FWIW, the roster on the Canes’ site has had quite a few additions recently. I wonder if it’s a preview of training camp. 13D (no Beaulieu) with Mendel, Honka, Seeley and Fensore added to the current stable of 9. I’m wondering if Honka decided to stick it out in North America instead of going back to Liiga.

I didn’t tally up the forwards, but Gunler is listed there too, like Honka. I’d imagine I’d imagine if those 2 were actually going back to Europe, it would have been announced by now.

That's promising news. Honka and Gunler are maybe my #1 and #2 for players I'd like to see in the AHL all year. Ideally, you'd have someone play for the same coach and team and city, but that won't happen for us due to our AHL situation.

The heck with a ECHL/AHL team, Canes are going to keep on stockpiling players and just run an intramural league at Invisalign arena.

Honest Question: If we end up trading either Pesce or Skjei, when would be the best time to do it?

1. Before the Season Starts
2. Before Christmas
3. Before the All Star Game
4. Trade Deadline

My Opinion on each:
1. If it prior to the season starting, then more than likely we will have to put Svech on the LTIR to meet the Cap. This could be a good thing as it will give more time for Svech to heel, and will give the new player time to acclimate to the Canes

2. If the Trade is made before Christmas, it gives the Canes time to see if some of the new players or those we have questions about like Tevo can play or are they part of the Trade. We should also have enough Cap Space available to get anyone.

3. If the Trade is made before the All Star Game then the new player will have a week to acclimate to the Canes when the Canes get their midseason Break 28 Jan - 5 Feb. I know the team can't have formal practices but I don't think there is a rule if the players practice on their own.

4. Can the Canes get a better deal? also, we wouldn't want to trade such a quality player that potentially could keep us out of the Stanley Cup. Off all the options I like this one least.

Thanks in advance for the Responses.

The only good time to trade one is whenever a trade is available that makes us better. It doesn’t matter when that is during the season. Ideally, before the season starts but it doesn’t matter.

If Svechnikov is coming back during the season, putting him on LTIR doesn’t benefit us. It makes it worse as we can’t accrue cap space.

I thought we would still accrue cap space but it wouldn't be applied until he came off the LTIR. (Thanks for the Correction)

And I agree when it makes us better, I was just looking at what time of the season everyone thought that may be?

Yes we could accrue cap after he came back. We would have to clear any additional cap space to allow us to have 7 million in space to activate svech.

Why would the Canes need to put Svechnikov on LTIR? Did he get hurt again? Do they not currently have almost $1M in cap space with Svechnikov not being on LTIR?

There’s a big difference between the IR and LTIR. IR = cap hit still counts towards the overall cap limit.

They don’t need to make any sort of move to be cap compliant. Trading Pesce or Skjei clears significant cap space.

It usually takes a little while for any additions to the roster to find their role and gel with their linemates. If we are going to trade Skjei or Pesce, I'd rather do it sooner rather than later to give the team enough time to gel before the stretch run.

Party foul!!!!

Were you not one of the posters screaming for a major move at the TDL?

Can't have it both ways, either it takes time for them to gel or we add talent at the TDL. And yes as far as the players having time to gel this statement is in fact mutually exclusive

I think it's reasonable to want to do something now, but if they can't make a move now and we have a chance to do something meaningful at the deadline, to try to do that also. Sometimes guys we might want aren't available before the season or early in the season, but they might be available at the deadline; depending on how their seasons go, negotiations on contracts, accrued cap space, etc....

Deadline deals typically aren't as disruptive as moving a player like Skjei or Pesce would be. Teams try to add a piece to get over the hump, not remove key pieces. My guess is that if Skjei or Pesce are moved, it would be before the season/early in the season.

Keyword now and at the deadline is value. Will any potential trade bring more value to the team and do more to help them than Skjei or Pesce?
If the answer is no you role with what we got

Agree.

Deadline just doesn't seem likely to me for a couple reasons.
1) as I stated above, you are trying to improve your team, not take away from it at the deadline.
2) Usually, deadline deals are from struggling teams that want picks/prospects, not a UFA to be like Pesce and Skjei

Setting that aside, you are right about value. How much value does a Skjei/Pesce/Orlov bring to the team playing on the 3rd pairing vs. what you could get back by trading one of them? Depth clearly has value as well.

As of now, the team clearly hasn't found a deal that makes sense and maybe they won't, but I bet they keep trying.

They'll probably just move Burns to power forward and roll with the other 7 dmen. :sarcasm:
