Krivokrasov. I know he wasnt a ranger. But I for some reason fished his name out of the back of my brain and had to get it noted for posterity.

They didn't play supporting roles.

My point is, go back and look at the resources used on the traditional role guys since the 2000: Bogaard, Brashear, McLeod, Powe, Halpern, Ward, Voros, Rismiller, Shelley, White, Rupp, Pyatt, Stempniak, Carcillo, Glass, Malone, Taylor, Toms, Cigar, Dawe, Whitfield, Simon, Green, Niemenen, Taffe, Federov, Cullen, Rucchin, Hall, Isbister, Krog, G Moore, Asham, Pouliot, Dorsett. The money spent of the assets given up to acquire these guys is astonishing.
The money doesn’t matter, really. But any draft picks spent were wasted, for sure. I did like Asham, Simon, Rupp, Dorsett as tough guys who actually could play some. But I’m the whole, oof.

I couldn't respect those *******. Any goalie that purposely sharpened his stick to injure players is nothing but a grade A ********* in my book.

That whole group from Arbour down to Butch Goring's Snoopy helmet can fall off a boat into Long Island Sound for all I care. Hate every one of them.
I too dislike the Isles, Caps, and Flyers. I never could muster up any hate for the Devils though. No reason why. For the most part they were either horrible or workmanlike. In retrospect, Stevens was a dirtbag. But at the time it was all legal and normal so it didn’t register as evil.

I still feel like Smith missed out on creating a dynasty by panicking, starting with the Weight for Tikkanen deal. You had a top 9 that could have had Messier/Weight/Nemchinov down the middle, with Graves, Amonte, Kovalev, Gartner on the wings, plus players like King and Turcotte in the mix. You also had Leetch, Zubov, Beukeboom, Karpovtsev and later Nordstrom on D. You could have still added Lowe and MacTavish for the minimal cost you paid. But, Smith ended up panicking after bowing out in 1992. There’s an alternative universe where Richter doesn’t allow the 90-footer to Ron Francis, and the Rangers win the Cup that year, and are set up for the rest of the decade.

You are talking about the 92 team that was heading for greatness were it not for Maryo whining and dropping to the ice following the "slash" by Graves? That still gets me mad. Though Richter giving up a 150 goal to Francis did not help matters.

By far the worst moment in Rangers history that I've EVER witnessed. Also the worst moment of the team's past 40 years. There's not a close 2nd place. But to be fair, it was about 90 feet, not 150. 150 feet would've been grounds to trade Richter & leave him in Pittsburgh for good after the game! I've never seen a single goal more pivotal in deciding a playoff series & ultimately the Cup than that one. Let's be real, that series was the Cup Final. Neither team was losing to Boston or Chicago.

That goal is etched into my memory along with the huge 1940 FOREVER banner the Pens fans unfurled. And while we look back on it with satisfaction, '94 was no picnic either. Lots of late goals and heartache. This organization was very very very close to not having a single cup in 78 years and counting.

Those a$$holes displayed that banner in Game 6 of that '92 series. To this day, I've never been angrier as a sports fan than when the game ended & we were done for the summer. The worst part was absolutely DOMINATING the first period & Barasso stood on his f***ing head. We could've easily been up by 2-3 goals. It was pure hell once the 2nd period started. I wanted to drive to pittsburgh & hang the creator of that banner over the upper deck of the Igloo by his ankles! 27 years later & I'm almost over it.

Hindsight is 20/20. In many ways, that 92 team was better than the 94 team. I was rather young, but it's difficult to describe the pressure that gathered on the Rangers after that debacle in the 92 playoffs, followed by an utter disasterous season in '93. People thought the organization was legitimately cursed, and they had every right to do so. Point being, I won't blame Smith for what he did leading up to '94 in lieu of the longshot potential of a dynasty because it worked. They won it all. Almost every decision he made after that, however, was disgraceful. The team chased the dragon for almost 10 years after that and paid severely for it.

Not sure if the '92 team was better. They were very weak on the backend. They were, however, extremely entertaining & one of my favorite Ranger teams ever. Anyone remember that late December '91 comeback against the Caps when we were down 6-1 midway in the 2nd & wound up winning 8-6!!!:thumbu:

That 92 team should have won the Cup. Also, lost in all discussion about that team was that Smith had a deal in place for Adam Oates and Jeff Brown that included Nemchinov and Patrick going the other way. (There was another piece on each side). Smith went to Nielsen, who said Smith shouldn’t disrupt the team at that point. Imagine having Messier and Oates for the next five years down the middle.

