Several people have said this but I'm skeptical, moving Andersen in the summer without a replacement being in place makes no sense to me.

It seemed far fetched to me as well. Sounds like Lehner could have been one possibility. I don't think VGK would have started him in the playoffs without being confident enough about a re-signing though. Markstrom might have been another possibility. I don't know that the Leafs could have paid him anything above Andersen's AAV of 5M (and he eventually signed for 6M).

There was enough media smoke around it that it likely had some validity.

I suspect they ultimately couldn't work something out with the free agent or trade target for a replacement which collapsed the plan to trade him
Do we know who in the media said that or was it just a twitter rumor from a blogger?

I think we all suspect a move is coming sooner...maybe even today. We're closing in though and I think as the season has gone on we've found ourselves with a few needs.

1. Goaltending

Andersen going back to last season hasn't been providing anything more than league after goaltending at best. I don't think he is someone that could take us all the way or steal a game. I don't know how they'll address this in-season though.

2. A quality 3rd line centre

Engvall has had a run with it and although he looks better then he did at the start of the season, I remain unconvinced. I would have loved Staal but apparently he doesn't like Canada anymore.

3. A top 6 to 9 forward

Thornton isn't up for the big minutes consistently. Maybe Simmonds goes back with JT and 88 and it works out but we could use someone else just in case, ideally someone that is a clear upgrade. Ideally a mix of grit, higher end offensive capabilities than some like Kerfoot or Mikhayev and not bad defensively. A tall order.

4. 3rd pairing defenseman

When Dermott has a bad night, it's real bad. The problem is we can't shelter him much more than we do. It might make sense to get someone reliable. Hutton? Pysyk? Hanley? Merrill?
1) Agreed goaltending is the #1 need yet it likely won't get filled unless there's deal(s) to be made there; biggest need but by far the most difficult to fill & accomplish. If it looks even worse down the stretch than it does now, a quality goalie is put on the block (e.x. Ullmark), & there's a legitimate taker on Fred I think it happens. Those scenarios aren't unrealistic and I think it becomes more likely as we get closer to a couple weeks out of the deadline rather than the TDL. I don't know if anyone has mentioned this but I wonder if that Lehtonen for G Vehvilainen trade has a little to do with the possibility of it more so than playoff goaltending depth, specifically for the fact that if Andersen is dealt we would need to go at least 2 weeks with a healthy Campbell and Hutchinson. Vehvilainen would provide some 3rd string/backup insurance there especially if Campbell ever went down during that time, we wouldn't have to dress Hutchinson-Woll on any particular night(s).

2) Don't agree on the 3rd line centre need, maybe the forward(s) we add can play 3C in addition to wing, especially if Kerfoot is moved out.

3) yup the top 7 forward, top 6 to top 9, whatever you want to call it forward for sure. Think it's essential they can play left side. If Kerfoot is moved out, I think we might actually get 2 of these. One to play top 6 lw, the other 4th lw with at least one of the 2 capable of playing 3C and pk. If say Engvall falters or struggles maybe one plays there.

4) We need defensive depth despite what some may say. Forwards are stronger than our D, and forward depth (outside of our 4 lines) is better than our defensive depth as it stands. We only have 1 defensive defensemen for depth and that in Marincin. I completely agree we need to get a 3rd pairing guy, a guy with a good defensive game, whether or not he consistently takes Dermott's spot, it would be fine if Dermott was slightly better but ideal if he were an upgrade. Someone like Jon Merrill, or Ben Hutton, Michael Del Zotto, Kurtis McDermid, Jordie Benn, Matt Irwin. Maybe in a Granlund deal we get Ben Harpur as a throw-in/free but not as the primary depth D, secondary.

Ideally we get a defensive d that's better than Dermott but at least better than Sandin.

Given Dubas was rumoured to have been shopping Andy last off-season, it wouldn't shock me entirely to see him traded since it would help create cap space for elsewhere on the roster. This rings especially tru if the team has quit on him, and Dubas knows that.

That being said we shouldn't expect some elite, Vezina calibre starter coming back. They'd be moving to Campbell as the 1A starter and try to bring in a 1B type.

Thing to keep in mind, is that there's a reason those types are reliable starting goalies. They're unproven in the role and could flounder. You're just hoping they, together, can get hot for the playoffs and ride that wave.

I think Jonas Korpisalo is probably my favorite mid tier, realistic goalie. Has athleticism in spades, amazing compete level and we've seen him just stand of his head and battle in big games.

Think I remember hearing some of this
@Menzinger @stickty111 any link(s)?

Depends on what your thoughts are on Lehner coming to camp weighing 300 pounds, but he was great last year and has the same cap hit as Andersen now. With MAF having his renaissance, could crazy VGK be ready to move Lehner in the offseason? Wonder what their expansion draft strategy will look like?

I think Vegas just sits for the draft or may look to acquire players who teams can't protect because their franchise is exempt from it. Which camp was that? Have nothing against that if it was while he was having his hardest struggles with mental illness & alcoholism.

VGK are exempt from the expansion draft.

Thats pretty much the same offer that one website had who is not reliable. Plus conditional on resigning is not allowed anymore, so I don't buy that rumor.

Right-o. I don't know where it came from, but it would be along the lines of what I would expect.

He would be a great fit for those reasons, but CBJ is fighting for a playoff spot so it won't happen this year for sure

More like dumping him after they signed or traded for a legit #1. :D

Mantha could be had for a decent price to beef up that top six.

Mantha Matthews Marner
Hyman Tavares Nylander

That’s the guy I’m keeping my fingers crossed for. I think he’s a good fit and with Campbell let them compete for the starting spot. Ride whoever is hot in the playoffs

Having Simmons come back is no different that picking up a player at the deadline, and it not costing any assets. Unless the Leafs can improve the goalie position (unlikely during the season) its hard to see what moves can be made that will dramatically improve the club. At the end of the day, the Leafs simply need to play better, and already have the players to do so; as we have all seen throughout most of the season.

If we're going to try and at least change things up, then Ullmark might be best shot Buf is going nowhere and Andersen isn't paid much in real cash, guess we'd have to take something back to even salary

Has there been any updates on Gibson wanting out of Anaheim? Forget the D, for the first time in years I’m okay if we leave it alone come the deadline. Maybe a forward, but if you can get a crack at a Gibson, I push hard hard hard. He hasn’t been bad, the team is garbage.

Well except he has been bad IMO. Played lights out tye first 1-2 months and has been a disaster ever since. Sub .900 sv%, GAA of 3.11. The team has been bad, but so has Gibson.

Ekholm might be better than Muzzin - heck he might be better than Josi, so that would be kind of ridiculous get.

He doesn't really fit cleanly (though he can play the right side fine too)....but at the same time that would probable give us the best dcorps in hockey.

If we are in a win now mode in this shortened season, and don't believe Freddy can win a series, maybe looking at proven goalies is an other option to look at. Cup winners who teams would be willing to move.

My first thought was Fleury, someone I wanted in the off season, but I doubt Vegas would give him up given his play.

Murray is a no.

So that leaves Holtby and Quick. Their numbers are not great. How much of that is the teams in front of them? They have substantial cap hits beyond this season. With Freddy going the other way, on an expiring contract with little owed, their is potential to get something back like a Virtanen, and/or Dipietro, or some salary retained, picks, etc. At least with Holtby, he wouldn't have to wait through quarantine.

If Holtby or Quick continued to struggle, we would really need Campbell to pull through. As we are now, we seem to need him to do the same with Freddy here anyways.
