They sure as heck think so. That is what Shanny responded to Simmonds when asked. In a nutshell he said there is a first for everything. Also said they are going to win a cup eventually.

Yeah, the Cubs will win another World Series eventually too. Unfortunately all the fans who were told that in 1909 were all dead when they finally did so in 2016.

I understand their faith in the talent. I am starting to believe this lack of cap space is untenable unless they move a big contract. Even taking Freddies contract off of the books and a few others, you have to ice a legitimate S.C team, and we are expecting this while they still haven't won a round.

They needed to make a step this year. Winning the division has some value, especially in a short, intense run. This isn't the Atlantic Division though.

Sounds like something about a blind squirrel and a nut...the squirrel hasn't found a nut in 54 years...:sarcasm:

It wouldn’t surprise me if the habs make a run. They just got warmed up playing pond hockey with the leafs for 7 games.

Let's see what they do over the offseason.

They usually don't say much in pressers even if they feel a certain way. But I think we can take away a few things (i.e. the core won't go anywhere, Fred is gone, and Bogosian/Spezza will be asked to come back).

In the end, making fluff changes won't do much to gain anyone's confidence in a tougher division. This upcoming season is going to be a slog if they just try to add a few filler pieces cause we all know what's going to happen in round 1 against TB/Boston/Florida.

You'd think Winnipeg isn't learning a lesson from the Leaf collapse? The Jets also have enough killer instincts to completely finish off the Oilers.

One thing I give them is that COVID put a wrench in their plans now that we have a flat cap. What I do not think works is filling your roster "off the shelf". We need some of our draft picks to make the jump or Dubas will be in tough to win a cup while teams like the AVs are loaded for bear.

Jets need to wear down the top 4 Hab dmen and the dyke will break. Habs won't be able to hold off the Jets' top 9. Last I looked, they do not include 65,24,47,97,15,20 or 19.

Definitely going to be tougher next year, the book is on how to beat the Leafs, hold the blue line and make them dump and chase the puck, something they’re not willing to do. Does it take missing the playoffs next year or just another first round exit to wake ownership up?

It feels like they are perpetuating the idea that the regular season was some smashing success when you could see warning signs everywhere. Like no showing against Ottawa, coughing up a massive lead and losing in OT. Mitch’s turnover on OT on Game 55 in a game where Ottawa out worked them and it was no biggie. The Leafs also dropped 4x games to Vancouver - first time was a power outage after shutting down Vancouver, which led to a 5-6 game losing streak. Then they lost to Vancouver twice as that team was coming fresh off of their Covid ordeal.

Even in a successful season they found unusual ways to be a weird let down at times when you thought they had reached a new level.

Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. That characteristic has never gone away.
Overall, there were really only two losing streak, the first one is fine bc the team pretty much played the same way just didn’t get the goaltending they need and the other goalie was really good. The 2nd losing streak was worrisome bc they were not playing their style but they did managed to come back and play much better.
To me, I won’t even bother looking at regular season any more bc this is a playoff team and playoff wins is the only thing that matters.
I just don’t see this team struggle to make the playoffs-barring key injuries. The key is to build to win in playoffs.
Unlike some here, I really want Foligno and even Nash to come back bc these two knows how to play in the playoffs.

Unless one of the Bruins, Lightning or Panthers takes a step back, the playoffs are no guarantee for this team. Price could also keep the Habs in the picture.

I think this year is the first time they will consider changing the core.
Dubas in particular is not as confident as before and Shanny seems more disappointed than previous years.

Price will like around 50-55 games. And Toffoli won’t be able to pad his goals against the Nucks 8 times a year.
Give the boys some credits, this is a playoff team. The question is can they win in playoffs.

Fan boycott, anyone?

Yeah, fat chance.
Way back when my uncle had season tickets for the Flames he told me the fans regularly cancelled their subscriptions if they had a bad season, good luck finding that kind of blow back in this market.........

I don't think it'll be that drastic but I 100% agree that the leafs fandom is not as strong in younger generations. I'm 21 so i'm a part of the generation that has never seen any form of success. All I know is 2 weeks of getting my hopes up in the playoffs to lose a game 7. The Leafs in round 2 is a fairy tale to me.

Most of my friends love the Raptors and watch basketball. I can't even blame them, hockey is so expensive and the leafs are a tortured fanbase. What's the point in cheering for them? I was born into this due to my cousins so that's my excuse lol

Really hard to find below 30 Leafs fans. I remember in 2019 some bars refused to even play the Leafs playoffs game on TV, citing the team being a disgrace. The fan base is withering, literally. Once the boomers are gone, so will any semblance of this team being popular.

Sure, as long as they are eased in by protective roles. Start on the 4th line if you are Robertson. Start in the pre-season if you are Sandin and really work with the skills coaches and others to understand your role on the 4th pair with limited minutes. Build it up.

Leafs will have some of this. However, if you can get players like Bogosian or Spezza on the cheap, that's a big deal. There is no replacement for playoff experience, especially on the back-end.

This organization is f**ked, no accountability from players, coaching staff, GM, President, and apparently ownership. I hope they all get participation trophies because it’s all these losers will ever win.
Unfortunately we are going to have to ride this out.
Last year the Shanahan narrative was being ready to play with playoff mentality.
Throw that out the window.

This year it’s killer instinct.
These guys don’t have a killer instinct and that’s where you need it. The core. Not Joe third line.
We are headed for the same result next summer.
