What toughness ? He fought Jordi Benn. He didn't even fight the right Benn

Oh yeah Chariot. Forgot about that. A D not known for fighting. Can't forget Adler guy who has no fight

When Taney was man handling Matthews and cross checking him. He did nothing

Lucic runs over Holl, he does nothing
Anderson takes runs at muzzin. He does nothing

Anderson takes a run st him, he does nothing

Does he lay a hit on any team ? No
He can't make a straight pass

Sabrouin in one game hit a flame player then beat up Lucic

Yet somehow he gets a contract and makes more money than Spezza ?

Even Spezza stood for this team in playoffs year. Whst did Simmonds during playoff. ?

Didn't you hear? He's a heavyweight.

I guess the Nic Petans of this world are better playing on our 4th line even though they don't really produce better than guys like Simmonds when given chances in the NHL.
Point that I am making is, treat Simmonds as a 900k player and not Wayne Simmonds. This is a depth signing and there will be plenty more. Just different names. That fact that Leafs don’t need to worry about sending these 900k players to the Marlies without losing anything is something that the MGT should take advantage.

That'll always be an issue though. Our guys who make league minimum get bitched at more than our star players making 10+ mil if they don't produce. They think every player on the team has to score like 15+ goals and put up 40 points or something. I still remember seeing people bitch when we had guys who literally played 5 minutes a game.

Remember folk just because he's signed doesn't mean he makes the team

Do you really believe that?

It's a fine theory that it's a contract that can be buried, but "loyalty" is pretty big on Keefe and the Kid's lists. You may have noticed that last season.

Agreed but I'm still hoping that you have to earn a spot

I'm well past that fantasy, I'd be happy if guys that suck get benched at this point

Keefe lacks spine when it comes to dealing with vets and underperformance

Keefe reminds me of my buddy's dad we let "coach" our men's team when we were in our early 20's. Nice guy, and always knew which line's turn it was to start the game.

That was about the extent of it. The C and 2 A's pretty much ran the show.

Welcome back Saltming good to see your posts again.
I agree with what you are saying on earning it, but it’s the 2 year contract length which makes me think a little less earn it this year (at least) more “guaranteed”.

Dubas wanted a yes man that would tell him he's smart and Keefe provided just that. Babcock got fired. Maybe he knows a little more than he's letting on?

Unless you're into formula racing people don't know there is f2 and f3 racing. Everyone just know F1 that's where all the marketing goes

:sarcasm:
Nothing beats F231 racing. Hot Wheels, baby!.

Why are fans complaining about a 900k signings. It can be bury any time.

Because as they’ve showed, they aren’t signing guys like Marleau, Thornton, Simmonds etc just to bench them.

All the “what’s not to like, the contract can be buried” talk I don’t really get. They won’t even heathy scratch him, they aren’t going to send him to the Marlies.

Exactly - they want to make everyone happy and benching Simmonds - not happening

I agree with you but that’s Leaf Nation. I do see a shift from this playoffs though.

Is there alternatives? Prior to the TDL, Vesey and Boyd were the alternatives and they both either sucked or meh.
Brooks is not that good. He is smart to always be in the right place but he needs to get better at the dot and stronger.
Anderson was okay but nothing to sing praise about and he played like 2 games or so.
Robertson needs to get stronger, a lot stronger if he wants to be Debrincat 2.0 or he is just a younger Petan.
Hallander had not play a game in the NHL.
It is not like we have the next wave of Brown, Leivo, Kap and AJ in our system.
I would say though if Moore and Tima are still with us and Simmonds is playing ahead of them, that’s a problem. But the Leafs just don’t have alternatives.

Thanks Trapper! Welcome back yourself
Yes the 2 year deal does spell some sort of commitment, but want Marincin on a 2 year contract? And he did not see much ice over those years
Also Simmonds was getting into a groove before his injury, so hoteliers he comes back at that level. If so his contract is a bargain, if not press box or Marlies or trade in hoping

Yes, don’t sign these guys in the first place, especially if there is an obligation where they think they HAVE to play him because he’s a popular vet. I was in favour of giving him a shot last year but he really shouldn’t have been brought back.

you need toughness in the line up. There isn’t a whole lot of that in UFA. People who are on here saying Sabourin is a better player than Wayne Simmonds need to get their eyes checked. Sabourin is a horrible hockey player and literally good for nothing.

I can admit I love Simmonds, but he didn’t play well down the stretch. But he does bring something besides toughness to this team. That is a net front presence on the Power Play and even 5 on 5. Simmonds is statistically one of the best PP scorers in the league. prior to the PP going cold and his injury he was a huge factor in terms of screening and creating traffic. That is something NO ONE else on the team does. So whether you like him or not, he brings an element that is needed to the team at the end of the day.

Mitch Marner had a bad playoffs. Simmonds is not in a position to push anyone in this team
Mitch still a star in this league, Simmonds is essentially nobody

Simmonds himself was never known for his work ethic.

Mitch was very clear about who pushed him made him better, it was Matt Martin who was like an older brother to him
Martin knew his role really well. Unfortunately, he was never given an opportunity to play in playoffs

The one playoff he did play, he had 2 points in 6 games, including that one play with Kapanen scoring the winner

Funny, we want Simmonds to play like Martin, yet we had Martin
Martin at 2.5 seems like a better deal than Trevor Moore, Gauthier, Simmonds and Mikaheyev combined

i stand by my last post, you always talk shit out of your ass and I’m convinced you literally know nothing about the NHL.

do you research before you talk about players. All people talk about when it comes to Simmonds is how hard he works and his work ethic/unconventional path to the OHL and becoming a second round pick in the NHL, how much of a locker room guy he is and how bad he wants to win.

It has also been public knowledge that for the last 3 seasons or so he’s had to deal with nagging injuries in the off-season that have limited his ability to get a full off-season of training
