If Lou comes in and he wants Xhekaj badly and offers us Horvat for him, do you do it?

(and we could trade for Jeremy Lauzon at Nashville who is a big physical D playing on the left as well)

I agree with everyone who says the Vets need to go especially those with expiring contracts. Even if Montreal makes the playoffs it's likely to be a 1st round exit with or without them and you may as well give that experience to the young and up and coming players if the playoffs do come to fruition.

Savard UFA - Easily replaceable as far ice time on ice is concerned - 2nd Rounder
Dvorak UFA - Might land the Habs a 4th but you take it and let Beck play
Armia and evans expiring contracts if you get a 1st for the combo you take it and if you don't get what you want hold on to them and roll the dice on new home town deals next year.

Vets with Contracts that can also get you a decent return and are replaceable.

Matheson - can prob fetch you a 2nd maybe a low end 1st once all the D have been traded and teams are moving to their 2nd and 3rd options.

Gallagher - love him but he's on the decline despite having a fine season, I would take what I could get for him now but doubt they can move that contract.

Josh Anderson has some value for a playoff team looking for depth I really think he can get a 2nd from someone or be used in package with Armia Evans. (Armia Evans Anderson for a 1st and prospect + salary dump tp make the trade work)

Newhook may fetch a 3rd or 4th to a team looking for some depth on offence. He has good wheels and has shown some promise but Montreal just isn't the right fit since they're weak at C. Might as well get rid of the cap hit.

I would try and trade for Seth Jones or Noah Dobson (highly unlikely to acquire) either at the deadline or at the draft table and if that doesn't work try and sign Chykrun as well signing Ehlers in free agency.

Obviously this leaves a ton of holes in the lineup but that's where you give the kids some experience and hope they squeak into a playoff spot.

Finish the year like this assuming no big names come in

Caufield Suzuki Salf
Roy Dach Laine
Heineman Beck Gallagher
Florian Xhekaj Kapanen Tuch

Carrier Hutson
XHekaj Strubble
Mailloux Engstrom
Reinbacher needs some time in Laval due to a injury plagued season

Montambeault
Dobes

NEXT year could like something like this:

Caufield Suzuki Slaf
Ehlers Demidov Laine
Heineman Beck Dach
Gallagher Kapanen Florian Xhekaj

One of Dobson Jones or Chykrun - Hutson
Mailloux - Ghule
Xhekaj - Engstrom
Strubble
Reinbacher needs some time in Laval due to a injury plagued season
Hughes said he isn't looking for picks. He wants roster players or prospects.
So all those vets being traded for picks in your scenario is kind of moot.

Im 50/50 on this one.

Yes it favours The Habs in terms of value but Xhekaj brings a lot to the table for The Habs.....

Do I do it? Boy do I do it! I honestly don't see how this is a question?

Whereas we gave up Romanov for a 13th OA pick in order to trade with CHI for a project with a history of injuries in Dach, we would be getting an established beast at C for the next 6 years.

As much as I like Xhekaj, it's a cheap ask for a C of Horvat's quality. Not unlike Romanov, it remains trading from a position of strength at LD since we still have Engstrom coming up with a higher overall upside than Strube and we still. have Struble as a depth option at that position.

6 remaining seasons on Horvat's contract that brings him through age 36. Likely to bring it to the table at a high level for at least four of those years, perhaps adjusting a two-way role at C or the wing on a 3rd line to end the contract once a younger 2C manifests himself (Hage, 2025 draft pick, trade acquisition, etc.)

Goals, goals goals from C - 30-goal potential (3 consecutive seasons prior to this one and trending for 27 this year). Along with Caufield, Suzuki, Laine and, maybe even Demidov next season, that's five potential 30-goal scorers on a goal-starved team since Moses parted the Red Sea.

60+ point potential in a full season, solid production level for a 2C, which I see improving next year with Demidov on his line.

Leadership qualities.

Shutdown C that can contribute even on nights off when not producing offensively.

One of the better F/O Cs in the league.

Solid skater and play driver.

Horvat is 1.5 times what Bennett would be, IMO, as an impact on the Habs' roster -- and I'm a big fan of Bennett as an option for the Habs (should he agree to sign with us, of course).

Horvat has a NTC with 16 teams to which he will not agree to be traded. Is Montreal, both a Canadian team and a rebuilding team on the list as a no-go destination?

7th heaven for me if this is the opening day roster next season, even without an improvement to the D-Corps:

Caufield - Suzuki - Laine
Slafkovsky - Horvat - Demidov
Heineman - Beck - Anderson
F. Xhekaj - Newhook - Gallagher

*Assume Dach gets traded, along with A. Xhekaj, for Horvat

Guhle - Carrier
Hutson - Matheson
Struble/Engstrom - Reinbacher

Montembeault
Dobes

Habs definitely making the playoffs.

Im 50/50 on this one.

Not enough to forego improving the C-line by adding Horvat.

Great return for an undrafted free agent signing. Excellent asset management.

Nah, Philadelphia & NYI are both out. Flyers 6 pts back with everyone having a game in hand on them except for the Bruins. They have to jump 5 teams. It's over.

NYI are 7 pts back & have to jump 6 teams. It's over for them, too.

It's getting close for Montreal, too. We'll see what the weekend brings.
I think after this weekend's slate of games things should start happening. If I'm not mistaken TDL Day itself in general has been a bust in recent years. Managers should be starting to get very antsy...

Let the sitting out of players commence...
