I understand the sentiment, but there are so, so many guys in the NHL whose fathers or uncles or grandfathers or older brothers played/play the game. I mean you see it watching Team USA play today--Drury, Turcotte, Pivonka, Samuelsson. Those are all guys with NHL families. If you decide not to draft guys like that you're potentially missing out on a really significant amount of talent.

Well, he's our player. Our asset. So if he's just rotting away, that's a problem for us because a guy we invested heavily in, is providing absolutely no return. Even if he's being a total **** head, I would hope we would still be somewhat proactive in trying to find a resolution.

Of course. but it teams are only willing to give up a fourth round pick or something we are better off making him come back raise his value and trade him later for a better asset

I would be ecstatic with a 4th round pick at this point.

Are teams really stupid to think that his value increases if he goes back to Sweden and plays well? He's already played in Sweden and played well. The answer is probably yes to my question but it's entirely illogical.

well it certainly isn't going to hurt his value when the other option is not playing anywhere...

The problem with this is that it sets a really bad precedent

I’m with you. I mean realistically what is the most that Lias can “rebuild his value” to at this point? A 2nd rd pick? An equally risky prospect who has a good chance of being a zero?

The potential reward isn’t high enough. I would go complete cold shoulder. If he wants to kill any chance he has left to be an NHLer, let him. The lost time hurts him way more than it hurts the NYR. Use this situation to send a message.

And I do not want any other prospects to think they can pick and choose where they play in year two of their ELC. Refuse to report to Hartford, etc.

On the other hand, we got Adam Fox and others because of those players forcing their way out elsewhere

i can't remember the last time we were on the wrong side of one of these situations...normally we are the team looking to acquire the guy who wants out or doesn't sign

Sending a message and letting him kill any chances also effectively eliminates any chance of getting ANYTHING for him, which I'm really not interested in.

It's not like guys haven't refused to report places. Drouin refused to report once. Grigorenko refused to report back to the QMJHL. I'm sure there have been plenty of others I can't remember. I mean guys going outside the bounds of the CBA in trying to influence where they play is nothing new. I really don't think it's a precedent. At least, not one that hasn't been set before. And then, as mentioned a couple posts up, there are guys like Fox who refuse to even sign. You could say Carolina is setting a precedent, but the reality is they just wanted to recapture value for their asset that they would otherwise lose.

But another part of it, for me, is that Andersson apparently isn't trying to angle for a move to somewhere specific--he just really doesn't want to play here. And if a guy is so adamant that he doesn't want to be part of my organization that he's willing to forfeit his salary and potentially any shot at an NHL career, then honestly I don't want him in my organization, and would rather move him out ASAP. The only way I would see this becoming an issue again is if we draft another douchebag malcontent who doesn't want to work hard. And if we do, we don't have to do with him what we did with Lias, just because we did a particular thing with Lias. Whatever "precedent" is being set isn't binding. And I don't think a rash of prospects will say, "I'm going to forfeit a bunch of money and maybe my career because hopefully I get traded like Lias did!"

The whole precedent thing, to me it doesn't really matter. I don't even think what we do with Lias establishes a precedent.

Not to mention that there's risk - what if blows out his shoulder playing in Sweden and it's career threatening?

There's no way I would reward this behavior. Get your ass back to Hartford, put your nose down, and we'll see what we can do.

This isn't some 24 year old that's put in his time and wants out of an organization. This is a kid who hasn't proven a thing at an NHL level and was exactly where he deserved to be.

I’ve seen people on the Trades board offer more than he is probably worth. Obviously they’re not NHL GMs but I’m having trouble imagining a scenario where his value is higher than it is now. It shouldn’t matter but he might still have the allure of being a recent top-10 pick.

Smell ya later, dude.

The best phrase to describe LA's situation right now (for those old enough to remember) is "Box Office Poison" -- is it any wonder there is no interest in him?

Here's a guy who by his actions has shown he's not a team player -- heblatantly defied IIHF when warned not to remove his medal - he took it a step further and threw it into stands; then walks out on his team and teammates and then demands to be traded.

Sorry, this is not the player I'm rushing out to acquire, no matter how cheap.

LA has only made things harder for himself because he now has to work three times as hard to gain back the trust of fans, teammates and fellow players.

Watch no one trade for Andersson, what if another team is worries that Andersson would quit on their organization?? Of course something like this happens. Watch him sit out for the year.

Buffalo still traded for Vesey’s rights. Team’s will still take the risk if the price is right.

And how does that relate to Andersson? At least Vesey showed up made an effort.
He's talking about before Vesey turned pro. Buffalo traded for his rights which gave them a couple extra weeks of exclusive negotiation, even though it was pretty much universally understood Vesey was headed to free agency. So the point with Vesey is that Buffalo decided that a third round pick was worth the risk. A team will most certainly take a flyer on Andersson if the price is right. At some point a gamble on a guy like Andersson is worth it.

Can we maybe change the tag on this thread?

Every time I check in, I think a trade has been announced.

I think he ends up back at Hartford in 2 weeks when he realizes no one wanted to pay anything close to value for him. That would be a nice kick in the ass for him.

It's still a totally different situation. Vesey didn't abruptly walk out on his team in a snit and demand to be traded. No GM in his right mind is going to go near Andersson until he proves he is worth the risk. That's going to be a tough sell for Lias.

Eh, players have done far worse and been moved.

Now, if someone is hoping for him to be a centerpiece to get a big return, than no. But there’s value there, especially as you get closer to the TDL and off-season.

What??? He throwed his medal to stands??? Have not knew that. And here good guys spend 13 pages for him? The guy cant command himself and is a good example of a self absorbed diva that does not really deserve any serious consideration, not to speak about any roster. We are fortunate he did not cut his balls off after any of our losses (or he did ???).

Bye bye, Lias. Looong way, good luck.
