I recall (maybe incorrectly) that Skrudland and Keane were twin signings, like Gomez and Drury.
They were. The Rangers had just watched (let?) Messier go to Vancouver. They had missed out on Sakic. And it was decided that the Rangers would go defense first (despite not really having the personnel to play that way) and signed Keane and Skudland. Despite the fact they would then trade Lafontaine—who was the only player Keane ever hit as a Ranger.

The goal of signing Keane and Skrudland was to pair them with Bill Berg and have "the best 4th line" in the league. Also, both had worn letters on other teams and would fill the "leadership void".

Damn, I was just going to add Bill Berg due to Keane and Skrudland.

The only thing Keane ever did for this organization was end Pat Lafontaine’s career (while he was a Ranger) :help:

Have not gone back in this thread to see if he was mentioned, but an obscure name that I thought of just the other day: Peter Smrek.

Flipped one of our worst defenseman, an aging 36 year old Alexei Gusarov to St Louis for him and remember thinking, wow what a steal. This kid is only 21. Played 14 games for us to finish out that '01 season, then 8 the following year and never sniffed the NHL again.

And how about Zdeno Ciger, who we managed to flip for Matt Barnaby?

Mike McEwen. A decent offensive dman in the late '70's for the Rangers. Back when the Rangers used to practice at Long Beach, my neighbor (police officer in LB) gave my brother and I each a stick from a player...Wayne Dillon for my brother, McEwen for me. Anyway, that stick changed me from playing rightie to leftie, and from that point on they couldn't stop me, they could only hope to contain me...sometimes.

Jan Erixon, guy was such a solid defensive center back in the day.

They were actually the 3rd line. Skrudland was slotted in behind Gretz and Patty L.

It was the 90's, the 4th line was still filled with lovable goons, like Darren Langdon, or guys that looked like they should be goons but weren't, like Mike Eastwood.

Cannot recall, but didn't Kris King and Tie Domi play on the same line? Hated the Eddie O trade. King and Domi played a good role on the team.

I loved the Czech Mates because I was too young to be annoyed they were the first line.

Saw Rumun Ndur play for the Danbury Trashers of the old United Hockey League in 04-05 and always thought what a comedown it was from playing in the NHL. Not that the UHL and the Trashers wasn't fun, because it was, but it was really a league lower than the ECHL. Playing before 2000 people in Danbury on a Friday night wasn't the same as playing before 17,000+ in the NHL.
