If you’re referring to HC trial and him being a witness that shouldn’t affect any organization decisions. Batherson is entering his prime playing years and unfortunately Giroux is past them.

I agree with you & hope nothing happens, I'm a big fan of Batherson the player, but given the trial situation specifically for optics I could also see them doing something rather than having to answer questions about it & it taking focus off the team. If Formenton is found not guilty do you think they will take him back, I doubt it for the same reasons, not wanting the org caught up in the optics of the situation. It could also be one of those situations where it's better for the player to go south & get a fresh start. Of all the players that could be moved this summer Batherson & maybe Jensen because of his age I think are the most likely.

"Financially" seems to be a reference to the owner's capacity to pay the cap ceiling salaries.

Staios did find the budget dollars to sign Perron, Amadio, Pinto, Cousins, Gaudette, Ullmark.

He could have inherited a club with no legitimate NHL players, such as the 1st year Senators. That would have been a "terrible situation".

Wrt the roster he did an A job.

Fair assessment IMO. He got the team into the playoffs and improved the coaching and team overall play.

I cannot give him an A on roster moves; maybe a B. If he can acquire a top 6 RW to play with Stutzle and/or a top 4 RD who is physical and can play a strong defensive game, then he will be nearing an A for me. A lot more work needs to be done.

Edmonton and Anaheim have shown that they don't give af when it comes to having people in your organization with questionable history. Either of them will probably offer Formenton, McCleod, Hart, Dube and Foote contracts.

Worried about the Norris trade biting us, but otherwise I've been a fan of his work. I feel we would have made the playoffs even if Norris had to take some time off down the stretch, but you never know.

I think we gotta stop wondering about formenton, guilty or not, he’s reportedly retired and stepped away from hockey to pursue another career. I don’t see us or any other team chasing him.

I also didn't like the way JBD was buried, I think he had more to give as a player and looked very solid up until his injury this year. I can't stand coaches that give young players that are playing relatively well short leashes so they can put their preferred scrub veterans in place instead. It's a major deficiency of Green (and other head coaches).

As for the main question of the op.. I think Steve has done as good as you can expect given what he was left with. This will probably come off as pessimistic, but I don't really believe our current core is capable of winning a cup. Not talented, tough, or deep enough. I blame that on Dorion for essentially aborting the rebuild after one good draft in 2020. That decision occurred probably 2-3 years too soon and we have a shallow core because of it. Putting a cup winning core together should have been a simple layup after Tkachuk+2020 draft, but Dorion blew it.

Steve is doing the best patch job he can because Tkachuk is on our team, but unless a massive highway robbery trade or FA signing occurs, I'm probably not going to get that excited over our core until we tear it down again.

We actually have a nice young core comprised of BT, Stu, Sandy, Chabot, and Ullmark who are all star players, then we have Pinto, Bath, Greig, Kleven, Cozens, Zetterlund, Meri who are all core adjacent players on the young side. Then we have Yak coming as a top prospect, and we have a first this year to work with.

That’s 12 good roster players to build around with all of the major roster roles covered. We took our first playoff series to OT 3 straight games, essentially losing a series that we could have won in better circumstances, with a few roster tweaks, more experience, or all three.

Most of these guys are just entering their primes or are a few years away; they are going to get better.

It sucks that you can’t get excited by this core as it’s the best core we have had since Alfie in my opinion.

Yeah, we have a big difference of opinion on the state of the core. I’m not going to go back and forth on this, but I’m not excited or optimistic about it at all. If you feel differently I’m glad you see optimism with it.

If Steady Steve works his magic and proves me wrong I will welcome it.

I think Staois believes in taking steps to a championship (gaining playoff experience, figuring out who your playoff performers are, adding depth, keeping assets for a move to put you over the top, size and weight of your lineup) so I’m super encouraged about where we are.

This isn’t the Dorion/Melnyck swing for the fences BS “we are 1 goal away” fooling themselves and drunk on their own egos. Staois has made so many good moves, let’s not forget Dorion and DJ smith were still running this team to start last season.

I think we’ll see Staois make a significant move this summer that upgrades the roster and helps what will be a playoff lineup. Another step towards a Cup, no shortcuts and no pretending. Steady progress and daily improvement is his M.O.

Staios wanted to give him an opportunity to explore other opportunities in prime hiring season prior to his contract expiring. A real courtesy knowing that he wouldn't be a fit here in Ottawa.

They really upped their defensive game, but last summer my concern was that it would come at the expense of some offense.

I would like staios to recoup some of that offense while keeping the defense strong. We'll see if he can do that.

Would be quite the team if they could put up the offense of a couple years ago with the defense of this year. (Another 25+GF)