Never heard about this trade before. Was this during the season, or in the summer after we puked it away in the '92 playoffs? If this is true, Neil Smith should be fired again for turning this down! :ha:

The worst part about that crap goal was the Rangers wasted a five minute man advantage just before it. IIRC, seemed like the Rangers were milking the clock more than going for the jugular. The bandwagon crowd started going nuts when the Penguins killed it off, and that stupid shot went in. The Rangers had no chance once that went in, even though they were still leading 4-3.

What's forgotten to history is that Richter gave up an even more egregious goal to Washington in Game #5 of the Patrick Division Finals at home. What's remembered is Leetch's incredible play late in the third to win the game. Should never had needed it if Richter didn't give that crap up.

That started my hatred for the Penguins. They didn't deserve Game #5 either. In an era where maybe one penalty shot was called in a season, the Penguins got TWO in the same game. I've always felt that series was rigged once the "slash" happened. I know I'm going to catch holy hell for it, but I also feel that the Penguins thought the Rangers needed Graves to win the series more than they needed Maryo to win it. I believe to this day, that there was no break in Maryo's arm, as he came back in Game #1 against Boston and dominated in ways a player couldn't with an injured arm.

The '92 team was actually stronger up front.

Day after Christmas. The refs were terrible. The Rangers spent the whole first period killing penalties that didn't exist. I can't be 100% sure, but I thought someone got called for a slash (major) and was kicked out of the game, but the penalty shouldn't have even been called (Cirella). Didn't Ogrodnick score with a second to go in the first to make it 6-2?

The Rangers made it 6-3 by the end of the second. And then dominated the third.

I want to say Turcotte May have been somewhere in that deal. I remember hearing that after the fact and it would make sense when you consider the type of players Oates and Turcotte were, and what type of guys would’ve been preferred on the third line in those days.

It was before the trade deadline. Nielsen liked the team the way it was and didn’t want to break up the chemistry.

I always had my doubts Messier and Oates would get along.

Robbie Ftorek’s bobble helmet
About ten years ago I went to an AHL game in Norfolk and I saw him as the opposing team's coach. I had seats right behind the visitor's bench. For the life of me I could not remember that man's name but I knew he was familiar as soon as I saw him (it must have been beer fog). The name came to me during the middle of the 3rd period. He was signing autographs during the game and I was trying so hard to remember. He still looked exactly the same as when he played for us decades earlier.

Mario was enough reason for me to really start hating the Pens. To me he's always been a dick. Even when he had cancer he was a dick. Lobbying and threatening the league for rule changes all the time. The NHL fawned all over him though. Basically he's a hypocrite. Couldn't take physical abuse but liked to give it---other teams were too tough on him but Matt Cooke was 'a good player'. Truthfully I don't think Sidney is nearly as bad. Yeah--he whines a bit but he plays harder in the trenches than Mario ever did.

As far as their fans---the great majority of them will abandon their team when it's down. It's also a team that will tank--a kind of equivalent to turtling. So they're an impossible team for me to like.

Also, one thing that always seemed weird to me--Dino Ciccarelli. He was easily one of the greatest players of my childhood and of all the guys we reminisce about from that era, I never hear Dino mentioned. Over 1200 games, 1200 points, over 1400 PIM. Despite being a generously listed 5'10". I know he had the wiener exposure thing and then he tried to kill Luke Richardson, but the guy was an amazing player.

The reference may have been too obscure, but I started calling Maryo, "The B***h that Saved Pittsburgh" when I was in high school in the mid-80's. Never stuck though.

And will be rewarded by Bettman with a lottery pick.

Absolutely cannot stand him. Great player, yes, but thought that he should play under a different set of rules.

Mario would collapse lay on the ice like he'd been poleaxed sometimes. Just embellishing how he was hurt for all it was worth and he was a really really big guy but also maybe the biggest baby I've ever seen in the NHL........and he'd pick on little guys. I remember Bobby Gould who was a little guy and who rarely fought beating the shit out of him....and he laid down after that too. He'd complain to the media about Jan Erixon checking him too tightly. It wasn't fair..... and Erixon was a very clean player....a guy who just did his job. Nobody lobbied that hard for suspensions back then but the Pens lobbied hard against Graves and it was on the f***ing 7pm national news which was just bullshit. He'd taken the padding around the wrists out of his gloves for better flexibility. Well....it was there for a reason. Don't cry about it later. That slash Graves gave him wasn't anything extraordinary for the times. Stuff like that happened several times every frigging game. Really milked that. Basically I think he's an asshole.
