From all I know about goaltending, looks to me like he's stopping the puck more often this year.

Confidence could be a factor.
again, totally untrained goalie eye, noticing he appears to be picking up pucks quicker which has helped rebound control, wonder if goalie Bob has worked with him on this? Guessing that`s a stupid question

has Ullmark identified what exactly he has worked on to bring his game to the level it is now? Or anyone here who actually understand the goaltending position able to share what is the biggest change is his style that has raised his level of play this much?

I'm no goaltender but one thing I've noticed is his lateral movement in the crease is much better this season, he's moving more easily & quickly than before. IDK if he was hampered by some kind of injury last season but his movements were definitely slower in contrast to this season.

good observation, all around, his confidence and great play make life so different for all his teammates, allows them to take those risks knowing they have a guy back there who , in all likelihood will stop whatever comes his way

Other than being a solid ass street hockey goalie, I know essentially nothing...

That said, he's not over committing to cross crease plays. I noticed last year he would almost swing completely out of the crease on either left or right passes. Rebound control has been spectacular and his puck playing ability is significantly better. It's crazy how hard he's worked. His passes are hard and crisp too.

As a former goalie (didn’t play past high school tbf), the biggest difference I’ve noticed between last year and this year is he got used to the defensive system finally and understands much more intuitively where shots are going to come from. He got used to getting hung out to dry on Buffalo, so he played deeper and had to do a lot of huge side to side movements. Linus still had a lot of that mentality last year. Now he understands when he needs to be on his toes and deeper versus when he can come out and shut down an opportunity because he knows he only has to worry about the shooter. He understands now in most scenarios if he just plays big and patient he’s gonna shut down 93-95% of everything. Credit to Bob Essensa. He’s a world class goalie coach. It’s similar to how he shaped Tuukka.

Edit: plus he cleaned up his post play when the puck is below/near the goal line. Again credit Goalie Bob!

Excellent post, I agree that a lot of the issues he had last year was trusting the team around him after the gong-show he experienced in Buffalo. He looks so much more relaxed this year, Essensa has really coached him up.

I'm keeping Ullmark 100/100 times over Swayman. Said that last year, too.
Swayman biggest problem after his D hanging him out to dry is, he stays too deep in his net so if it's a quick turnover there is too much net showing. Ullmark would weigh 700 pounds if he ate all the meals owed to him for bailing out his team!

As if that wasn’t difficult enough, life away from the rink was not satisfactory.

Ullmark and his wife, Moa, believed they had found a nice home in Newton for themselves, son Harry and daughter Lily in the waning days of the 2021 summer. After moving in, it didn’t take long for them to learn that it didn’t suit their needs.

“It wasn’t a good fit for us, I would say,” Ullmark said. “That really took a toll on both me and my wife. Because it was always something. Always something that was bugging me.”

Ullmark, for example, could have been having a great day at the rink. But when he returned home, Moa would inform him of what had broken while he was at work.

They planned to ride it out in Newton, then reassess at the end of the season. Their unhappiness demanded they accelerate that schedule.

“It just takes a lot of energy,” Ullmark said. “It just drains energy. You don’t think about it all the time. But it just drains energy. After a while, months of doing it, we just said, ‘F— it, let’s find a new place.’ ”

Real good read.

I feel like i'm reading my own experience with my dad.

Did everything for my sister and I when we were kids and young adults. He hid his issues until we were out of the house and then he became so sick I had to call the ambulance only to find out it was too late and he needed a transplant or he'd die only to die 8 months later after a fall.

Thank you Linus.
