HF Habs: Flames or Panthers 1st Round Pick 2025: Part II

OK but if the Flames lost every remaining game, they'd pick in the bottom 10, right? So by definition, you have to cheer for the Flames to win some of their games.
They just need to still be in contention by trade deadline.

After that, playing for .500 or slightly under should do it for a pick in the early 10's.

Calgary is probably somewhere between 11-16th. I see them getting bumped from playoffs but who knows.

Give the closeness of the East, we could realistically finish with the 7th overall pick in the draft or make the playoffs. Once that happens who the hell knows.

No matter what happens, I am making both picks available for a top 4 RD....or packaging them to move up and get the best prospect possible.

We do not need both 1sts this year with 7 picks in the next 3 rounds. Package everything and move up as much as possible. Or make a homerun trade that brings us a top piece in return to fully complete the rebuild.

We are on the cusp.

Big loss by Florida tonight. They are now only 7 points ahead of us and Ottawa and we have 2 games in hand.

The entire pack of teams is right there with us, there is a very serious possibility they fall back with the pack and are fighting for their playoff lives like the rest of us. They are not that good.

Call me crazy but I still think there is a chance we get Florida's pick instead.
With the craziness in the East and the numbers of teams fighting for a playoff spot, the Panthers are only 7 pts ahead of the Habs with 2 more games played.

In the hypothetical scenario Ottawa and Montreal win their 2 games in hands, they will be 3 pts back of Florida.

Although Calgary is a worse team than Florida, the West has more crappy teams so Flames only need to beat Utah and St. Louis basically for the last spot.

...they're a defensive mess without Ekblad...they'll be far tighter defensively when he's back & still make it...

Flames aren't picking top 10. That's decent team with a lot of games against bad teams who will be selling.

The only teams with a chance to catch them are Vancouver and St Louis. Calgary in driver's seat on both of them. Vancouver has many issues. Pettersson not the same player since his new contract and Miller has them between a rock and hard place.

Flames are 3 points up on Blues with 2 games in hand.

Yeah, there is like a 10% chance the Flames fall on their face and slip to bottom 10 at this stage. Lets look at the numbers and projection...
* 53 pts with 46 games (36 games to go)
* 11th last in 23/24 was 84 pts (10th last was 81 pts)
* 11th last in 22/24 was 83 pts (10th last was 81 pts)

Flames need 31 pts to get to 84 pts. 31 pts in 36 games (0.431%).
* They were 0.494 all of last year when they finished 9th last.
* They were 0.472 in their last 36 games last year (tank year)

With 40 games left, a lot can happen but unless they totally fall apart and say go 0-10 at some point, it's already going to be very difficult for them to fall into the top 6 as of today. So that leaves at best 4 spots with about 14 teams that could all end up there.

The Wings and Habs are hot now but will that last, NYR starting to climb back up, will they be able to get it going? I don't trust the Sens, Jackets, blues, flyers, Utah as I would assume those teams suck (I barely watch the NHL though) so are Flames worse then those teams? There are so many crap teams and I bet next year will be the same as I got to think teams are already looking to tank hard for the next McDavid.

Detroit seem like a legit good team under their new coach. They play hard and with purpose on each play. It's like they don't need high iq players, because they know exactly what they want to do on each play, so they don't have to use high IQ to figure out what to do, they just do. We'll see how much success they can have long term pkaying fast and simple.

But man do we ever need one of Vancouver, Utah, or St. Louis to over take Calgary. That would be so sweet to get that lottery pick.

We need to start cheering for Calgary losses. I know a few posters are waiting for the inevitable fall and don't want it to happen too early. I think however, the time is now for us to start seeing some fall from them.
