You know what I just realized? Linus has been the primary starting goalie for the worst season in modern NHL history (2021 Sabres) and the team on pace for the best season in modern NHL history (2023 Bruins). The goal is only the icing on the cake.

What a story, dude needs to write a book.

Sometimes a change of scenery can work wonders. Good for him and us.

The bumping of this thread made me think it's probably time to start doing some load management with Ullmark. His career high in starts was last year (39 games). If they split the remaining games 12/12 between him and Swayman, he'll end up exceeding his career high in starts/minutes played by more than 20%. We're all hoping for another 20-25 games from him in the playoffs, and suddenly he's probably doubling his career high in starts/minutes played.

You don't want to give him too much rest and have him get rusty, but I'd be looking at trying to give Swayman the majority of starts for the rest of the season.

In Monty we trust. I think he's done a great job with Bergy & Krejci in that department so I have no fears for Linus.

I actually think they have the rare situation where they can give Swayman a playoff game without it looking like a demotion. If Linus is tired, are goalies are that good.

But yeah the whole team is about to load manage in a big way come late March/early April. And that's a good thing, more minutes is only going to help the guys who play less.

So the bumping of the Ullmark/Rask thread led me to go look at all-time stats. You have to go back to 1970-71 to find another goalie with a higher SV% than Ullmark this season in as many starts (37). Unsurprisingly, Thomas's 2010-11 season is just behind Ullmark's.

However, that wasn't what caught my eye, it was the shutouts. Ullmark's got just 2 (though it should really be 3 counting the one he lost due to the broken skate blade). If you look at the previous 10 Vezina winners, on average they get a shutout 11.6% of their starts. Ullmark is at just 5.4%.

All of that is to say that his consistency might be the most impressive part of his season. He has given up more than 3 goals once all year, which is crazy. You want a goalie who gives you a chance to win every night, and he's done just that.

I think in the dead puck era, all this lead to more SO:

-bigger pads
-trapezoid
-clutch and grab
-much lower power play effeciency (like crazy the difference)
-no cap so less parity

I think Linus would have as many in this era with all that

THIRD STAR - LINUS ULLMARK, G, BOSTON BRUINS

Ullmark, who helped the Atlantic Division capture a championship in his NHL All-Star Game debut, posted a flawless month, going 6-0-0 with a 1.79 goals-against average and .947 save percentage as the League-leading Bruins (47-8-5, 99 points) recorded an NHL-best 9-1-0 February. Ullmark allowed two or fewer goals in each of his first five starts, then capped the month with a career-high and franchise-record 54 saves Feb. 28 at CGY. He became the second-fastest goaltender in League history to reach the 30-win milestone, doing so in his 37th game Feb. 25 at VAN. Ullmark achieved another notable feat in that contest, becoming the 13th different netminder in NHL history - and first since Jan. 9, 2020 - to score a regular-season goal. The 29-year-old Ullmark, who has made 38 total appearances in 2022-23, paces the League in wins (31), goals-against average (1.88) and save percentage (.938) this season. He is seeking to become the sixth different goaltender in NHL history to finish a season atop all three categories (minimum: 40 GP) and the first since Carey Price in 2014-15 (w/ MTL).

i would say that this was more ullmark not wanting to play for the sabres than the sabres
not wanting to sign him. tough choice. 4/20 with boston or about the same for a team
that hasn't made the playoffs since 'nam.

personally thought the contract was a little much for ullmark, but i do like him and
think he deserves at least 15-20 games before anyone starts taking a big steaming
dump on him. JMO.
I had sign Ullmark 4/20 on HF 2-3 weeks before UFA period
As brilliant as I am I never expected this season
