board made a thread about how good Mantha looks in GR this year a month ago - before the points were even there. The points coming now has a lot more to do with the fact that the team is finally playing cohesively under Nelson and had such **** luck to begin with.

I mean, do people even know how bad the Griffins start was? They went 1-7. They scored 11 goals total in their first 8 games. Solid AHL veterans in Callahan, Miele, etc had abysmal stat lines compared to their norms. The team even went as far as to do this:

The discrepancy between shots and goals is such that Nelson had an in-house volunteer look and chart every one of the 285 shots to gauge the quality of chances, based on a formula used by the NHL. According to Nelson, "we are by far the most unlucky team." The study reasoned that with better puck luck (broken stick, catch an edge, inadvertent ref interference, etc.) the Griffins would have another 15 goals, or more than double the total of 11.

In short, stop making claims base on the stat sheet. Even the most biased of parties would have seen that Mantha was far from "struggling" to start the season.

The fact that Mantha couldn't score with the griffins who struggled to score for awhile means he sucks

how do u not score on a struggling team? geez,

well at least Anaheim is a cup contender.

Guess my question to you is what is YOUR definition of "strugled"? Because my definition is he didn't struggle, like at all. He was snakebitten. The entire team was snakebitten. Believe it or not, it happens in the NHL, too!

Well, he's certainly earned a call up. I wonder who the Red Wings bring up for Sunday.

Didn't Grand Rapids have a ridiculously low shooting percentage to start the season? Something like 6 or 8% through 10 games? That's why Mantha wasn't putting up points. That level of poor shooting / poor luck isn't sustainable for the long haul and now that it is reverting back to the norm the points are coming for everyone, especially so for Mantha who has been the teams best player all season.

I think it was lower than that to be honest, I know at one point I think when they were 1-7 or something like that it was at 4%

Mantha has been the best player on GR this year in my opinion. He is starting to get rewarded on the stat sheet, but I love his progression, he actually played well in January and February of last year before injury struck again. Guy has a very bright future.

21 points in his last 20 games. Turned 21 3 months ago.

Clearly a bust :sarcasm::shakehead

He had two more points tonight.

Was great on the forecheck and had some good defensive plays too. He's really starting to turn a corner here. I'm looking for him to keep going at a PPG pace for the rest of the season.

Hopefully he'll get a call up to Det at some point this season.

That's what I keep trying to tell people. He's not the Mantha they're used to, where if he isn't scoring he isn't contributing. He's making plays all over the ice, and in all situations.

He makes several great plays that don't lead to goals, whether passing to teammates who miss the net or hit the post.

Another goal for Mantha tonight against the Marlies while making William Nylander look like a fool in the process.

Should had a primary assist, but the guy he passed it to couldn't tap it in a nearly wide-open net. Mantha also had some really nice looks in front of the net. He could of had easily 4 points tonight. He needs to play with better talent.

Who Mantha? Mantha had a good game. He forechecked, backchecked, drove the net, made incredible slick passes (his teammate couldn't tap in easy goals), breakaway, was fast as all get out, smart defensively, used his size in front of the net, and had some amazing shots that got through to the goalie. He could of easily had 4 points tonight.

That's just how Mantha plays. Put him with better teammates and his points will increase. He was a top point producer in the pre-season when he had better talent to work with.

Watched the game tonight because of Willy and also paid close attention to Mantha. Don't get the hype TBH. Should be a solid middle six NHLer, but nothing special.

Obviously I was referring to Nylander. Did Mantha have a concussion recently as well? Serious question... I don't follow Grand Rapids.
