How so? He isn't likely to amount to a first pairing defensemen and he is already behind Guhle, Barron, Romanov and maybe Harris on the depth chart

He's realistically only behind Barron due to handedness, and one has to remember that Mailloux doesn't even have 10 more CHL games than Barron has NHL games. So they aren't exactly on the same timeline either.

The Hockey Canada story will permit the Habs to sign Mailloux. 'Cause it puts everything in perspective. A great hockey season by him and he signs. I hated the pick. I still would have prefered other players picked in the 2nd round big time. BUT I don't walk away and get nothing. And getting a 2nd round pick is nothing compared to his potential. It's keeping him. Or it's 1st round pick or value of a 1st rounder. That's all.
It will however be tougher for him to get selected by Team Canada for next year's WJC due to the double whammy of negative PR for Hockey Canada who are now under major scrutiny. Usually Hockey Canada is all about winning gold in a short tournament but this will throw a wrench into any hopes by Mailloux.

And he is also the unlikeliest to reach his potential imo

He has the tools, but does he have the toolbox? Will he be a top 4 D or will he be another Nathan Beaulieu?

I hope he stays healthy so his development isn't stunted by injuries.

Beaulieu is Beaulieu. Hopefully Mailloux isn't. We just have to wait to find out...

I have no problem with Mailloux as a prospect and think he'll, barring injury etc., he'll become an everyday NHLer, possibly a good one.

The only problem I have is that I would have preferred 3 or 4 guys with that pick before him and think he'd still have been available in the 2nd round. If not, hey, you still have a solid, possibly better prospect and not have to deal with the shitstorm drafting him entails.

Just poorly handled all around but wish him the best and a great, long career!

He will sign will us next year if he progresses well.

Why wouldn’t he? We only have Barron at RD for prospect. Petry and Savard are getting old.

Let’s be patient and I’m sure he will sign with us because I don’t think he wants the negative spotlight a second time.

Game is going away from these type of big heavy physical defensemen. Evolving more to the smaller, speedy puck moving types. Guys like Makar, Hughes and Fox. Physical defensemen still play a role, just not the importance as before. Mailloux is old school Bergevin type defenseman

Mailloux is skilled and a good skater. He really got all the tools but the toolbox remain to be seen. Last season was a complete write off for multiples reasons. Pretty sure he'd have gone earlier if it wasn't for what he did.

Mailloux isn't physical for **** lmao. He can't throw a hit to save his life right now but he is one of the best combo of size, shot and hands for NHL prospects. Mailloux is an offensive defenseman. Not a Bergevin Chiarot type.

Ya, no. Mailloux is the complete opposite of an old-school Bergevin-type defenseman.

Nevermind that we went to the Cup with guys like Weber and Chiarot last year. They were a huge difference in stopping the Leafs, Jets and Vegas. Also Makar is not small. If anything we see a rise in guys who have all the tools, strenght, speed, etc...

I wished he would hit more, though. That would make him a scary presence with all the tools he already has. And he's pretty strong.

That couldn't be further from the truth as size is still extremely important. Just look at the last decade of Cup winners.

Tampa's D are enormous as were St.Louis/Washington/Boston etc.

There is always room from a smaller highly skilled dman but he still needs to have some serious sandpaper and you can't likely have more than 1. I persionally think Girard's injury is a blessing for the Avalanche.

There is a lot of blame to go around.

1. Logan Mailloux for being an idiot. I dont care if he was 17.
2. His Parents for not teaching him right from wrong
3. NHL. They should have removed his from draft eligible players
4. Idiot Bergevin for thinking this would go over well. The smirk on his face when he announced the pick says it all. Look at how smart I am.
5. Geoff Molson for not firing him the next day.

I am all for giving Logan a chance to redeem himself and become a pro hockey player. We have not nor will we hear anything about what program he went through.
Get over it Doug.

A big reason that he may not be a great pick even at 31 is that he's not very bright and he doesn't make good decisions on or off the ice.
You have no clue how bright he is.

Beaulieu still plays in the NHL. Maybe Mailloux won't be a number 1 D, but just having a career is more than most picks get.

I would like to see by myself what kind of D he really is. I've read both sides of the type of D posters here says about him and it's contradictions. But even if he's an old style physical Chiarot type of D, any nhl team need that kind of D. Some of these old style D can be very effective over a long 82 games schedule.

Show me where you saw he wasn’t bright.
I don't know the guy personally. Seems to me when he had his issues in Sweden most ex-teammates asked about him said something in interviews like "he's not a terrible human being but he's not too swift" and many scouts say "great tools, no toolbox." Googling for that specifically I find a bit of a wider range, but I don't think I found anyone that was positive about Mailloux's decision making on or off the ice.

I'm not sure anyone is accusing him of being a Fischer-level idiot, but maybe a bit below average for a non-school hockey player?

Do you have inside knowledge or more trustworthy reports that he's a bright kid?

No, I was simply curious about it.

Looking like Bergevin should have listened to this kid, and not used a pick to bring him to the NHL.
He has not played very much hockey the last two years...

Mailloux is like a Dougie Hamilton, big and offensive at the same time.

I don't know for sure that his character will be professional, but I don't understand how the Habs could have tendered a bonafide offer, yet say they won't sign him. If he accepts the bonafide offer, he will in fact be signed, even if sent back to OHL for next year.
